About this Cook
I was born and raised in NW Illinois and began watching and cooking with my mother and grandmothers at a young age. I worked in the resturant business for 6 years before going to school and becoming a nurse. I am currently a charge nurse at a long term care facility. I'm also a newlywed (6/5/2010) to a wonderful man who has 3 kids and I enjoy teaching them to cook and most of the time appreciate the extra set of hands in the kitchen!
My favorite things to cook
I love baking desserts and pies. The summer you will find me using my grill alot! I love cooking also for crowds and gatherings.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Growing up I loved watching my mother and grandmother cook. Holidays are always special as everything is made from scratch!
My cooking triumphs
When I was in my early teens, I entered pie baking contests for my hometowns Winterfest. I won first and second several years for my homemeade black raspberry pies!
My cooking tragedies
I was dating a guy that never had a girlfriend that was able to cook before. I usually would say that my specialty would be desserts, but I could NEVER could get any of them to turn out when I made dinner for him or his family, except my German Chocolate cake (although I could not get it to rise as much as grandmas!). I made chocolate, peanut butter, coconut and butterscotch cream pies and they would never set up. I always felt like I was serving slop, but they insisted, despite the looks they were the best pies they had ever had! I also love chocolate zuchinni cake that my mom makes and friendship bread...it would never set up or it would burn. Living in an apartment, you never know what to expect. Come to find out a month after moving in, and having nothing seem to turn out, I bought and oven thermometer. My oven thermostat was not working and at times my oven set at 350 would actually be aruond 600 degrees! No wonder nothing turned out!

Sweet Dinner Rolls
New favorite! If I am in a hurry, I pinch off a walnut sized ball of dough and shape into a ball, rise and bake, brush butter on when I take out of the oven. Also, I do the balls and freeze them before rising on cookie sheet. Once frozen put in a freezer bag with oven temp and time. Depending on the heat in my kitchen, frozen dough takes 2 to 4 hours to rise before baking. We also LOVE cinnamon rolls from this recipe. Make ahead, freeze and allow to rise before baking!

Soft Sugar Cookies V
Simply amazing! I made 6 batches this past Christmas and everyone loved them! Getting ready to make them for Valentine's day now. They freeze great without frosting, so I make them ahead and frost them when I pull them out of the freezer. When short on time, I use a cookie scoop, roll them into balls and mash them down to my desired thickness with a glass dipped in flour and bake as directed. Less mess and much faster than rolling out and using cookie cutters!

Gramma's Apple Bread Pudding
WOW! I put this in the crockpot for 3 hours on low...watch though, I took a spatula and scraped the sides so it wouldn't burn. I also put my raisins in some water and put it in the microwave for to get hot so they would plump up. I wasn't up for the vanilla sauce, so I made a Caramel Sauce using a can of sweetened condensed milk simmered in water for 3 hours. Found that recipe on here...the neighbors are still talking about it!
