I love cookware, I love kitchen gadgets -- you get the picture.  This past year or two, I have fallen in love with Greenpans (yes, the same ones they sell on HSN).  LOVE those things.  So that begs the question --- what about the rest of you? Favorite Cookware? Favorite Knife? Favorite… MORE

About this Cook
I've lived in Nebraska all my life - work a more-than-full-time job, which doesn't play well with home cooking on the weeknights, so I usually get my 'fix' over the weekend. Some people like to garden as a stress relief - I prefer to chop veggies or experiment in the kitchen. The more I experiment, the more I want to experiment - time is usually a factor though.
My favorite things to cook
Hmmm . . . comfort foods (breads, baking, casseroles, soups & stews), but love to branch out into things I haven't done. Some people migrate towards novels (and I do too on occasion), but my first pref for a book would be a new cookbook. The kitchen department is probably my favorite in almost every store. Love the FoodNetwork for new twists on things. Alton Brown methods work for me, and I love Cooks Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen are alot of my 'go-tos' I love their whole theory!
My favorite family cooking traditions
We are way into family occasions -- we celebrate everyone's birthday with dinners, Christmas, extended family Christmas etc. For birthdays, the birthday person gets to pick their own personal menu whether anyone else likes it or not (it's not their birthday). Christmas and Thanksgiving are always everyone with food assignments so it doesn't fall on any one person. Extended Christmas (with aunts, uncles, cousins) are always a 'graze fest' with appetizers from all particpants, and we drink and graze our way to the holidays. Usually if someone in my immediate family needs a pie or pastry, they look at me for some reason. My father passed away a few months ago, and this month with be the first time in about 30 years I haven't made him a birthday pie. Now in later years, I seem to be taking over Thanksgiving for my immediate family, and perhaps a new tradition of Fourth of July celebration for aunts, uncles, cousins, and immediate family.
My cooking triumphs
Everything I don't scortch, burn, drop on the floor, or miss ingredients I consider a triumph! My best ones are the experiments that come out as keepers!
My cooking tragedies
My sister once asked for a double chocolate 'anything' for her birthday dessert. I decided I'd try my hand at a filled cake roll. Turns out I'm a bit cake roll challenged. Cracked and caved during the roll/unroll/reroll process. Tasted fabulous, and while I tried to disguise it well with molten fudge topping, it pretty much looked like a pickup had backed over it. Live and learn. On a secondary note, are you aware that you can actually set wontons aflame in your microwave when you are trying to reheat them? Another learning . . .

Roast Sticky Chicken-Rotisserie Style
I love this spice mixture! It has become my go-to spice, particularly for poultry, ever since I found this recipe. I make up a whole jar of it and just keep it in my spice cupboard :)

Orzo with Parmesan and Basil
I found it really tasty! I'm a big fan of the flavor of browned butter, so toasting the orzo in the butter prior to reconstituting it really made this dish in my opinion. I made the recipe exactly as written - I would definitely make this again!!

Black Beans with Bacon
What a great multi-purpose recipe!!! While I have a pressure cooker, I opted to make these in the crock pot today, taking some others advice about some shortcuts. I used 2 cans of black beans, one can of petite diced tomatoes (drained), and I sauted the onion, carrot and garlic in a little of the bacon grease. I added a few drops of Louisiana hot sauce, and a drop of liquid smoke, in addition to about 1/4 tsp of ancho chili powder, and a little Arizona Dreaming spice from Penzey's. It smells and tastes wonderful! I could easily add a little chicken and cheese and make this into a burrito, or just roll this into a tortilla by itself. I'm actually considering eating some of it with chips this afternoon. And that's all above just being a wonderful side dish with something else. A very worthwhile dish!! Additional sidenote - if you have the time, the depth of flavor is fabulous if you cook in cast iron rather than the crock pot -- probably closer to that of the pressure cooker version. Still probably one of my favorite recipes this year!
