Nana's Barbeque Sauce

Reviewed: Apr. 22, 2008
The first time I tried this, I used it in a crockpot pork rib recipe (Honey Ribs here on this site), so I diluted it a bit (didn't need too....it turned out too runny that way), but I was pleasantly surprised at how flavorful the ribs still turned out! The 3rd time, I poured it directly over pork ribs abd baked them for about 1 1/2 hours, and ohhhh my goodness! Soooooo delicious!! These were the BEST ribs I have made in a long time, if ever! The flavor was AMAZING!! Very, very good! And I love that it was so easy to throw together. I am done buying BBQ sauce anymore, I'll just make it, because its so much better!

Penne Pasta with Spinach and Bacon

Reviewed: Apr. 12, 2008
Yum, yum, yum!! This was a huge hit! It looked delicious and I needed to use up some bacon, so I gave it a try. Funny thing is, hubby was tired of me trying new recipes (I think I'm becoming an allrecipes addict!), so I had to talk him into it, but he was raving about it in the end. I LOVE that its so easy and only really required 5 ingredients - perfect "busy night" meal, and my family loved it! Everyone went back for at least seconds. Add a little "snow cheese" (my kids' term for parmesan cheese) to the top and its amazing! This one very may become a staple recipe in our house.

Sweet Restaurant Slaw

Reviewed: Apr. 10, 2008
I initially rated this a 5, after eating a bowl after only 30 mins. But I have to say, I liked it less once it had refridgerated for 1 1/2 hours. It got really soggy and soupy and became way too sweet and syrupy. My hubby hated it and told me not to make it again, and my kids weren't all that thrilled with it either (and my daughter LOVES coleslaw). I have no idea what went wrong, since all the other reviews are so positive, but I am not eager to make it again unless I plan to eat it immediately. I was bummed it didn't turn out better.

Roast Potatoes

Reviewed: Mar. 23, 2008
These are really good! I usually sub Herbs de Provence for the rosemary, but otherwise stick to the recipe, and they turn out flavorful. They do stick to the foil though. After making these 4 or 5 times, I went in search of a different recipe because I wanted something that didn't dry out as badly or stick to the foil. They are good, but tasted basically the same as my home fries I make on the stove-top, and not so much like the roasted potatoes I get in restaurants and love. I have now taken some techniques from another recipe and use them with this one. Here's what I suggest: Use baby potatoes and cut each in half. Simmer halved potatoes for 6-7 mins to soften and infuse with moisture so they don't dry up during baking. Line the baking sheet with foil and drizzle olive oil over the foil to lightly coat, then place each potato half on the foil cut-side down. Brush potatoes with excess olive oil from the pan, then season and bake. Now my potatoes turn out PERFECT every time -- nicely carmelized, crispy skin, soft on the inside, not at all dry, and they don't stick to the foil!

Mini Sour Cream Biscuits

Reviewed: Mar. 23, 2008
WOW! These are great! So easy and really delicious! My family loved them! Instead of 12 mini biscuits, I made 6 regular-sized ones (didn't have a mini pan), and they still turned out perfect. Also, I lined the muffin tin with cupcake wrappers to save on clean-up and that worked great. Very yummy and easy - I will definitely be making these again!!

Irish Soda Farls

Reviewed: Mar. 17, 2008
I made these as part of an Ulster feast for my family, and I thought these were awesome! They taste like a biscuit, only better. And my kids and hubby really liked them too. Hubby went Danish-style (think Aebleskiver) with his and ate it with jam (raspberry) and powdered sugar. Not exactly Irish, but an extremely delicious way to eat them! I thought these were great and sooooo easy - I will definitely be making them again!

Ferg's Ulster Fry-up

Reviewed: Mar. 17, 2008
I made this for a special St. Patrick's Day breakfast for my family. I love how fast and easy it was to make -- I made it all (minus boiling and mashing the potatoes the night before for the Farl) in 30 mins! I did leave out the black pudding because after reading the ingredients it just didn't sound like something my family or I would like. I had no idea how much this was going to yield! I made everything to the specifications, and it was SO MUCH food! I have a family of 4, and easily could have cut the recipe in half and still had plenty. Like others have said, its not something you would want to have everyday - loaded with fat, carbs, and calories - but for a once-in-a-while treat, yum!

Pauline Werner's Beef Stew

Reviewed: Nov. 18, 2007
This is a great stew recipe as is, but I made some modifications, and its now a staple at our house. I don't dredge the beef in flour before browning, and I omitted the bay leaf and barley (my hubby isn't a fan of either in his stew). My hubby snuck in the kitchen and spiked it with half a packet of beef stew seasoning once -- I was horrified at first! -- but it gave it some oomph. Also, I added some (about a Tbs, maybe?) worchestershire sauce and a dash of crushed red pepper for some zing. At the very end of cooking (the last 3-5 minutes), I stir in about a cup of frozen peas. In my opinion, it makes the stew. But even without all the modifying, I have to say, its a great recipe as-is!

Easy Breaded Shrimp

Reviewed: Oct. 19, 2007
For being so simple and requiring so few ingredients, i thought this was going to be a bland recipe, but it was really good! The whole family loved it, including my 6 and 3 year olds. I love that its so quick and easy -- huge bonus for a frazzled mom! Next time, I may add a bit of garlic powder and a dash of cayenne for some extra "pop," but its really flavorful the way it is. Its a keeper!

Grilled Salmon with Avocado Dip

Reviewed: Sep. 18, 2007
This was really good! I wasn't sure how the dip was going to taste on the fish -- it was basically just guacamole -- but it was great! My hubby doesn't care much for dill or lemon, but he liked the seasonings on this dish. I think this puts it best: My 3 year old had 3rds, my 5 year old had 2nds, and hubby couldn't stop raving. Its a keeper!

Turkey Bean Chili

Reviewed: Aug. 21, 2007
I am always a little nervous to try something that is not yet rated, but this was exactly the recipe I was looking for, so I tried it. I did modify it very slightly -- I used tomato juice with fresh tomatoes, and used 2 cans chili beans and 1 can butter beans in place of kidney and pinto beans -- but it was still pretty darn good. My family loved it and I was glad it was easy. Thanks for this recipe!

Shrimp Melt

Reviewed: Jun. 4, 2007
Totally unimpressed! The Old Bay is way too strong. It overpowers the shrimp so I couldn't even taste it. My kids wouldn't eat it, nor would my husband, after about the 2nd or 3rd bite. Unfortunate, because this recipe looked like it would be great.

Shrimp Stir-Fry

Reviewed: Apr. 24, 2007
This was a great way to try something new as far as stir-fry goes, but it wasn't the most "WOW" dish I have ever had, and my hubby thought it was a little bland. But overall, it was good and very easy. With a little more ginger and a few more cloves garlic, it should taste a lot better. I may try making it again with some alterations.

Shrimp Etoufee III

Reviewed: Apr. 5, 2007
The only reason I'm not rating it a 5 is because my first attempt was a disaster! It says after you add in the celery and peppers to turn the heat up to high and stir occasionally. I ended up burning them so badly that they were black and stuck to my pan, my smoke alarm went off, and even with all the windows open, it still took a few hours to "dehaze" my house. The next time, I only turned it to the low side of med-high, and it still almost burned, and I had to stir it a LOT! But, in the end, it tasted AMAZING and we all loved it!! It was really easy, and the outcome was delicious! Its worth the effort, I would just recommend not turning the heat up past med-high.

Quick Chicken with Asparagus and Provolone

Reviewed: Feb. 3, 2007
This probably would have gotten a 5 had I not goofed on the recipe! I decided not to bread it to cut down on carbs and deep frying, so instead I just browned it on both sides with some olive oil. And then I goofed and forgot to add in the broth which I think affected the way the cheese melted. I also used frozen aparagus as opposed to canned. The flavor was awesome, but the cheese didn't stick to the chicken quite right, so I had to kind of pick up the melted cheese with a spoon and drizzle it back over the chicken. We all enjoyed it though, and I will be making it again.

Restaurant-Style Buffalo Chicken Wings

Reviewed: Jan. 29, 2007
We had these tonight for dinner and they were very good! I toned down the spiciness a bit (only used a dash of cayenne, as opposed to the 1/4 tsp) because I have young kids, but they still had a little zip to them. My picky 5 year old LOVED them! I found that the sauce didn't stick to the wings very well and was pretty runny, but I am pretty sure that was human error on my part and nothing having to do with the recipe. These weren't quite what I expected, but overall were really good. I will be making them again!

Jamie's Minestrone

Reviewed: Dec. 12, 2006
This minestrone is awesome!! I didn;t use any spinach because I didn;t have it on hand, but pretty much used everything else and it turned out awesome! I used multi-colored shell pasta, which added some extra color to the soup. Very good and I will be making it again, for sure!

Baked Slow Cooker Chicken

Reviewed: Dec. 6, 2006
This is excellent and so incredibly easy!! I have made it many times now, always to rave reviews! One time, it did turn out a bit too oily, but I think I brushed it with too much olive oil and/or cooked it too long. This is now my "busy day" staple. 5 mins to prep, throw it in the crock pot, and off I go! Oh, and it makes an awesome, flavorful chicken salad for the next day's lunch.

Brie Cranberry and Chicken Pizza

Reviewed: Dec. 6, 2006
This pizza was okay, but not as WOW as I had expected. My husband didn't really like it -- he said it was too wierd of a combo of flavors. I liked it, but thought it was missing something, it was pretty bland. The brie was good on it, I like that concept. But if I were to make it again, I would probably add some roasted garlic to give it a little more pizzaz. It was okay, but not that impressive, in my opinion.

Sweet Honey French Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2006
I really liked the flavor of this loaf, but the loaf was really small. I used it for croutons, but the loaf would have been too small as a side for my family of 4. Overall the flavor was good, though, especially considering I was out of honey so I didn't really sweeten it at all. I would love to try it again doubling the recipe, but for my first attempt, I was disappointed that it didn't yield more. The second and 3rd times I made this, I was out of honey, so I substituted with molasses. Honestly, I prefer it this way! It makes the loaf taste more "rustic" sweet and less "sticky" sweet. Also, doubling the recipe worked a lot better -- we had enough for my family of 4. Its a really good, easy base recipe, but I have had to play with it to get it the way I like it.
