I am 20 years old and an enrolled member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. I have been happily married to my highschool sweetheart for two years and we are expecting our first child in November. His name will be Hunter Braydon. I am currently attending college for Business Administration.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook Native American cuisine. It is a way of preserving my culture. I cook frybread (also called indian tacos), mountain trout, chestnut bread, and wild game such as deer, bear, rabbit, ect. I also love to smoke meats and grill. I love to cook desserts when I have the time. I mostly bake around the holidays.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I love to make cherokee dishes the authentic way my great grandmother did like wrapping cornmeal and chestnuts in corn husks and slowly cooking them in a hole in the ground covered with coals. My husband loves to hunt and I like to prepare the meat he brings home.
My cooking triumphs
I was able to make my grandmother's special pumpkin pie. I thought it would not taste nearly as good as she made it, but I did very well. It wasn't just like grandma's, but as close as possible.
My cooking tragedies
I am unable to make biscuits like my mother and grandmother. No matter how much I try, they just are not right!
