Glorious Sponge Cake

Reviewed: Sep. 12, 2007
I haven't ever given a recipe on this site one star before. I have a weekend business of making cakes for parties, ergo, I know how to bake properly. My friend has a birthday tomorrow and he requested a lemon sponge cake. I have not made one before given that I do not like sponge cakes. I found this recipe and tried it given that it was ranked highly by its users. I followed the instructions exactly including this statement: "Pour batter into an ungreased 9 inch tube pan. Bake at 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) for one hour, or until done." My cake is completely stuck in the tube pan. I assumed that since the author took the time to point out that the tube pan is to be ungreased (which is usually not the case with cakes baked in tube pans), they meant that the tube pan should definitely be ungreased. It is 9:30 PM right now and I have to start over using another recipe for my friend's birthday given that the cake is permanently attached to my tube pan. To say the least, this is frustrating.

Fruit Salsa with Cinnamon Tortilla Chips

Reviewed: Jun. 18, 2007
This recipe is amazing. I followed the author's option of baking the chips and they turned out beautifully. I also left out the kiwi and nutmeg since I don't like them and added a peach and a nectarine. I took this dish on a rafting trip and we inhaled every morsel. Also, I just got one of those "ultimate chopper" things and it definitely helps with the prep work. I had this recipe done in about 5 minutes using my new gadget.

Best Carrot Cake Ever

Reviewed: Apr. 9, 2007
I gave this recipe 5 stars but it deserves 10. I originally needed to bring a carrot cake to work for a friend's birthday. I tried this recipe and my co-workers literally licked the platter clean. Since then, I had a several month-long bake sale to raise money for a charity that my friend's and I are involved with. I made this recipe into muffins and raised about 800 dollars off of this muffin recipe and a few others. This is probably the best recipe that I have ever gotten from this site.

Cool Whipped Frosting

Reviewed: Apr. 9, 2007
I made a strawberry shortcake using this recipe as the whipped cream layer and brought it into work. My co-workers absolutely loved it. I can see this recipe as having a lot of uses (a topping for cakes, cupcakes, a topping for a nice fruit salad, etc..) It is very, very yummy.

Wedding Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 9, 2007
I was initially optimistic when I read the ingredient list for this recipe, however, it was a bit of a disappointment. To its credit, it was a very moist dense cake. The things that I didn't like were that it had very little flavor if any, it was more of a pound cake than a cake, and I think the leavening is a little off of the ideal. At any rate, I think that this recipe could be really good with some slight alteration but as written, it isn't there yet.

Grandma Johnson's Scones

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2007
These were absolutely what I wanted. I ate at an Irish restaurant last weekend and I loved the scones that I had. I wanted to re-create my meal there but I had never made a batch of scones before. I saw this recipe on allrecipes.com and noted the glowing reviews. I made the recipe tonight and the scones turned out beautifully! I wouldn't change one thing about them. Thank you Grandma Johnson, wherever you are! (FYI: I posted a picture of them. It is the picture with a scone on a green plate. )

Ooey-Gooey Cinnamon Buns

Reviewed: Dec. 15, 2006
I made this recipe exactly today and I loved it! The only change I made was to make 1 1/2 times the amount of syrup for the bottom of the pan. Otherwise I followed it to the letter. The dough is easy to work with and the end flavor of the rolls is just right. This recipe is definitely a keeper.
