Basboosa

Reviewed: Oct. 10, 2007
This recipe did not come out right at all. I followed everything EXCEPT, I set it aside for an hour instead of 30 minutes. I don't think that alone would have caused such a terrible outcome. First of all 20 minutes + 3 minutes of broiling was far from enough time to cook this basboosa thoroughly. The top was browned very nicely so I added the syrup. When I cut out a square, I realized the inside was raw and uncooked as ever. So I returned it to the oven for 22 more minutes (total 45 minutes)....still brown on the outside but raw on the inside.

I followed the recipe exactly and it came out sooo delicious. Made it for Thanksgiving and will be making it again tomorrow. My husband loved it.

World's Best Lasagna

Reviewed: Oct. 10, 2007
Really liked this lasagna. The only change I would make next time is LESS MEAT. It was just a bit too meaty of a meat sauce for my taste.

Candied Sweet Potatoes

Reviewed: Oct. 10, 2007
So easy and so delicious. I baked some of the potatoes (then removed the skin) and boiled some. I think next time I'll boil all. Boiling was easier (I left the skin on)and they tasted just as good.

Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies II

Reviewed: Oct. 10, 2007
First time I made these I followed the recipe exactly as instructed and they came out so delicious. Usually I like to make cookies fresh..just a few at a time, so I roll them into logs, wrap up in wax paper and freezer bag then freeze. By the way, I think the trick to getting the cookies nice and chewy is to bake until very very lightly browned. Second time I made these I added peanut butter chips...EVEN BETTER because I'm a big chocolate/peanut butter fan.

Homestyle Turkey, the Michigander Way

Reviewed: Oct. 10, 2007
This was the first time I made turkey in ten years and it came out perfect. I stuffed it with cooked stuffing mix, cooked rice, raw onions, garlic and sun dried tomatoes. The I will stick to this recipe from now on.

Curried Coconut Chicken

Reviewed: Oct. 16, 2007
Loved this recipe. It didn't taste like 100% authentic Indian or Thai but It was real close.... I'm very picky because I've had quite a bit of home cooked Indian food. The only changes I made were: added 3 small cubed red potatoes and a 1/8 cup of shredded coconut. Next time I might add more coconut. Will definitely make this again.

Bake Sale Lemon Bars

Reviewed: Dec. 11, 2007
Loved this recipe. I followed the advice of others and increased the crust ingredients. I didn't double them....instead I 1.5X them. If I doubled I think the crust would have been too thick. I followed beebeebaker's advice in regards to the lemon topping. Next time I will add use more sugar on the lemon top (about 2 1/4 cups granulated sugar). It was not sweet enough for my taste, but otherwise it would have been perfect.

Barley Bake

Reviewed: Dec. 14, 2008
I've made this recipe several time. My changes are: I use olive oil instead of butter and I use sliced almonds instead of pine nuts (simply because I didn't have pine nuts available). It's light and tasty.

I made this with onion soup mix, fresh garlic and of course spices (salt, pepper, onion powder). We loved it...will definitely make again.

Anginetti

Reviewed: Dec. 19, 2008
Love this recipe. I did add lemon zest to the icing to make it a bit more lemony. My one mistake was I made the cookies a bit on the small side. Next time I'll make them bigger just like you see in the Italian bakeries.

Great simple recipe will make again. I followed another reviews advice and drained the liquid from the can of beans and added broth to the mix. Will make again.

These were great. I made them twice: once with chopped up fresh spinach and the other time with chopped up mushrooms. Both times they were great. Will make again.

Pesto Sauce

Reviewed: Dec. 19, 2008
This was very good but a little bit on the heavy side..probably because of the one cup of olive oil. I think next time I'll make with a 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/2 cup broth.

Basboosa II

Reviewed: Feb. 6, 2009
This is a great recipe (sometimes also called Hareesa)and very much like what my Egyptian mother makes. Unfortunately Mom makes all these wonderful recipes but she can't give you exact measurements-she does it all by sight. I do have some recommendations: Buy the medium semolina (sometimes called #2) because the fine semolina makes it difficult for the syrup to absorb throughout the whole basboosa. Also, at the end of the baking time, turn the broiler on for 2-3 minutes to give the top a golden brown color. Last, make sure to double the syrup ingredients. Boil the syrup for 5 minutes then simmer for about 10 minutes.

Beef Stew with Dumplings

Great stew recipe. The only reason I would not make it again is that it was so time consuming. I would say definitely more than 20 min prep time.

Chewy Sugar Cookies

Reviewed: Jul. 15, 2009
This just came out terrible. It tasted like you were eating boiled eggs and they weren't sweet enough. I don't know what I might have done wrong. I only made half the batch (the raw dough was delicious by the way) and put the other half in the fridge. The next day I made the other half and decided to bake it longer than the recommended 8-10 minutes. I baked it for 12 minutes and still eggy. I would have given it one star but I'm giving it two just because I wonder if I did something wrong although I do make cookies a lot and never had this problem before. By the way I used Large organic eggs.

Roasted Garlic Cauliflower

Reviewed: Jul. 22, 2009
I made this recipe twice. The first time I steamed the cauliflower till it was fully cooked then followed the directions except for it baked for only 12 minutes and broiled for 2-4. The second time I put the cauliflower in the oven raw as per the directions. Both times were very good but I preferred the cooking/steaming the cauliflower first. That way it was absolutely delicious and the garlic didn't burn so much.

Sweet Potato and Apple Casserole

Reviewed: Jul. 22, 2009
This was great. I had some kiwis on hand so I added them. Next time I will take the advice of some reviewers and bake the potatoes instead of boiling. I'm thinking that way they'll be naturally sweeter and then I'll need less brown sugar.
