Southern Fried Cabbage

Reviewed: Feb. 14, 2014
The secret to good cooked cabbage is bacon grease and a little sugar. Butter can be used in place of the oil. We love cooked cabbage, but seldom use onions with our cabbage; although, we love onions. Play around with this recipe and adjust the seasonings to your liking.

Martha's Vegetable Beef Soup

Reviewed: Sep. 24, 2013
I've made this soup several times and I, too, have altered it for my family's taste and texture. I now use one medium onion with only 1 TBS. of onion soup mix because of the sodium content. I changed the water to low sodium beef broth and use petite diced tomatoes. I want to thank dkennedy for posting this recipe. It gave me a good basis for a lovely easy soup.

White Sauce

Reviewed: Sep. 18, 2012
I remember white sauce being used with many vegetables such as corn, peas, mixed vegetables, lima beans, etc. Also, Moms would mix up a batch of white sauce and add canned vegetables for a quick vegetable soup. Chipped beef or fried hamburger was added to white sauce for gravy. Add a little salt and pepper to the white sauce and this recipe is perfect. Thanks for sharing a forgotten favorite.

Debdoozie's Blue Ribbon Chili

Reviewed: Sep. 10, 2012
Four star for the ease of making, but the chili was a little too thick and strong flavored for our liking. Next time I'll use 3 TBS. of chili seasoning instead of 4 or a mild chili seasoning with only 1lb. of beef and add 1 TBS. sugar to the chili. Using the salsa is a great idea. Thanks for posting.

Banana Chocolate Chip Dessert

Reviewed: Aug. 18, 2012
I like these bars because they are cake-like and don't have an overpowering banana taste. I put the batter in a 9 X 13 pan, bake for about 35-40 min. and often freeze the baked bars to use later. I wouldn't change a thing about this recipe. Easy and tasty. If you have trouble cutting the bar, put them in the freezer for a few minutes before cutting. Thanks for sharing.

Cherry Delight Dessert

Reviewed: Jul. 22, 2012
In our area this recipe is from the late 1960s and early 1970s. There are a few slightly different versions of this wonderful treat, but all end up tasting the same. My children have traveled the world and still think this is one of the best desserts they have eaten. We try to have it at least once a year; usually at Christmas. Thanks for sharing with others.

Chocolate Chip Banana Muffins

Reviewed: Jun. 18, 2012
I used vanilla Greek yogurt as that was all I had on hand. The muffins tuned out great. I'm going to freeze them and take to neighbors. Thanks for sharing!

Mother's Day Pie

Reviewed: Jun. 12, 2012
So Good!! This was so easy and it turned out perfectly. We all loved it. It did take longer to bake in my oven. I think the recipe needs a new title as it's not just a Mother's Day Pie. The word coconut needs to be in the title when people search for coconut recipes. Thanks for posting this little gem!!

Macaroni and Cheese for Two

Reviewed: Apr. 16, 2012
Very good! I add extra cheese on top and sometimes use only 3/4 of the egg if its large. I often use this recipe for the two of us. Thanks so much for posting.

Easy Cheese Ball II

Reviewed: Dec. 28, 2011
Everyone loved this cheese ball which is not always the case when serving cheese balls. I made sure I used Hidden Ranch original dressing mix. This is so easy and so good!! It's a keeper.

Beth's Spicy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

Reviewed: Oct. 15, 2011
This recipe had mixed reviews. Some thought the cookies were a bit too spicy. I guess those people have the so called super taste buds. Anyway, I probably won't make it again or at least, leave out the cloves.

Sloppy Joe Sandwiches

Reviewed: Oct. 8, 2011
This is not the best Sloppy Joe recipe I've used, but it's good for a quick meal and especially good for those who don't like chopped onions, chopped green peppers, etc. in their sloppy joes. Sometimes I use a little BBQ sauce for a different flavor. Thanks for sharing. I'll use this often.

Garden Pasta Salad

Reviewed: Jul. 11, 2011
I love this. I usually make half at a time for myself using macaroni pasta. I don't always have carrots on hand and I usually substitute red bell pepper (high in Vit. C) and use much less dressing. My point is-this recipe is such a forgiving recipe. It always turns out great. Thanks for taking the time to share.

Southern Fried Chicken

Reviewed: May 19, 2011
This is the basic way to cook southern fried chicken. Self-rising flour can also be used and you don't need the paprika to have good fried chicken. Back in the day, Crisco shortening was used for delicious fried chicken.

I love this version of the dressing. It's a little sweeter than the original and is delicious with pork barbecue sandwiches. Thanks for sharing.

Mom's Coleslaw

Reviewed: Apr. 23, 2011
A good basic recipe. I use this for sloppy joes and barbecue sandwiches. However, being from the south, I often make it a bit sweeter with 1/3 cup sugar. Thanks.

Best Big, Fat, Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie

Reviewed: Feb. 6, 2011
It's not as tasty as the original Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie--perhaps it's the unsalted butter that makes the difference. They are easy to make and have a good texture, but I probably won't make again. If I do, I'll use salted butter and cut back on the salt in the recipe.

Mini Meatloaves

Reviewed: Jan. 19, 2011
For us, we needed 1/2 cup chopped onion which improved the flavor. These are good with no topping, but with gravy drizzled over the top. The cheese gives a firmer texture. I form these into small patties or loaves and bake in a greased foil lined 9x 13 pan for easy clean up. Thanks for sharing.

Slow Cooker Beef Stew I

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2010
This is a wonderful old fashioned tasting, non-tomato based stew which is even better the next day. It is good as written, but can be tweaked to suit various tastes. Some cooks like adding a tsp. of sugar and a pinch of allspice to stews with additional broth. Thanks for sharing.

Pennsylvania Coal Region Barbecue

Reviewed: Nov. 30, 2010
For my family this is just fine as written. There is no need to change a thing. This is much like a Sloppy Joe, but not as sloppy. Thanks for sharing. I'll use this often.
