How I Came To Be On Allrecipes....

I am an Allrecipes Allstar Brand Ambassador (a voluntary position) and I’m not compensated for my work with Products received from advertiser are only used for experienced-based reviews on Life in an RV. The reviews, content and opinions expressed in this blog are purely the sole opinions of Life in an RV and witchywoman.

I've been challenged to write a blog about how I came to Allrecipes. While I can't recall the exact recipe or the what the hell I googled to get here, I got here. I think I'm getting "some-timers" because I just can't remember. I suppose that tends to happen the older we get. I do know that I used Allrecipes for several years before I created my profile in 2007 and I created my profile because I had discovered the Recipe Exchange. I have a hard time with change and I have a hard time calling it the "Recipe Buzz" because a "Buzz" is what I get when I pound down too many shots of Patron. So, for this blog, it will be referred to as the "Exchange". I'm old, what can I say???
When I started on the Exchange, SunnyByrd was there, so were Celeste, Cindy Lepp and many others and we all formed a tight-knit, helpful group and we were all so supportive of others. I left the Exchange for a while because we were in the midst of moving out of our house and into our first 17-foot travel trailer and it was several months before I got internet hooked up. But, eventually, the call of the internet was too much and I did get back online and that is when I discovered that on Allrecipes, you could purchase a supporting membership and then I discovered the world of blogs. Wonderful things, these blogs. I could sit and read them for hours. And I did!! I purchased a 6-month membership just to see if I would like it. About a month after that, we bought this 21-foot fifth wheel trailer that we still live in and I posted the first post of Life in an RV and life has not been the same since. I'm not complaining about it...actually, the opposite. I had no idea that I could write...let alone that anyone would read the d@mn thing...but all of my friends on AR propelled that thing to the most popular list and I've never looked back.
Life has a funny way of working out and it's usually not what we plan on. I posted my first blog here in November 2009 and since then, my plans on how my life would turn out totally changed. I quit my job as a cocktail waitress and have been writing ever since.
You all were talking about that movie, Julie & Julia, on the Exchange, so I knew that I had to watch it. I went out and bought it, watched it, loved it and decided that I would take a spark of an idea and base my blog upon that. At first, I was only going to cook from 52 countries, but after I finished the first year, I couldn't stop and I cooked from my 77th country, Montserrat, just this last week. I will continue on and cook from every country in the world.
I have to thank Allrecipes for my new career. Not only do I still write Life in an RV (, I've had Life in an RV mentioned in a national RV Travel magazine...apparently, they liked my idea of using old cat litter buckets and kiddie wading pools to garden in...I've also been invited by several websites to display their widgets, Foodista is one of them...they really liked my oyster recipe...I've submitted Life in an RV to several websites and it was accepted to display all sorts of widgets: The Foodie Blog Roll, Very Good Recipes, Blog Frog and I'm also a Food Buzz featured publisher and I'm pretty active on that site. I was asked to write a monthly column for one of our local newspapers, The Valley Bugler (, based on my blog. My editor loved the idea that I've always made my blog interactive with all of my readers, so Bugler readers submit international recipes and I cook them up in the ol' RV and write about them. I've also started a private Facebook group based on Life in an RV and my Peeps of the Page, as I call them, number almost 300 members and many AR'ers...Swiss Phil, Cindy Lepp, Mis7up, mauigirl, Marianne, IrishCattleWoman, RockyMountainKat, laughingmagpie, Virginia Mom, whodunitdr, BroncosFan, Alex, and I know I'm leaving a ton of Peeps out, but I don't have enough room on this blog to list all of you....are there.
About a year ago, I was asked to be an Allrecipes Allstar Brand Ambassador and I'm glad that I accepted! It's been a pretty good gig...and I think there is a link somewhere on this site that a person can click on for more information if you want to hook up with that. It's nothing fancy...we're just a bunch of cooks who are up for monthly challenges. That's big mystery!
So that, buds, is how I got my start on Allrecipes...and, you know, fate has a way of throwing you a curve ball and sometimes that curve ball just smacks you right upside the head...and I am thankful it did or I wouldn't be where I'm at right now!

Apr. 22, 2012 4:55 am
Laurrie - you're one of the reasons I "Joined up" on this site. I loved reading your blogs and enjoyed getting to know everyone on this site. Good luck on the move into a house! I have to say your twinkie tiramisu in a cup recipe (the real name escapes me; I too have sometimers and it's getting worse!) is a hit at my house - my son got a huge kick out of them! I haven't made them in a while, but think I will be now that I remembered them again. LOL
Apr. 22, 2012 6:51 am are pretty cool yourself! Mother got the name right, it's Twinkie Tiramisu...LOL! You don't know how long this move into a house has been WAY overdue. Bob joined the electrician's union, so work is fairly local for him. It's nice to have him home every night to cook dinner for, but I really do miss my big bed...the gig we're playing now doesn't leave a person much room for sleeping :/ You are one of the people on this site that I think about often and I really do miss chatting with you! I should give you a call one of these weekends when you & I aren't so d@mn busy!!
Apr. 22, 2012 6:52 am
Love it!! Thank you so much for your blog!!

Laurrie - I really thought my life would slow down when the kids both grew up and moved out. Who the He$$ was I trying to kid?? LOL Now I'm busy doing the stuff I want to do.... LOL Glad Bob is home more and working - it is more fun to cook when there's someone else around to enjoy it with you.

About Me
I've been married to my husband for over 8 years. My husband is a cancer survivor. We live in SW Washington state by Mt. St. Helens, but I'm originally from Forks, the little town made famous by the Twilight movies. My blog is called Baked Lava and I'm currently cooking my way around the world. I write a monthly column for our local newspaper called Life in an RV and that site is I've had my blog featured in Trailblazer Magazine. I love my recycled container garden and I love to create new recipes. I rarely follow a recipe to the letter, unless it involves baking. My husband & I don't have children unless you count the 4-legged variety...we have 4 of those: Puppa, Sasha, KiKi & Super Dave the Girl Cat. I am a prize-winning nature photographer.
My favorite things to cook
I don't have really a favorite thing to cook, per say...I'm not afraid to cook anything. I've recently taught myself how to can and make bread. I still have no great love of making cookies. I'm getting very well-versed in worldwide cuisine, as I'm cooking my way around the world. I love to create new recipes and rarely, anymore, do I have one that flops, but it does and will happen...the road to hell was paved with good intentions, or so they say. My favorite cuisine in this worldwide culinary adventure has been, so far, Belgium...fantastic food! I also am partial to Vietnamese, Korean, Azerbaijani and Hungarian cuisine...and Middle Eastern food kicks @ss!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My favorite family cooking tradition is the weekly international meals that I prepare. The tradition is that my blog readers choose what country they would like to see from week to week and I cook an entire meal for 4 people with a budget of $20. Right now I am in the middle of my "Austerity" project where we are solely eating from the freezers and really have to creative to do this and I am making up recipes as I go...I have used a few AR recipes and credit back to them, though.
My cooking triumphs
I've had several of my original recipes published, I've had my blog featured in a magazine, I now write a monthly food column based on my blog for our local newspaper and I'm already one year into my cooking venture of Around the World in an RV. I am a Food Buzz featured publisher, I'm on PetitChef, RecipesUS and Foodista among many, many other cooking websites. I guess it's safe to say that due to my cooking, I have now ventured into the world of food blogging and into a smaller group of us fellow global food bloggers and I've made some amazing friends.
My cooking tragedies
There have been several and there aren't enough characters in the 1000 allotted to list them all down!
