Tonight was the night for Germany...I think even Super Dave the Girl Cat wanted a bite! It's been raining cats and dogs the last couple of days, we lost power last night and when I drove Bob to meet his shuttle this morning, there were at least 3 cottonwoods knocked down by the wind. Avon put it well---we are starting to mold! Anyway, the fur kids were lazy today and not underfoot, so that's a good thing!


I don't know how this isn't driving Bob nuts...it sure would me...vultures!! Bob has 4 treatments left and then they will scope his throat and see if he needs additional ones. They ran the scope down on Tuesday and the tumor has shrunk by 3/4's. That's cause for celebration!! And we need to celebrate! He's been grouchy, grumpy and tired. He tried to eat tonight but didn't have much luck even after taking his lidocaine syrup. But he did manage to taste everything and gave it all thumbs up.


The start of the onion pie...peel and cut 3 pounds of onions. This only took me 45 minutes to do because I had to stop every minute or so and splash cold water in my eyes to take away the sting and then I had to wait for them to quit tearing up...it's worth the effort, to me....



because this was the end result. Gorgeous to look at and it tastes phenominal, too!



Again, thanks to Beckey Dodds...not only for the information you are about to recieve, but a huge thanks for the custard powder and wonderful chocolate I recieved today...I'm going to mess around with that this weekend. And I have to say, Beckey, I always thought I had really nice handwriting, but yours puts mine to shame!!!

Germany is a rich agricultural country with many cuisines. Germany, a powerful empire, was unified in 1871, until then there was no capitol. In the unification, Berlin was chosen as the capitol city and remained that way until the end of World War II, in 1949, when the country divided into the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) with Bonn as the capitol and the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) with East Berlin being it's capitol. Germany remained this way until the decline of the USSR and the end of the cold war when it was reunified in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other European countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the Euro.


This is the dressing for the German Potato Salad...bacon grease, sugar, flour, water and cider vinegar...









And, of course, green onions from my container garden...they are quite tasty!






Come together with crumbled bacon for a delicious treat...German Potato Salad! I've never had it, I've looked at recipes dozens of times and thought I wouldn't care for it, and, for the record, I was so far off base with that assumption, I wasn't even in the ballpark! It's fantastic and I think this will be my new potato salad from now on....YUM!

Germany consisted of what had been several loosely integrated kingdoms, in the west, Prussia, Saxony and Bavaria. Each kingdom had it's own specialties whcih it shared during the first four brief decades of unity. Some of the specialties, such as Konigsberger (I don't know how to get the dots over the "O") Klopse-meatballs made of ground pork, beef, bacon and anchovies, served with a creamy sauce, has achieved the status of a national dish. Regional specialties are dictated by was has been traditionally grown, raised or caught in the area.







Pork is the most common meat and Germans can do magical things with it. Sausage making has become an art form an dit is said there are as many varieties of sausage as there are towns in Germany. Cabbage is the national vegetable.

This is the Currywurst sauce...it tasted to Bob and me like Spaghetti-O's. And when I was a kid, I loved Spaghetti-O's, this brought back a wave of nostalgia for me...








I was iffy at first, I thought it looked like chopped up hot dogs drenched in ketchup and I wasn't digging that! But, again, I made an @ss outta myself with my assumption...another fantastic dish!












And here is my German dinner! Absolutely to-die for!







And I can't forget those delicious pancakes! Or crepes, or blintzes or whatever....the first one was a pain in my @ss to flip over, the second was a breeze! I ran a toothpick around the edges first and then folded it over with my heat resistant spatula...












My Caramel-Disaronno Apple Filling: 3 red delicious apples, peeled and cored and sauteed in 2 tablespoons of butter. Add in cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg to taste along with a teaspoon of vanilla and 2 tablespoons of Disaronno (a super good, top-shelf amaretto) and 3 tablespoons of brown sugar...let it all hang in the pan until it smells great and the apples are soft and put it on top of those German pancakes....oh, yeah!!















Just like that...that's what I'm talking about!




Groceries for tonight's dinner ran me $15.55 and that includes the $6 hand mixer I got at Walmart. I burned up my last one when I made the Irish dinner. I was able to still put $4.45 into the Beach Bag for a total of $125.85 after 20 weeks...can you believe this is almost half over...20 weeks...REALLY??? But, yes, it has been this long.

Neither person that Bob pulled out of the hat last Friday responded back to my emails, so Bob and I chose countries. Bob chose Ethiopia and I chose Cambodia. I got thoroughly spanked on this vote...it was shameful! You all, apparently, want to see Ethiopia!

Oh, I almost forgot!! I went to reach into the cupboard for a baggie and smacked my left middle finger on the sharp cutting strip for the aluminum foil and got a pretty decent cut that went through my nail and into the nail bed and along the cuticle. It took a good couple of hours of a pressure bandage, but it finally quit bleeding. If I would have cut myself anywhere else, I would have had to put this dinner on hold to go and get stitched up...but I'll be fine and I have cut myself WAY worse than this before...just a lesson...always close those stinking boxes with the sharp cutting edges!!! What can I say? I am a klutz!! Until we meet up in Ethiopia next week, pray for Kathleen's friends' little boy, Benjamin and I wish you all peace! I'm out!!

Beautiful job again. Glad to hear Bob's tumor is shrinking or at least appears to be, sorry he doesn't feel great. How's Yul blending into the family? May the sun shine in your neighborhood cause I think I'm molding too due to the rain!!!!

Yul is still up in Olympia at the vet...I don't know, Leah may fall in love with him and not want to give him up...either way is ok with me, as long as he has a home!

LOL!!! They change the sound of a word, it's second nature to me, and I am trying but I can't think of any examples to explain what I mean..... Sorry!!!! There is also ß which makes a double S sound although not commonly used any more!

Okay first this looks great as always. I love German potato salad. Second the problem with reading your blog is I always want to go eat even if I have just eaten. Hmm is that really a problem =) I make a different style of German pancakes for my kiddos all the time, they puff up? Must be a different type of recipe? Finally 45 minutes cutting onions that is a feat my friend, I am impressed! My brother was a prep chef on the slope while working through college. He cut so many onions once his nail bent back - yuck. Good news for Bob still praying for the best.

Nice one! I've enjoyed all your travels so far, but this is my fave food-wise! I think it appealed to my 1/4 German nature. That onion pie would look great in our deli and I LOVE German potato sland but havn't had it in years. Glad Bob's reslts are positive. As always your animals are darling/crazy!

It's good to hear that Bob's tumor is shrinking. The food does look good, for sure! My husband travels to Germany every year, but oddly his favorite place to eat is a Chinese restaurant. He says it's the best Chinese food he's ever had...and he also goes to China at least once a year! Oh...and I love Super Dave the Girl Cat...we have a girl cat named Grandpa.

looks amazing as always! i know i haven't mentioned this to you, but since you're sort of going through this as well i thought i would let you know that today i found out my mom is cancer free. she had non-hodgkins lymphoma and was in stage 3 (of 4) and as of today she is cancer free. she had one chemo treatment today and one more left in 3 weeks just to be safe. and the rain/hail lately has stunk! i don't mind rain (since i am use to living in the Pacific NorthWest) but man i am ready for some sun. love the animal pics and of course your food looks amazing.

GoodEatNZ used onion jam this week, and here you are making onion pie. If I didn't know better, I'd think you were both sniffing something, but I TRUST your culinary savy...both, so it must be just ME that's bemused. ;o) Ethiopia here we come! OK, Avon...how'd you do that over the "O"'s??? I used a 3 lb. bag of boiler onions and they made me mad. I bought them at Winco and several of the onions I had to cut half or more away because of mold....LOL!

here is a little peice of advice for the onions, one word, cucumbers. htey have saved me countless times have a pair of them cold ready to go when you start and when they hurt justpop them on for a few seconds i tell you it works evry time. glad to hear bob is better.

I think this is your best post yet! Everything looks amazing. All of your pictures look gorgeous. Budding photographer you are. Tip for cutting onions: Wear sunglasses while you do it and the vapor won't get in your eyes as easily. I never tried it because onions don't make me cry odd enough. But always worth a shot!

We are crossing our fingers, sueb...thanks for the prayers, we are truly, deeply grateful for each and everyone that all of you send our way...I 100% believe that all of you that have sent prayers and positive thoughts have had a hand in his recovery and, to me, that's just, for lack of a better term, awe-inspiring. I made carne asada last night and I'm thankful he could actually get a piece of it down. He was too. He loves steak in every size, shape and form. Every time we go out for Mexican, carne asada is what he orders, so it's great to know that I can just make it here and for a heck of a lot cheaper...thanks for the compliment on the meal. Germany has been, by far, one of my favorite meals...it was absolutely delicious and I will be making those recipes again when Bob can eat them!

I LOVE onions. Have since I was a little girl, when my daddy would make onion and mayo sandwiches for him and me. I will have to try that onion pie, BTW, it looked AWESOME. So did all the other food. As always the writing was superab. I am praying that they get it the first time. I hope that he gets to feeling better. I will also pray for you friend.

WW...its not really that intriguing. I took the name from one of my favorite books. Its a sci-fi book written by Joan D. Vinge, its actually 3 Books, The Snow Queen, World's End, and The Summer Queen. I have been using mdawntrader since finding the books for the first time. They are awesome books, and I read them alot, probably more then I should. Moon Dawntrader is one of the characters. Most just call me Moon, there are a couple of guys on the NASCAR blog that call me their Moonbeam, LOL. So there you go, intriguing, I guess to some it would be, LOL.

I am hopeing that your finger is better, We use to live in the NW (Seattle) currently I live in Yucaipa, Ca. its a small town thats growing fast... I am an avid reader of the twilight series and when I saw you were from Forks, I said wow they live where the series Twilight is based and then read what you said.... Wow!...Have a great trip! good stuff WitchyWoman! I am half German, so it REALLY looks good. I have never been a fan of German potato salad,but yours actually looks good! BTW, I was making my usual rice and lentils, and as I was cutting sweet potatoes I cut my forefinger almost where you did. I did not go through my nail though...OUCH!!! Mine goes from the nail down to the first knuckle. At least it got my husband to do the rest of the chopping, lol. As if I have never cut myself in 40 years of cooking. Anyway, I thought of you right away and felt empathy. :) Yummy recipe! I have to try those apples, I have Amarula, should work....yum! Great job! My German half is hungry now!

Yummo and well done Witchy. Believe it or not, the best German food I ever had was in Australia.. go figure. Good news for Bob.. you should treat him some night to dinner in Rainier at the Interstate Tavern.. the crab dishes there.. well, let's just say you'll be spoiled forever. She makes an open-faced crab sandwich that is to die for. Crab comes in right off the dock across the street and down the hill.

Hi BellesAZ...we go over there for the crab sandwiches all the time...they ARE fantastic!! I also like to stop at the Lighthouse Inn in Linnton there jsut before you get into Portland on Hwy 30...the owner has a Mexican cook that can make fried razor clams you can cut with a butter knife! He always gets a $20 tip from us every time we stop!!

I just finished reading a few of your blogs from the past few days... so are you traveling around the world and cooking their foods?? or are you just cooking the different foods over the next few weeks??? either way I wish I could do something like that... I dont think my husband would even try different types of food, or my teenage daughter for that matter. :)

Oh WW, you have out done yourself again. I love onions and I could eat that whole pie by myself!! I am part German and I love the food! We have an Alpine Village here in LA and I go there and get the Best sausage and kraut add spicy mustard and rich brown bread and you have a wonderful lunch. OMG!! I come home and put a sausage sammie together and it's like a party in my mouth! I need to get over there and get more. Glad your dinner turned out so well. I hope your hubby gets better soon. WW, I've never tried this but one of the food.tv cooks does it: freeze the onion(s) for 20 mins or so -- it's the JUICE that makes us tear up! Might be an issue in an RV tho' - anyway, just a thought! Keep the ball rolling!

You live in an RV with two large dogs AND a cat? Does the cat go out to get away from the dogs or do they all get along? I love the picture of the dog watching Bob eat! And just sitting close enough for a bite of Bob's dinner if it should come his way! Your dinner sounds fantastic -- German food is so yummy! It sounds like you're feeding Bob well -- and I hope he continues to improve.

Hi kasue...Super Dave the Girl Cat only goes outside sporting her hot pink harness and leash. I don't let her roam. I learned a hard lesson with that 2 years ago when she got hit and broke her pelvis and had to have pins put in. It was costly hard learned lesson for us. The vulture little dog is Sasha and her and Dave don't exactly see eye to eye all the time. The dogs have never bit at her, I've had Dave longer than I've had my husband, so everyone knows who rules the roost in our house! It's not hard to live in a small space with everyone, it just involves a ton of sweeping since the park we live in actually built on volcanic ash that was dredged out of the Columbia River after Mt. St. Helens erupted. Thanks for reading!

Actually it is a Hoot! In October, they have an OctoberFest of course and it is sooo much fun!!!! The chicken dance is the only dance I can do and not look like a pogo stick!

Hey, still trying to figure out how to type an ÖÄÜ?? It's actually easy, use the charmap that comes with windows and it'll let you copy any letter there is into your text! :) Aside from that, being from Germany I can say that your food looks pretty authentic! Actually, a special kind of sausage is used to make currywurst. You can get it here on every corner, but probably not in the US...

Hey Patty Cakes, I don't think I'd even be able to do the chicken dance, I have 10 left feet and no sense of rhythm as far as dancing goes...it's funny...I can keep a beat with music, but not dancing...I look like I'm having a seizure or something...it's pathetic!

Hi Olli...what kind of sausage do they use in Germany? Just curious, that way I can look for it! I'm definately making currywurst again, it was delicious!!

It's actually simply called Currywurst! It (i.e. the recipe) differs depending on where you are. They are even different in east and west Berlin!!! A lot of people simply use Bratwurst (the ones you'd get for a barbecue) or brewed sausages (similiar to Hot Dogs). The actual Currywurst isn't stuffed into some bowels buit has a thin plastic skin that needs to be removed before preparing it. It's a pretty long sausage (about 12" or more I'd assume) and is about 2 fingers in diameter (or a little less). It has a different aroma and consistency than any other "Wurst". :) After it's done, you cut it into pieces (like you did) and serve it with the sauce and some curry powder on top. Typical sides are fries or white bread/a roll. If you ever need any stuff (ingredients) from over here that can be send by mail, I'd be glad to help, no problem.

I love your German menu! I've lived there as a student, and my husband spent some years there while in the service. We both love German food, and sometimes cook it ourselves. My best wishes for Bob's health, and please keep up the great blogging.

Love your blog WW and I'm happy for your hubs. Still sending the prayers up for him and will for Benjamin. This is the best remedy for cuts, stubs, nicks, whatever (almost!!) Take a fresh clove of garlic and crush it on your cutting board, scrape it onto a small dish, add small teaspoon of honey and mash the garlic and honey together until they make a paste. clean the wound up with soap and water and dry well. spread enough of the garlic paste onto the wound then wrap with a clean bandage (not a bandaid). Each day, clean again with soap and water, dry, spread the garlic paste on the wound, then wrap again with a clean bandage. Try it and see how quick it heals. Garlic is a natural healer. Honey blocks any germs from getting in. Love, love, love the German recipes and all the photos.

The pancakes/crepes are also called Palatschinken. Try the potato salad dressing over mixed greens then slice the crepes into strips & serve on the sides, kinda like croutons. One of my favorite meals growing up. Good to hear Bob is getting better & better!

did you fold your crepe in half in the pan to finish cooking or did you actually flip them over (whole)? I don't want to add oil(butter) but it does make flipping easier. :)

About Me
I've been married to my husband for over 8 years. My husband is a cancer survivor. We live in SW Washington state by Mt. St. Helens, but I'm originally from Forks, the little town made famous by the Twilight movies. My blog is called Baked Lava www.bakedlava.com and I'm currently cooking my way around the world. I write a monthly column for our local newspaper called Life in an RV and that site is www.valleybugler.com. I've had my blog featured in Trailblazer Magazine. I love my recycled container garden and I love to create new recipes. I rarely follow a recipe to the letter, unless it involves baking. My husband & I don't have children unless you count the 4-legged variety...we have 4 of those: Puppa, Sasha, KiKi & Super Dave the Girl Cat. I am a prize-winning nature photographer.
My favorite things to cook
I don't have really a favorite thing to cook, per say...I'm not afraid to cook anything. I've recently taught myself how to can and make bread. I still have no great love of making cookies. I'm getting very well-versed in worldwide cuisine, as I'm cooking my way around the world. I love to create new recipes and rarely, anymore, do I have one that flops, but it does and will happen...the road to hell was paved with good intentions, or so they say. My favorite cuisine in this worldwide culinary adventure has been, so far, Belgium...fantastic food! I also am partial to Vietnamese, Korean, Azerbaijani and Hungarian cuisine...and Middle Eastern food kicks @ss!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My favorite family cooking tradition is the weekly international meals that I prepare. The tradition is that my blog readers choose what country they would like to see from week to week and I cook an entire meal for 4 people with a budget of $20. Right now I am in the middle of my "Austerity" project where we are solely eating from the freezers and cupboards...you really have to creative to do this and I am making up recipes as I go...I have used a few AR recipes and credit back to them, though.
My cooking triumphs
I've had several of my original recipes published, I've had my blog featured in a magazine, I now write a monthly food column based on my blog for our local newspaper and I'm already one year into my cooking venture of Around the World in an RV. I am a Food Buzz featured publisher, I'm on PetitChef, RecipesUS and Foodista among many, many other cooking websites. I guess it's safe to say that due to my cooking, I have now ventured into the world of food blogging and into a smaller group of us fellow global food bloggers and I've made some amazing friends.
