This is a great starter recipe! Clearly people that think it's bland don't really cook all that much. You need to be to flavor to taste. Some like a thicker soup (like me)....so I added a little more flour. If you like it thinner then add some stock or water...you have to be able to play a little. I of course sauteed the onions with garlic and little butter and olive oil before throwing the ham and potatoes in...the flavors really blend well by sauteeing for a few minutes. Then just do your thing.
