I am almost 60 years old and have been interested in food for the last 50 years. I used to watch my mother baking her wonderful cakes and magnificant Yorkshire Puddings. I think this was a great influence on my cooking and baking.
I have to adjust virtually all my baking recipes as we live 6000 ft above sea level. This was quite a move from below sea level in England.
I must be the luckiest person alive as it doesn't matter what I cook or bake, my husband loves it.
We live with my daughter and her three teenage children in South Africa. My son is a Forensic Mental Nurse in Australia.
My favorite things to cook
I like making pastry and muffins. I also like finding and creating original salads. I also like making lasagne and desserts. My latest addition is baking bread in my bread machine and finding recipes for this.
My favorite family cooking traditions
These include roasting meats. I steam all my vegetables, but not potatoes. In summer we regularly have our braais (BBQs) when I try new salad recipes and make garlic bread.
My cooking triumphs
I am an expert pastry cook from flaky, through shortcrust and onto hotwater. My grandchildren all love my muffins, particularly the chocolate and banana and my lemon and poppy seed. Nobody can match my roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. My grandson is a weekly border at his school and my daughter tells me my lasagne is the talk of the hostel.
My cooking tragedies
I bake the most dreadful cakes - they just don't rise so I've given up trying. Even my Christmas cakes are a flop so I buy them.
