Aloha Oe, Aloha Oe, Until We meet again........

Warmest Aloha All! It is getting close! Only 85 days until the Maui roundup. I am inviting one and all to meet us in Lahaina in West Maui on October 17, 2013. I hope you are planning on attending and saving your pennies for this Allrecipeeps gathering. So far, we have about 20 folks who have committed and we hope to have more. (Word has it that there might be a few from the Allrecipes headquarters too)

This is the shoulder season for Maui travel, so air, cars and accommodations should be more favorable. You can fly in and out whatever dates work for you, but the official date for the big gathering is Thursday Oct 17, 2013.

I know this is NOT a cheap trip, but I am trying to offer as much money pinching strategies as I possibly can. I will be staying at the Papakea resort at Kaanapali in a condo and I think this would be a great property to accommodate all the peeps. They have studio, one, two and three bedroom units at all price points. My girlfriend has quite a few units that she manages, so below, you will find a link to my old condo and if you scroll down that page, click on "see all my listings". She has quite a few and if you tell her that you are with Allrecipes/Julie and Miranda will  offer a discount.

Beyond any sightseeing, we plan to do some communal cooking and just plain hanging out together. I know that many will be sharing condos to cut the cost of this trip even further. Many of us will also be sharing car rentals to bring the transportation cost down and have fun exploring the island together.

I suggest that you start researching the airlines that might bring you to Maui (airport code OGG) from your area and if you want to save slowly, buy your favored airline's gift certs so that you can be saving toward the cost of the trip every week or month. Make sure you let your family know so maybe someone will surprise you with a few bucks for your birthday or a special occasion to help you make this fun trip. You will be surprised at how fast you can realize that ticket. You might also consider sharing a condo with another peep. I am sure there will be an opportunity for most folks to share if they want to.

A hui hou kakou! (until we meet again) Warmest aloha, Julie aka mauigirl

Jul. 25, 2013 2:19 pm
Mother Ann, Patty Cakes said the same about not being able to vacation in October. She works for the school district and they would consider the summer break as her most recent vacation, darn it! I like Julie's suggestion - call in sick, you two!

Jul. 25, 2013 2:22 pm
Cathy Meyers, I was wondering if Randy can concoct a new signature drink for the Maui roundup. Mai tais anyone????? :)

Jul. 25, 2013 2:23 pm

Jul. 26, 2013 8:32 am
I can relate to all the curve-balls everyone is mentioning above. I have been dodging those suckers for the past year. It's been hit and miss for several months BUT, I AM BOUND AND DETERMINED TO MAKE THIS TRIP! It has become a personal challenge for me to make this happen and I guess I won't believe it until I'm on the plane! Does anybody have a grass skirt I can borrow?? ;D

Jul. 26, 2013 8:36 am
Someone needs to alert the MEDIA in Maui, because I can't even remotely think of a PR Campaign for the Hawaiian Islands that could top a group of people arriving from all across the United States to spend their vacation in Paradise for the love of food! Whoever said "Food Brings People Together" knew what they were talking about. What a wonderful time will be had. Just a few short months away too!

Jul. 26, 2013 8:37 am
Hi Mi, LOL! You're so dang funny! I miss you..... :(

Jul. 26, 2013 9:48 am
Hey Candice! I miss you too, girl! Come to Maui!

Jul. 26, 2013 10:02 am
Oh My Gosh!!! I'm excited too. Even though I can't go, I'll be wearing a grass skirt and drinking fruity "happy" drinks. Love you all, have a blast and take pictures to share with us. XOXOXO

Jul. 26, 2013 11:08 am

kokua-- north shore 'oahu speaking here. it sounds like fun- know maui well. there are some very affordable vac rentals down near kihei, and especially ma'alea.

Jul. 29, 2013 7:26 am
rebeccaz, We would LOVE to meet you. Mostly it is just an escape for some Allrecipeeps. I will be showing them around the island so much of their trip will be exploring with me. We will be having a party to gather officially on Thursday Oct 17th at the Papakea resort. I am not encouraging the attendees to stay in the Kihei area because I will be doing alot of the transportation and I will be based in Lahaina/Kaanapali. Kihei would make that very difficult for me. Please click on the facebook link above and ask to join the private group so you can see what we are up to. Royall is coming over from Big Island too! Come on over kid!!!!!

I am checking airfares...SERIOUSLY thinking about this trip. I so want to go!!!

Jul. 30, 2013 10:31 am
Aloha ! It would be a great way to celbrate my beautiful wife's birthday but unfortunately it falls right in the middle of the school year and with 3 kids, we can't make it. I hope you all have fun and I hope to see you when all 5 of us come back sometime soon.

Jul. 30, 2013 12:28 pm
I love the islands, even though I've only been there once. Paradise isn't cheap, but it will be so much fun for those who are going. I'm really looking forward to your blogs regarding the roundup!

Jul. 30, 2013 8:42 pm

Doug Matthews, There is such a thing as sitters. Come over and celebrate with us. I am sure those kids will not have a risky business event in your absence.

Jul. 30, 2013 8:45 pm
Doc SImonson, LIFE IS VERY SHORT! Come on over and bring your sweetie!

Jul. 31, 2013 4:35 am
Remember the big party dog fish head and I were going to have "some day?" Well, she's dead and buried now and I was too late to the party b one lousy day. Be responsible, but try to live life to the fullest.

Jul. 31, 2013 8:12 am
You are so right midwestchef. I am losing a lifetime friend to cancer on Big Island right now and we always had plans to do something together SOON. Soon is too late.

Jul. 31, 2013 5:40 pm
I was hoping the "outside chance" would happen and we would be able to make it. That kitchen project has been set back a couple of times and that has knocked out any chance we can do it. :~( We'll be looking out for those many accounts that will illustrate your wonderful adventures!

Jul. 31, 2013 8:11 pm
Mike Harvey, It really won't be the same without you two :(

You are meeting the day before my birthday. Wow would that ever be a great birthday present. However it won't be possible for me to come. I have been to Maui and it is the most beautiful place on earth that I have yet seen anyway. I will be thinking about all of you during that time. As others have said send all the pictures possible.

Aug. 2, 2013 4:30 pm
Char, I love Maui too. There must be prettier places on earth, but I haven't been seen them yet. We would love to finally meet you. You have been a real gem on the buzz :)

I just found this post. Can't believe it's going to take place when, as luck would have it, I'll be on Maui!! What are the thenodds??! We're staying in Kihei, however. Is there a place where I can read up on the events?

Aug. 18, 2013 7:56 pm

About Me
I have been married for 43 years to the most amazing man on the planet. He is quiet and deliberate and I am NOT. We have one grown son (and his partner) that we adore. Because they work for the airlines they drop in on a flight frequently and we feel so lucky for that. We retired after 30 years at our careers from our native Olympia to Maui and now most recently retreated to Las Vegas to try to ride out this horrendous economy. We bought a small home here and I gutted it and am putting it back together, so I spend most of my time fine tuning the decorating and now I am plunging into a full tropical landscaping to remind us of our beautiful Maui. I miss the PNW, but NOT the weather. Miss the razor clams and the wild beaches of Washington and Oregon. Miss my friends too. Happy to have my friends from Allrecipes though. The four legged critter you see on my profile is a five year old yorkie/bichon who is the greatest little (9 lbs) girl ever. Quiet and calm, but so excited about life.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook just about anything...just mostly like the art of cooking and baking and sharing my art with friends and families. Love the smells that emanate from my kitchen and the familiar memories that come flooding back. The scents from my kitchen are probably my favorite thing in the house.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother used to like to make a big deal out of almost any holiday, so I have followed through with that tradition. Valentine's Day, Christmas, St. Paddy's day, Thanksgiving, Easter, Oscar night are just a few of my favorite cooking traditions. Birthday parties for all my loved ones are something I love to do too.
My cooking triumphs
The first time I mastered sauce bearnaise, or raviolis from scratch or my first perfect cheesecake or my first wedding catering job or meeting Julia Child (about 25 years ago).
My cooking tragedies
(See above) Well....Julia was so cranky and rude it ruined my love of her.....so I sold all my Julia Child cookbooks (some of them signed) at a garage sale for $1.00 apiece. Now I wish I would have kept them of course. I guess Julia was just having a bad day:( & I was foolish of course.
