Okay, I'm ready to 'fess up about my little game…my blog post names are song titles. The 80's lyric quiz blog inspired me. (I tanked the quiz, by the way. I didn't follow instructions. But I did get the Schoolhouse Rock bonus points.) I'm not sure how long I could've kept it up, anyway—I want to make Hot Cross Buns for Easter, and I can't think of a song title (of a band I'd actually listen to) that might apply.

What music do you listen to while cooking? Talking Heads always puts me in a good mood. I also listen to a local radio station that plays big band music on Saturday nights. Those are good evenings for baking projects.

  1. All Apologies – Nirvana
  2. Don't Lose Your Temper – XTC
  3. She Cracked – The Modern Lovers
  4. Valentine – The Replacements
  5. Upside Down – The Jesus and Mary Chain
  6. Feel the Pain – Dinosaur Jr.

I love Talking Heads! Sometimes my cooking reminds me of "Burning Down the House." But I'm sure you never have to be "All Apologies" for your baking.

How about "Stir it up" by Bob Marley & The Wailers?

Ah! That would've worked. Sadly, after too many years of working in restaurants, Bob Marley is on the top of my "overplayed" list. I can't listen to Legend without feeling like I'm back at work. :(

"Scratch" by Morphine. Maybe something from Cake?

Nice! (Those would work much better than the Mission of Burma song I was trying to fit in....) One woman I used to work with always sang Def Leopard's "Pour Some Sugar On Me," claiming it was the best bakers' song. Or, as my 8th-grade yearbook printed [voted most popular band!], "Deaf Leopard." Literalists.

"Bad Apples" - Guns N' Roses "Girl Keeps Coming Apart" - Aerosmith "In My Darkest Hour" - Megadeath ...then again I'm not a very good baker.

About Me
I am thrilled to be able to combine my love of the written word with my passion for food in my job at Allrecipes.com. I have a background in publishing and in the food service industry, both "front of the house" and back. I graduated from the Culinary Institute of America's Baking & Pastry program and have worked as a baker and pastry cook in Wisconsin, for a season at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, and at bakeries in Seattle.
My favorite things to cook
My baking career really began when I was in first grade and my family was living in Germany. Every morning my father and I would walk to the local bakery for bread and an afternoon treat, like Apfelkuchen. I love dark sour breads, baking anything with yeast in it, and anything that requires hours of patient work, like croissant and Danish doughs.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Food we ate while camping. Animal pancakes. My mom's meatloaf. My grandfather's breakfasts.
My cooking triumphs
I think a baker's real triumph is getting to work at 4 am, day in and day out, so that there are beautiful pastries and loaves of bread on display when the bakery opens three hours later. A personal triumph was making my own wedding cake.
My cooking tragedies
Heavens! Too shameful to list: all that wasted dough, those burnt nuts, spilled milk to cry over....
