I am 44 years old and newly repatriated to the U.S.A. Living in Canada widened my perspectives on many things, not the least of which is food! While I've always devoted the majority of my time to baking and desserts( my first job was as a pastry chef), I am also a grill freak and a crock pot junkie! Hard to get away without some talent there in this busy world.
My favorite things to cook
I'll always be fond of baking. I love to decorate cakes as well and enjoy working with gum paste most as it blends my skills as a potter/sculptor with cooking and celebration.
I like to cook with anything I grew. Heirloom tomatoes are THE BOMB! I know you can't really call it cooking when you chop a bunch of them up and put them on a plate with good olive oil and balsamic then chow down with a baguette, but I have to admit it is my favorite dish!
My favorite family cooking traditions
I know it sounds boring and common, but it's got to be Christmas cookies. I just bake batch after batch and have to MAKE myself stop. My daughters, both in University now, remember cookies the most and I'm hoping they will be my biggest fans here(on allrecipes and on earth)!
My cooking triumphs
I still feel most triumphant when the entire Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner makes it to the table HOT! It is one of the most difficult skills to master and can ruin even the best technique. Timing is everything! Good ovens don't hurt either!
My cooking tragedies
My daughter's 4th birthday cake. EEEEKKKK! Nothing about it was good. She loved carrot cake so I made her favorite recipe. Frosted it with amazing cream cheese frosting to make it special. The molasses bled into the frosting and it looked really AWFUL! I discovered this as it was about to be served to 40+ guests. It looked so bad it tasted bad too. Live and learn.
