I'm a 29 year old wife and mother who just moved out to the country. I am a musician and love to create. Being this far out really is bringing my cooking to a new level as I have less conveniences available and make more from scratch.
My favorite things to cook
Local, local, local. I find that it is the freshest, healthiest way to eat. I buy as much as possible from local farmers, and gave up meat from the grocery stores in the interest of health and safety. My husband and I also grow our own veggies and herbs in the summer and go mostly vegetarian when the garden is going full blast. I love baking bread and cookies, and being creative with what we have on hand. I'll take any opportunity to learn a new skill in the kitchen, and find it empowering to opt out of the industrial food chain.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Pot lucks, when we all bring our own creations together for one fantastic meal! Usually at the Piney river in the summer, absolute bliss! Also, summertime canning with my mother in law.
My cooking triumphs
Making bread from scratch, making cheese at home, my famous enchiladas, getting my husband to enjoy tofu, and my summer bruschetta.
My cooking tragedies
Starting my own yeast (still working on it) turned out not so great on my first try, mostly made a big mess. Then there was the marinara I slaved on all day, only to put it in the blender without the top on. My husband took me out for Italian that night :)
