About this Cook
I love to cook but I prefer simple things. I can do the elaborate but the tastes of simple foods are the best.
My favorite things to cook
Beans and rice, Seafood gumbo, and hamburgers!
My favorite family cooking traditions
We let the kids help. We have a long line of letting the kids help and they are all great cooks because of it. I myself was taught many things by my grandmothers, aunts, and mother. We were never shoo'd out of the kitchen - we got to help. We do the same for the kids today and they enjoy it too.
My cooking triumphs
I pulled off a full on Thanksgiving dinner in 4 hours one time. My Dad invited all of these people over to have dinner the week before Thanksgiving and guess who he forgot to was fine. The turkey was small and the ham was small so they were done. My poor brother in law and husband made several trips to the grocery store. No one knew about the slip up except us. It was a great day!
My cooking tragedies
Why can't I remember to take the giblets out of the turkey??? More than once I have fished half cooked giblets out of half cooked turkey!

Buttermilk Pie
My great grandmother used to make these pies. My mom had the recipe and somehow I never got a copy. This pie is exactly like hers. It was delicious. It is sweet and rich so go easy on the size of the slices. I left out the nutmeg just because I don't like it but other than that I cooked it about 10 minutes longer. Thank you for sharing.

Super Moist Pumpkin Bread
I have made this over and over and it is wonderful. I leave out the flaked coconut and it is still great. Sometimes I don't have any nuts so I have left them out too and it is still fine. This is one of the best recipes for pumpkin bread I have ever found.

Chili Rick's
My chili has always been awful. I was looking for a recipe that could redeem me and this one is it. My husband asks for this chili when the temp starts dipping. Sometimes I add the full amount of chocolate and sometimes I forget to put it in. Either way he still loves it. I love the ease. One little tip is that I use my kitchen shears to cut the bacon into little strips and then cook it. Start with the bacon just semi frozen. I find it makes it much easier.
