Let's Party!

It seems like ever since school started this year we have been running non-stop. With both of my boys in football this year, and my daughter going overboard with the clubs and extracurricular activities there doesn’t seem to be much time left for just relaxing and enjoying each other. Between early morning practice, evening practice, games twice a week, (I hate football) love my boys though, so there you go. Choir practice, student council meetings, safety patrol…I could go on but it makes me tired thinking of everything at once.  Add in all the everyday stuff we have to do and you start missing just being together.
So a party seemed like an excellent idea. I thought it would give us a chance to relax and enjoy each other. My plan was to do a Fall party on a Saturday so that we didn’t have to rush and I could take my time with the prep work. But when I mentioned the party to the family they all decided it should be my birthday party. Can’t say that I wanted to throw my own party but when you have 3 children getting all excited about it what can you do? Since I was throwing the party on my birthday I appointed hubby as Kitchen-slave for the day. Muahahaha! That was fun! I used Karo recipes for most of the party food. Yum!

I started the day making Spooky Homemade Marshmallows. I was so happy to pass the marshmallow bowl to my hubs and have him wash it! Hahahaha! When my daughter got home I told her she was going to help me with the marshmallows. When I pulled out the sheet of marshmallow her eyes got big and she asked my “You made marshmallows? With scratch?” I couldn’t help laughing over that one. It reminded me of the joke about a woman going to the grocery store looking for scratch. I can’t remember the whole thing but it’s funny. Anyway back to the marshmallows, my kids thought I was just amazing to be able to make marshmallows. I didn’t tell them how easy it was.
I also made Caramel Corn Treat Bags. It was even better to hand over the caramel pot over to hubby to wash! Not that he complained since he ate the leftover caramel out of the pot first. I skipped the bag part and just put it in a basket so that we could munch on it. I’m not really a fan of popcorn but I loved this so much it was really hard for me to walk away from it.
I also made Bacon and Caramelized Onion Rolls. Oh my Gosh! These are fabulous. The kids didn’t really like them but me and hubby loved them. I think they are holiday yummy. Mmmm. I keep thinking about these rolls, but they are all gone and it makes me a little sad.

When the boys got home we made Creepy Mini Pizzas. More cute than creepy :) The kids are always happy putting their own toppings on pizzas. My oldest made this one.

We had cake that Dad had made, and my daughter was impressed that he had made it “with scratch”. Hehe.

Then the best part, the kids gave me presents! My oldest son did as many push-ups as my new age (I’m not telling) to show me how strong his love for me was. Yeah he just melted my heart with that one :) It was a lot of push-ups, he was shaking by the time he was done. My youngest son did a dance for me that had me laughing so hard. He always can make me laugh, even when I don’t want to. And then my little daughter sang me a special Birthday song, danced and did cartwheels for me. Sweet baby girl can always make me smile. I adore my kids. They then tried to get Dad to sing and dance for me but he wasn’t having it.
We had a great time. It was great to be able to relax and be silly with each other. You don’t need a lot of people to have a party, just people you love and love to have fun with.

Hi Rae, sounds like you have a really nice family. Happy late Birthday! I like the idea of having food and cake for a birthday. Plus, you got entertainment too. Now, all you have to do is get ready for Halloween tommorrow. : )

What fun! If kids only knew how little it takes to make Mom smile! That caramel corn is da bomb! Thanks for posting, Rae.

It is amazing how easy marshmallows are to make! Now to try some of that carmel corn, I've been hungry for some.

About Me
I am a stay at home mom with three beautiful kids. I love cooking and I am always looking for something new to cook for my family. My husband was thrilled when I found this website cause I have a tendancy to buy any cookbook I see!
My favorite things to cook
I love baking. Fall and winter are my favorite seasons because I can always have something in the oven. I also love crockpot dinners as well.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Holiday cooking is the best. I love cooking the dessert my grandmother taught me how to make when I turned 14. Every year at Christmas and Thanksgiving I can hear her telling me what to do and how to do it, I can also feel her smack when I stirred the wrong way! Hehe.
My cooking triumphs
I have always been afraid of frying foods after a couple disastrous attempts at it when I was younger, my fingers always seemed to go into the oil, I have finally started trying frying foods. I am just a lot more cautious. Now I am trying to figure out muffins and pies, and different types of deserts. I think I have finally figured out cheesecake (yay!me).
My cooking tragedies
One Thanksgiving I was making Ham in the Slow Cooker. About an hour before we were supposed to eat my son asks "Mom did you want the Crockpot plugged in?" Whoops! We had a bunch of yummy sides though :) Now every time I make something in the slow cooker my family asks if I plugged it in :)
