Victory gardeners WWII 1943
About this Cook
The photo is that of my Grandparents, taken during WWII as they were working in their Victory Garden. We lived with them while my Dad was away at war. Grandma made the best meals ever with produce from their garden & chickens & rabbits they kept.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Gaufrettes!!! Belgian cookies. My Grandmother would make a huge batch & when my husband was in Vietnam, she sent him boxes of them. His sailors would come & find him when the box came because he would share with the young men. They even came to the flight deck to let him know he had a box from his Grandmother so they could have Grammy's gaufrettes.

Rouxless Gumbo
Hunter, thank you so much for this easy delicious recipe. My husband made this gumbo and it was superb! He is a decent ‘follow the directions’ sort of cook and he did with this recipe, even making a quick trip to the grocery store to pick up a couple of things. He followed the recipe and the outcome is well worth bragging about. It made a big potful and unless our grandson (the bottomless stomach)shows up in the next day or so, I am going to freeze some of it for another delicious meal. I could rave on a bit more, but I hope it is enough to say thank you again and please submit some more lovely meals like this one for us to enjoy.

Pita Pizza
Great idea. I used some flour totillas that were on their last legs (still safe just carboardy), jarred pasta saauce and whatever was in the frig. Made his and hers. Perfect way to use up those small quantity leftovers and have an enjoyable meal. The grandsons called them "garbage pizzas" and inhaled them. Guess the eating was a positive vote from them, in spite of the dubious name they gave it. I will look for pitas next time.

Ham Tetrazzini
I used some left over Thanksgiving ham from the freezer. Like so many others, I made a few revisions – more onion, a couple of garlic cloves and some fresh mushroom slices, olive oil with the butter and simmered for about 45 minutes to an hour on the lowest heat after sautéing the garlic and onions and adding the soup, chicken broth instead of water and the cheese. We had it over angel hair pasta and it was sooo yummy. Thank you for a delicious recipe that is so adaptable to what each cook as available in their pantry and refrigerator.
