Weekend at the Beach
I wanna go!
Puppa on the beach.

My evening walk on the beach.

The beach is like a regular road with a 25 mph speed limit.

Seagull convention!

Tide's coming in...

The beach road...

This is what happens when you try to cross a river in a dune buggy...you get STUCK!

One of the many beautiful homes that are along the beach...

One-legged seagull...

Cape Disappointment Lighthouse and Waikiki Beach

This is as good as it gets...it was so rainy and I couldn't get the camera to focus any better than this!

Waikiki Beach and Cape Disappointment Lighthouse

Cape Disappointment Lighthouse...I was disappointed that I couldn't focus in any better!

Tired trio!

The one and only sunset that I got to see!

Ocean Park, Washington

Green Grass and High Tides!

The high surf...

The hot tub building and bamboo garden surrounding it!

The trail from the hotel to the beach!

The bamboo garden at the hotel that surrounds the hot tub building...

The surf...

There are miles and miles of these dunes and beach grass.

High Surf!

Ocean Park, Washington

My first really good ocean picture!

On the trail from the hotel...

I was trying to keep up with a big dog and snap a picture at the same time!

The observation platform that the hotel built...

Self explanatory

Small weather-beaten tree growing in the sand dunes...

The hotel that we stayed at!

Wow, Laurrie, it looks like such a beautiful place and what a nice relaxation time you had! The motel let you keep the dogs with you? That's too cool~!
Feb. 15, 2010 8:00 am
Oh how BEAUTIFUL!! I wish I could have been there!! My most favorite place in the world is the beach and then the mountains. Absolutely fantastic!! I can almost hear the surf pounding in. Lucky, lucky you!!
Feb. 15, 2010 8:03 am
Lucky you - I'm sure you all had a great time. Wasn't it nice to get out of the "house" for awhile?
Feb. 15, 2010 8:03 am
Love it! Thanks for sharing. Looks like you had an amazing time.
Feb. 15, 2010 8:06 am
I go online and find motels that are dog~friendly, if they're not, we don't go!
Feb. 15, 2010 8:25 am
Just wanted to let you all know that the guy that shot the state trooper in the head over the weekend has still not been caught! The trooper is fine and is healing in a Portland hospital but HOLY COW! You go to the beach for a weekend getaway and still can't get away from the drama! I hope they catch the guy that did it.
Feb. 15, 2010 8:34 am
What a beautiful place! Thanks for sharing those pictures, they are amazing!
Feb. 15, 2010 9:03 am
Oh, so beautiful. I wish I were there now. Will it be as good in the summer? I might be able to go then. Make a book of all your pics. Lots of people would enjoy it.
Feb. 15, 2010 9:04 am
Just what I needed! Thanks WW for the pseudo vacation! Love the Cape Disappointment shot best.
Feb. 15, 2010 9:10 am
Very nice pics - thanks!
Feb. 15, 2010 11:40 am
lived in Hawaii for 13 years, LOOOOOVE the beach, am now 74 yrs. old and a widow, but have such great memories, love your blog, I too cook mostly from scratch, have 4 children and they are scattered from Yuma, AZ to Michigan so get togethers are few and far between, so I have 2 small children lol they are chihuahuas who allow me to live in their house, I don't drive anymore, gave it up beforeI had that accident we all hear about, I garden and am trying earthboxes this year, grew some awesome tomatos last year, I am Cajun from New Orleans, am looking forward to additions you make and am going to try my hand at blogging--is that a word???
Feb. 15, 2010 11:51 am
thanks, killowat...and I'm glad that you enjoy the blog...thanks for commenting!
Feb. 15, 2010 12:32 pm
Beautiful photos! The foggy one of the lighthouse looks perfect to me - I love things shrouded in fog. You have me really missing the beach! I actually prefer it off-season...might have to take a ride this weekend! Thanks!
Feb. 15, 2010 2:04 pm
Great pictures! How cold is it there? It makes me want to go to the beach too, but it is a bit chilly for that right now. The wind off the water can be brutal, but the surf and waves you shot would be worth it. Was that during that hurrican-like storm?
Feb. 15, 2010 2:05 pm
Looks like fun!! Is that the chautauqua by chance? Fun times...!
Feb. 15, 2010 2:46 pm
there were wind gusts of 60-65 mph...but not too cold. No, not Chautauqua...I've stayed there, this hotel was in Ocean Park...Sunset View Resort.
Feb. 15, 2010 3:02 pm
Very cool pics! Hope you had a fantastic time!!
Feb. 15, 2010 3:06 pm
WW: Nice photos, particularly Cape Disappointment. Were you able to get close to the lighthouse? Our kids had never been to the ocean until last summer. Acceptable if you live in the midwest; somewhat embarassing when you live in a coastal state.
Feb. 15, 2010 3:16 pm
I didn't go really that far from my car because of that state trooper getting shot. The Cape Disappointment ones were taken that morning and they still haven't caught the guy...I hope they do, though...that's so uncalled for!
Feb. 15, 2010 3:17 pm
Reminds me of places I'd rather be!
Feb. 15, 2010 3:31 pm
What a nice mini vacation WW. Sounds like fun :)Nice pictures !!
Feb. 15, 2010 4:06 pm

Feb. 15, 2010 4:14 pm

Feb. 15, 2010 5:14 pm
We just had an update on the news: they have the suspected gunman in custody...thank God...
Feb. 15, 2010 5:34 pm
Great pics, the beach is so relaxing.
Feb. 15, 2010 6:16 pm
You are such a natural person, your blogs on living in the trailor, your neighbors, cooking, your critters, now your vacation; and at the same time, your concern for the injured trooper, and the catching of that person who did such a horrible thing to someone who is just doing his duty. Thank you for being interesting to read and allowing us to be a small part of your ordinary life. AND your photos are really nice too.
Feb. 15, 2010 6:19 pm
Hi- thanks for taking me "home"! We just got back from a trip to the beach here where we live (Oahu), but, I have to admit that those WA beaches are where I like it best (guess I've got fog in my blood)! I haven't been back to the WA coast in 11 years- since we moved to Hawaii, and it is wonderful to see your pictures!
Feb. 15, 2010 6:49 pm
Nici...I would have a blast on a Hawaiian beach! But you're right, I think we both have fog in our blood because I love the beach here, too!
Feb. 15, 2010 7:47 pm
Nice blog. It was a great getaway for me even. Seemed very peaceful and beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Feb. 15, 2010 7:49 pm
Beautiful blog as always and beautiful pictures, as always also! WW you are a natural at telling a story. Maybe you should be writing a book! I would buy it!! Keep on blogging and I will keep on reading!
Feb. 15, 2010 7:50 pm

You cought some amazing color inyour sunset photo beautiful!
Feb. 17, 2010 7:43 am
beautiful pictures of your vacation, you take great photos, they really capture the feel of the moment for me. I also loved the Molly Hatchett reference in your caption, my photo albums are full of captions like that but hardly anyone gets them. (sigh)
Feb. 17, 2010 8:04 am
Oh, God, mauigirl...razor clams are my most favorite food...since my husband only likes them in clam chowder, that means whenever I get gifted a limit of them, they are all for my frying pleasure...and I can dig some clams, believe that!! LOL! Those are some fun memories!
Feb. 17, 2010 8:06 am
Tate, I think my favorite picture is the first one, my little girl dog...my husband snapped that when I took the big boy dog out for a walk on the beach...for some reason, we can't take both dogs at once because they act ridiculous, so Sasha was standing in the window waiting for me to come back with her brother and then it was her turn!
Feb. 18, 2010 4:15 am
Great pictures and very nice blog. Beautiful nature! Very interesting to look at the places where other people live.
Feb. 18, 2010 11:19 am
I don't live here...I live about 45 minutes to an hour away, but I wouldn't mind moving here at all!
Feb. 18, 2010 1:24 pm
Thanks for sharing! It makes me look forward to my beach vacation in 1 week!!
Feb. 19, 2010 11:30 am
Hi...We are building a home between Ocean Park and Long Beach. But we are in Montana until it is done. I loved the photos...felt almost like we were home already! What restaurants do you like there?
Feb. 19, 2010 2:22 pm
Hello!!!! OMG, WW!!!! I hafta say that your pictures are absolutely beautiful!! And they have brough back so many memories!! During my husband's Coast Guard career, we spent 3 years living right there at the USCG Station Cape Disappointment and the National Motor Lifeboat School and remember that area VERY well!! And it all hit me when I came across the picture captioned, "The beach is like a regular road with a 25 mph speed limit." I knew almost right away of where you were talking about. Now it's been 22 1/2 years since we've been there but would do ANYTHING to go back .. even if just for a visit!! I'm sure ALOT has changed since then ... but you've kept the visions very vivid!! Thank you!!!
Feb. 19, 2010 5:03 pm
RockyMountainKat...we should get together and BBQ! dcooper...I'm glad I brought back good memories for you!
Feb. 19, 2010 5:07 pm
WW...I will keep you posted as per our move. Yes, a BBQ would be fun. Sometime this summer or fall.....We love the Ship Inn in Astoria, for their fried squid...Delicious!
Feb. 19, 2010 8:28 pm
Cool, it sounds like a lot of fun!!
Feb. 20, 2010 1:13 pm
Thanks for sharing your vacation. Love the beach. Beautiful pictures of the lighthouse. Give me beaches, seafood and lighthouses and I'm a happy camper. We always take our three dogs with us on vacation. Stay at pet friendly places, too. Our two goldens just love the beach and the water fowl. LOL Glad you had a good time.
Feb. 20, 2010 11:36 pm
Beautiful beach pictures. We love the beach, usually go to the Gulf Coast (Gulf Shores) or to Savannah and Tybee Island. I would love to visit the PNW, it is so different than the areas I'm used to seeing.
Feb. 21, 2010 4:22 pm
And I would like to visit far off beaches, myself...I've never met a beach that I didn't like!

About Me
I've been married to my husband for almost 10 years. My husband is a cancer survivor. We live in SW Washington state about 30 miles Mt. St. Helens, but I'm originally from Forks, the little town made famous by the Twilight series. First, I am a food writer. My blog is called Baked Lava and I'm currently cooking my way around the world, a meal from every country and territory and lots of original recipes. I feature my original recipes in a monthly column for our local newspaper. I've had my blog featured in Trailblazer Magazine. I love my container garden and the community garden that I've helped get started. My garden passion is growing rare heirloom tomatoes. I admin several garden groups on Facebook. I love to create new recipes. I don't have children unless you count the 4-legged variety. I am a multiple prize-winning nature photographer. I am also a professional cook and work in the food industry and continue to further my education with every opportunity that comes my way.
My favorite things to cook
I don't have really a favorite thing to cook, per say...I'm not afraid to cook anything. I've recently taught myself how to can and make bread. I still have no great love of making cookies. I'm getting very well-versed in worldwide cuisine, as I'm cooking my way around the world. I love to create new recipes and rarely, anymore, do I have one that flops, but it does and will happen...the road to hell was paved with good intentions, or so they say. My favorite cuisine in this worldwide culinary adventure has been, so far, Belgium...fantastic food! I also am partial to Vietnamese, Korean, Azerbaijani and Hungarian cuisine...and Middle Eastern food kicks @ss!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My favorite family cooking tradition is the weekly international meals that I prepare. The tradition is that my blog readers choose what country they would like to see from week to week and I cook an entire meal for 4 people with a budget of $20. Right now I am in the middle of my "Austerity" project where we are solely eating from the freezers and cupboards...you really have to creative to do this and I am making up recipes as I go...I have used a few AR recipes and credit back to them, though.
My cooking triumphs
I've had several of my original recipes published. I've had my blog featured in a magazine. I now write a monthly food column based on my blog for our local newspaper. I am a Food Buzz featured publisher, I'm on PetitChef, RecipesUS and Foodista among many, many other cooking websites. I guess it's safe to say that due to my cooking, I have now ventured into the world of food blogging and into a smaller group of us fellow global food bloggers and I've made some amazing friends. I've recently had several recipes published in a co-op cookbook of international food bloggers.
My cooking tragedies
There have been several and there aren't enough characters in the 1000 allotted to list them all down! My motto? Nothing ventured, nothing gained. You've got nothing to lose by trying something new!
