Fry Bread Tacos II

Reviewed: Jul. 19, 2009
I only made the fry bread part of the recipe, and I tweaked it so that it became a cross between Navajo fry bread and Chinese scallion pancakes. I increased the salt to a full tablespoon and added about 1/4 cup of chopped scallions (green onions). Oh and I also added a tablespoon of olive oil before mixing, as suggested by another reviewer, even though olive oil is neither Navajo nor Chinese. I prefer the taste of Chinese scallion pancakes, but the texture of fry bread, and this was PERFECT. Yummers!

Boilermaker Tailgate Chili

Reviewed: May 10, 2009
I left out the celery because I'm not fond of it, and heartachingly left out the bell peppers even though I love them, because my boyfriend doesn't. I also used a whole can of beer, because I didn't see the point of keeping half a can around... and I hate drinking the stuff so... in it went! Put in two tablespoons of bacon bits instead of one. Oh and used sriracha hot sauce instead of the usual tabasco because I'm Asian and it's our go-to hot sauce, hehe. I know chili tastes best the day after, but I couldn't help trying some out of the crock pot tonight with Ritz crackers... YUMMMMMMMMMMMMM! Can't wait for tomorrow! =D

Cheeseburger Pancakes

Reviewed: Apr. 6, 2009
These have potential, so perhaps 2.5 stars. As written, they are rather bland. I would double or triple the salt and pepper. It was also difficult to taste the cheese -- half a cup more would probably be better. I wouldn't eat these plain, but they were pretty good served with Secret Burger Sauce. Despite everything, I would make these again after tweaking the recipe.

Creamy Caramel Flan

Reviewed: Mar. 12, 2009
Very very yummy. Didn't expect it it to be QUITE so thick; next time I'll use half a package of cream cheese. Took another reviewer's advice and poured the caramel into a pan that had been resting in the preheated oven. Also put the mixture through a strainer before pouring into pan to get out any remaining lumps of cream cheese.

Blueberry Sour Cream Coffee Cake

Reviewed: Mar. 12, 2009
Used one cup white sugar and half cup brown sugar. Reconstituted dried cranberries with orange juice (covered dried berries with oj and wrapped plastic wrap over it; microwaved one minute and let rest five minutes) to replace fresh blueberries. Very yummy.

Quick Gnocchi

Reviewed: Mar. 2, 2009
I added a tablespoon of EVOO and a teaspoon of herbes de provence (rosemary, marjoram, thyme, and savory) to the gnocchi. I don't think there will be enough for dinner tonight because I just "taste-tested" most of them =)

Guacamole

Reviewed: Feb. 10, 2009
My go-to guacamole recipe, perfect as written. Comparable with the absolutely delicious, yet horribly overpriced, Chipotle guacamole. Come on, $1.25 for one scoop?! Not anymore, when I can make this on my own!

Chicken Enchiladas I

Reviewed: Feb. 10, 2009
Absolute PERFECTION... if you omit the water. I made these for my best friend's birthday potluck, and she called two days later asking for the recipe because she and her family were craving them again!

Blonde Brownies I

Reviewed: Feb. 10, 2009
YUMMYYYYYY! Rich and chewy and YUM YUM YUM YUM. I put chocolate chips on half of the blondies and left the other half plain. My boyfriend likes chocolate chips in almost everything, but the reason I usually make blondies is to escape the typical chocolate dessert =)

Butter Chickpea Curry

Reviewed: Feb. 10, 2009
My boyfriend said this reminded him of his favorite chickpea curry at the Indian restaurants. The only reason I'm knocking off a star is because I added a considerable amount of half-and-half so that it didn't have the consistency of mashed potato.

Sylvia's Ribs

Reviewed: Feb. 10, 2009
I'm only rating the sauce because I cooked my ribs according to the Baby Back Ribs recipe on this site. The sauce was good compared to most bottled barbecue sauces, but still not comparable to Sweet Baby Ray's. Wish I hadn't diluted out my bottle of SBR's making this sauce. Still, I would recommend this sauce if you don't have something as good as SBR's on hand.

Indian Chapati Bread

Reviewed: Feb. 10, 2009
Although traditional chapati are wheat-based, my mother's allergic to wheat, so I used all-purpose flour. These are incredibly easy to make and taste quite good. I added a pinch of coriander to the dough for a little bit of flavor. Roll these out very thin, or else they'll be a little on the chewy side!

Bake Sale Lemon Bars

Reviewed: Jan. 31, 2009
I only used 1 cup of sugar in the filling, and the bars turned out quite tasty. 1.5 cups would have been too much. I also added the zest of one lemon to the filling. Baked at 325. Other reviewers have said that there isn't enough of both the crust and the filling, and I half agree. Next time I will double the filling, but I liked the thin crust that the original recipe yielded. The only other thing to note: GREASE YOUR PAN GENEROUSLY. OVERDO IT IF YOU MUST. While my bars came out tasting good, it was disastrous trying to get it out of the pan (I had greased minimally to reduce what little fat content I could)! So go ahead and slather on the butter or spray before baking!!

Baby Back Ribs

Reviewed: Nov. 20, 2008
Holy cow. I used spareribs instead of baby back, so I cooked them for 3 hours instead of two and a half. And I rubbed them with brown sugar before marinating. These were literally falling off the bone. Mmmmmmmmmm.

Grandma's Corn Pudding

Reviewed: Nov. 20, 2008
YUMMMM. I made dinner for the parents tonight, and they kept coming back to the corn pudding. I made 5/8 the recipe (I would've halved it, but 2.5 eggs is a bit awkward), since it was just the three of us. Now, none of us are big eaters, and my parents are two tiny little Asian people (both under 120 pounds). Plus, they are usually skeptical of anything not Chinese. But they polished off this dish! It was mildly sweet, perfect. I was hoping for leftovers, but oh well.

Chicken Tikka Masala

Reviewed: Nov. 19, 2008
Yummm. As with everyone else, I cut back greatly on the salt. Used maybe 2 teaspoons total (in the marinade, left it out of the sauce). I got scared off by everyone saying it was too spicy, so I halved all the spices. Maybe next time I'll perk it back up a little =) Oh and I used half-and-half instead of heavy cream. Added a smidgen of cornstarch to make up for it.

Pumpkin Cookies I

Reviewed: Nov. 17, 2008
As mentioned by others, 'soft' is not synonymous with 'chewy'. They are a bit cake-like, but not as much as Iced Pumpkin Cookies, which to date is the highest rated 'popular' (as in, reviewed by a lot of people) pumpkin cookie on the site. I actually prefer this recipe a LOT more. I substituted dried cranberries =)

Black Bottom Cupcakes I

Reviewed: Nov. 17, 2008
DELICIOUS! I made these as mini cupcakes, with a layer of cream cheese filling between two layers of cake batter. Do NOT skimp on the filling, even if it looks like it'll be too much. And if you're pressed for time, for a new twist, use brownie mix instead of devil's food... YUMMMM.
