I'm a single mama of two terrific girls, ages 10 and 14. I love cooking for them, as well as for family, friends and neighbors. I'm one of those people who unwinds in the evening by cooking...seems like the more hectic my day, the more I can't wait to get in the kitchen. (If that sounds snooty, rest assured that I have many flaws, too. :)
My favorite things to cook
I love cooking all sorts of things. Really, I'd have to break my favorite ways to cook down into two categories: First is a carefully planned out menu, each ingredient shopped for and chosen exclusively for that particular meal, prepared with lots of time involved and hopefully some nice music in the background and a glass of wine, all for the pleasure of cooking for loved ones. The second way that I love to cook is by going to the refrigerator, seeing how slim the pickings are, doing an Allrecipes search to figure out what on earth I can cook based on what I've got, and throwing together a surprisingly fabulous meal in no time flat.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Being a good Lancaster County girl, my family cooking traditions are rooted in my Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. Family favorites are things like ham loaf, chicken pot pie, baked corn, brown buttered noodles, and shoo fly pie.
My cooking triumphs
I feel pretty good about my ability to work with yeast at this point in my baking career.
My cooking tragedies
I still haven't mastered pie dough, unfortunately. My kids would say that my Slow Cooker Irish Oatmeal is my biggest cooking tragedy. :)
