Me and a silver salmon
About this Cook
I'm a diehard foodie, so I guess my attraction to cooking is the end (and edible!) result as much as it's the technical challenge to execute a new dish.
My favorite things to cook
I don't really have a "favorite", and each year immerse myself in a new cuisine to learn new techniques. This year I'm attempting to master classic French cooking; last year was Cajun/Creole, the year before was Spanish. You get the picture.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I'm still confused as to how cooking became such a passion. Nearly everything Mom made came out of a box, and the only time Dad ever touched a stove was to make breakfast.
My cooking triumphs
When a particuluarly unimpressable friend refused to believe that my very simple, very homemade chocolate chip cookies weren't from a pre-made dough or box. It was particularly satisfying since I only bake a couple of times per year.
My cooking tragedies
Let us not speak of the 'Jambalaya Incident'. Lesson learned: fresh bulk cayenne is far more potent than the typical bottled variety.

Shepherd's Pie VI
This is the first shepherd's pie I've ever made that had a real "wow" factor. I followed the recipe almost exactly; the only revision was adding two tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce. My anticipation was that half would be leftover for lunches- but after my husband's second and third helpings, there wasn't any left! I really appreciate the from-scratch approach: although it might be tempting to cut corners by using other recipes' call for highly processed cream-of-whatever soup, your tastebuds will thank you for taking the time to make this comfort food the way it was meant to be prepared.

Chocolate Fudge Buttercream Frosting
Absolutely phenomenal. First recipe I've tried for this type of frosting, and I don't need to look any further.

Curried Coconut Chicken
Absolutely brilliant dish. I made it exactly per the directions, and the result was just as good as the coconut-curry chicken I had at a roadside dinner, deep in the heart of Belize. This is going into regular rotation for my home dinner menu!
