Toad in a Hole! No animals were harmed in the making of this blog

So this is where my mom hangs out all day!! Nice place you've got here......
Let me introduce myself, it's the proper thing to do lest ya'll think my mom is responsible for this story! My name is Toad. I am the smallest (and most loved) member of the Shahan clan. They tell me I am a dog but I don't know so much about that.

I was born under a porch and don't remember much til the day I went home with my new family. And boy did I ever NOT want to go. This lady eventually discovered my weakness for salami and lured me out by dangling it just out of my reach! I soon felt the love this family had for me as they got rid of all those little fleas that covered me and my hair grew back in so nice! Did I tell you I am a natural blonde??
I got to sleep in a huge bed til I fell off. I didn't like falling too much so I decided that the pant leg of my daddy's jeans was a safe place....You should have seen the smiles on mom and dad's faces the morning they found me asleep there! All in all, life was good. I even got a big hairy brother out of the deal! His name is Ollie and he is my bestest friend. We make a good team....he's ALL bark and no bite and I have bitten 2 people (not that I'm braggin'. I got in LOTS of trouble that day. Grandma was down for a visit from Montana and she was packin'! ... Packin' heat...you don't mess with Grandma. So I bit my 5 yr. old human cousin instead. I have since learned not to bite the hands that feed me). Ollie looks handsome but I'm the smart one. He gets by on his good looks and I have to prove myself....one fine example......
When I was still real small I got so sick. Mom thought I had something called parvo and she was just beside herself with despair. I guess she had lost other dogs to it and couldn't bear to watch me getting worse. The next thing I know I am down the road beside the creek. I was scared and alone for 3 whole days but was far from dying. I think I was meant for great things because the coyotes left me alone and so did the wild hogs. Either that or I possessed an aura of fierceness even then!!
Then it happened! I could hear the feed truck. My dad drove a feed truck everyday and it was him, I just knew it was!  Out I ran, into the road where he could see me. I was barking loud as I could. I think I barked the whole way home (giving him a piece of my mind, no doubt!) Dad pulled up to the house and yelled for mom to come out. Well...she took one look at me and started crying. Not because she was happy to see me either (you'd think, huh?). She was just so sure I was sick and not long for this world that she didn't want her heart broken so soon. Dad explained everything just right I guess because I got to stay home and it wasn't long before Mom was her old self again. I was so happy. My whole world is my mom, dad, Savana and Ollie. I take good care of them. Why, I even sat with Mom everyday in her recliner after she had surgery on her foot. She would tell me all her troubles and I just somehow made it all better just by being there. To this day, the only time I get on the furniture is if Mom lets me. Otherwise, I'm not aloud up there. When I say 'up there' I really mean that, too. I'm all grown up and still low to the ground!  Must be some of that quarters worth of weenie dog in me. My biological mom was a half weenie dog and half chihuahua. My biological dad was a red healer. I guess it's safe to say my mom was aloud on the sofa, unlike myself, LOL!! Wanna see my.....ears??!!!!!  Nope not gonna let ya'

Well, I think I hear my Mom coming back in, gotta go...I'm not aloud on the computer either!!

Aww, thanks y'all! Toad has been an excellent addition to our family. He definitely thinks he's a big dog! We nicknamed him 'double-wide' because when he's being fiercely protective I swear he gets wider in the chest, LOL, trying to make himself look large and in charge!!

About Me
Small town Oklahoma is my home but I've been all over the place. Love to cook but I've been stuck in a rut lately.
My favorite things to cook
I make a mean spaghetti sauce, before my husband met me he wouldn't eat spaghetti. The first time I made it for him he had 3 plates full! Now it's a favorite. There are now a couple meatball recipes from AR that I love. I never used to like meatballs. They are Lana's Sweet and Sour Meatballs and Honey-Garlic Glazed Meatballs. I highly recommend them.
My favorite family cooking traditions
No real traditions other than I don't usually do Thanksgiving dinner. For several years now, we have gone to church for their Thanksgiving dinner. Love seeing old friends that we haven't seen since the previous year at the same dinner!
My cooking triumphs
Anything that doesn't wind up burnt is a triumph in my book....
My cooking tragedies
It is a tragedy of late that I was once so inspired in the kitchen... and now, not so much.
