Pacific Northwest Beach Bash AR Get Together

Whew! It's been a long time since I've been over here!
I've been meeting quite a few people from AllRecipes in the last year or so. I see everyone is having get togethers, so I thought I would throw out an invitation to my fellow Pac NW'ers to attend an AR Beach Bash here in Washington on Saturday, August 20th.
Nothing fancy, just BBQed burgers and hot dogs...it'll be a family affair where kids are completely welcome. I picked the date because August is when we have our gorgeous weather here in Washington. The beach is phenominal and I think everyone will have a blast.
If I can get enough people that want to commit to this, I can check into renting the caretaker's quarters at the North Head Lighthouse by Cape Disappointment State Park on the Long Beach Peninsula. It's on a cliff overlooking the ocean and there is camping nearby at the state park or there are plenty of reasonably priced hotels in many of the little towns around the area: Ilwaco, Long Beach, Ocean Park...or Oregon: Astoria, Seaside and Cannon Beach.
If you are interested in this, send me an email laurriepiland at hotmail dot com or catch up with me on Facebook or my blog http://lifeinanarv.blogspot.com.
So far, tentatively, Allrecipes Elizabeth, mis7up, Keri, RockyMtKat, mauigirl, laughingmagpie and myself are ready to party...but, the more the merrier!
This is still in the planning stage, so any ideas are welcome, but I know that I want to have it at the beach!
Rock on, everyone & peace!

Actually, mis7up is going to make some marinaded ribs that sound fantastic! Nothing better than a party at the beach!!

May 17, 2011 9:40 am
I won't be able to make the party. Just wanted to say it's great to see you on the board here!

May 17, 2011 9:43 am
Mike! How are you???? You sure are a sight for sore eyes...LOL!

May 17, 2011 9:45 am
I wish you could come...nothing better than a big informal BBQ at the beach! How is the cancer treatment coming along? Bob got the go-ahead from his oncologist, so I'm happy to say that he is cancer-free and he's as mouthy as ever!

May 17, 2011 10:18 am
Geez, ww! How I would like to come up there! You will have so much fun!

May 17, 2011 10:38 am
I wish you could make it, too, Marianne...so far there are 17 confirmed and tentative people coming...

WW-it's great to see you here. I have been following your blog. I can't make the trip from Ohio but it sure sounds like a great time!

jabberwokky....I think there is a Buckeye reunion going on next month...maybe you could make that one? Meeting AR members is such a cool thing, every one that I've met so far has turned out to be awesome. And, thanks for following the blog!

Yes, I know and unfortunately I can't make that one either! Ugh! We have a wedding that day. Of course, the one wedding we have all summer is that same day.

May 17, 2011 5:15 pm
I got it, Michelle...wasn't Forks a fun town in the 70's??????

May 17, 2011 5:39 pm
http://funbeach.com/hotels-motels-and-cottages This is taking place during the Kite Festival, so there will be a ton of things to do and see around the area...make sure to book your rooms early or there won't be any available!

May 17, 2011 9:12 pm
There are camping spaces available at Cape Disappointment, including some yurts! Also check out Astoria, just across the Columbia, not too far from Cape D....Some B and B's on the Peninsula that are nice...cottages and cabins and a Super 8. Please book early, as the town is full of people here for the Kite Festival. Lots of stuff for kids to do, too....See you all in August! I live here....You will love it!!!!

May 18, 2011 4:13 am
Absolutely, Kat...it's going to be a blast!!

May 18, 2011 5:13 am
Darn it! I'd love to come and see your part of the country but we've had some minor setbacks here. Looks like you had a great time in Vegas! I'll have to catch up with your blog but not today off for supplies for the DS's graduation party this weekend :)

May 18, 2011 5:16 am
If anyone wants to camp at Cape Disappointment, let me know...I have tons of camping gear.

May 18, 2011 5:26 am
Cat...I wasn't able to make Vegas, darn it! I've been in stand-by with Bob because he's due to be called back to work anytime...you know, one of those life things? Give me a call so we can catch up and compare gardens!

One more little piece of trivia for the people who don't know the area...Long Beach is one of the longest beaches in the world that you can drive on. Yes, you can drive on that sucker from Long Beach to Ocean Shores and it's an actual state road with a 25 MPH speed limit. Marsh's Museum is in town and it's home to Jake the Alligator Man and various other hokey, but cool things. There are bumper boats, horseback riding, go-carts and the cranberry bogs. You can also get the BEST salt water taffy in too many flavors to list, but huckleberry is one of them. It's a small town, but so much fun in the summer. The Kite Festival is a must-see, so I'm glad that I picked this weekend, although, I didn't know it until RockyMtKat sent me a message letting me know that. So, if you want to attend, now is the time to make your reservations or there simply won't be anything left. This town is filled to max occupancy during the kite festival weekend. Like Kat said, Astoria, Oregon is across the bridge and there are many places there, too. Seaside is less than 1/2 hour away and they have a small aquarium where you can feed the seals. Again, my email is laurriepiland at hotmail dot com if anyone wants additional info. So, Saturday, August 20th, Cape Disappointment State Park, Waikiki Beach Day Use Area in Long Beach. Time????? Probably around 2 or 3...I figure with everyone in town at the Festival, Waikiki Beach is the place to be!! Oh, yeah...before I forget! There is a ton of hiking trails and there are 2 different lighthouses: North Head Lighthouse and Cape Disappointment Lighthouse and the views are amazing!!

OMGoodness, who will stay in a yurt with me? Those have always fascinated me, that would be so fun!

May 18, 2011 6:16 am
I would, but you can't have dogs in them...you'll love the beach, SD, it's my most favorite spot on Earth!! If you want, I'll see about getting you a roomie...

May 18, 2011 6:18 am
If memory serves me correctly, the yurts are on that little fresh water lake inside the park...within walking distance to Waikiki Beach. This state park is absolutely huge!! You could spend a week in it and not see everything there is to see.

YYYEEAAAA WW!! It would soo fun to be there with you> I have a hard time getting hubby out of the city let alone the State. Your part of the country is just Gorgeous!! Thanks for the invite. So nice to see you again Sweety!

aw.. this sounds amazing :) to bad I don't think I will be able to make it up there in August, but I really want to visit the Pacific northwest my husband lived in Oregon for a few years growing up and has fond memories. On a side note, not that I hang out in the message n=boards and blogs to much but have there been or are there any AZ/southwest meetup's being planned? (would have liked to make it to Vegas but with buying house right now it wasn't an option)

About Me
I've been married to my husband for over 8 years. My husband is a cancer survivor. We live in SW Washington state by Mt. St. Helens, but I'm originally from Forks, the little town made famous by the Twilight movies. My blog is called Baked Lava www.bakedlava.com and I'm currently cooking my way around the world. I write a monthly column for our local newspaper called Life in an RV and that site is www.valleybugler.com. I've had my blog featured in Trailblazer Magazine. I love my recycled container garden and I love to create new recipes. I rarely follow a recipe to the letter, unless it involves baking. My husband & I don't have children unless you count the 4-legged variety...we have 4 of those: Puppa, Sasha, KiKi & Super Dave the Girl Cat. I am a prize-winning nature photographer.
My favorite things to cook
I don't have really a favorite thing to cook, per say...I'm not afraid to cook anything. I've recently taught myself how to can and make bread. I still have no great love of making cookies. I'm getting very well-versed in worldwide cuisine, as I'm cooking my way around the world. I love to create new recipes and rarely, anymore, do I have one that flops, but it does and will happen...the road to hell was paved with good intentions, or so they say. My favorite cuisine in this worldwide culinary adventure has been, so far, Belgium...fantastic food! I also am partial to Vietnamese, Korean, Azerbaijani and Hungarian cuisine...and Middle Eastern food kicks @ss!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My favorite family cooking tradition is the weekly international meals that I prepare. The tradition is that my blog readers choose what country they would like to see from week to week and I cook an entire meal for 4 people with a budget of $20. Right now I am in the middle of my "Austerity" project where we are solely eating from the freezers and cupboards...you really have to creative to do this and I am making up recipes as I go...I have used a few AR recipes and credit back to them, though.
My cooking triumphs
I've had several of my original recipes published, I've had my blog featured in a magazine, I now write a monthly food column based on my blog for our local newspaper and I'm already one year into my cooking venture of Around the World in an RV. I am a Food Buzz featured publisher, I'm on PetitChef, RecipesUS and Foodista among many, many other cooking websites. I guess it's safe to say that due to my cooking, I have now ventured into the world of food blogging and into a smaller group of us fellow global food bloggers and I've made some amazing friends.
My cooking tragedies
There have been several and there aren't enough characters in the 1000 allotted to list them all down!
