Sep. 29, 2010 11:19 am
What would be doing in Vegas? Just curious because we don't gamble or anything.

May is graduation month for my only child so even if I WANTED to take a vacation(and I do need one!) to Vegas.... I don't suppose you'd like to come to the absolute middle of the Midwest, say about my BD time(end of July, first of Aug.)? :)Pick up a West coaster or two along the way, maybe someone that has a BD about the same time...

de'Monfort, I'm hoping to go and though I do uh, like the slots, (evil vile things) if I'm going to Vegas, besides looking forward to an AR meet, up I am for sure planning on a visit to Hoover Dam. Vegas is in a beautiful part of the country so I may rent a car too sight see or just take a tour (probably safer if I don't drive) but there are other things to do for sure!!

Sep. 29, 2010 12:29 pm
I am (tentatively) in =D And SO excited!!!!!! I need to check because my "baby" is graduating - but I don't think there will be a conflict. For anyone in the So Cal area - we can set up a car pool . . . .

Sep. 29, 2010 12:32 pm
de'Monfort - there are shows, and the only other time I went (a gazillion years ago!!!) I actually did this: http://www.vegasindoorskydiving.com/ AND, we can EAT =D

Sep. 29, 2010 12:53 pm
wow. . . would I love to come!!! There's a ton to do in Las Vegas de. I would like to camp on Lake Mead. I don't know that it will be possible, but it's on my wish list :)

Sep. 29, 2010 12:57 pm
I just talked to Mauigirl and 5/7 is Mother's day weekend - she is moving the date to May 14, 2011

Sep. 29, 2010 1:04 pm
LS - SO hope you can make it!!!!!

Sep. 29, 2010 1:05 pm
That makes it easer, Ba'Nana! Now I don't have to feel like a lousy daughter (= Still have to check on the whole graduation thing - but seriously don't think it will be an issue . . .

Sep. 29, 2010 4:08 pm
Wow this sounds exciting....and plenty of time to save up a few bucks to go. I've never been to Vegas...i am going to Phoenix sometime next year...hmmmmm

Sep. 29, 2010 4:09 pm
You already know, barring any major natural disasters ie: Mt. St. Helens erupting, etc. that Bob and I will be there! Margaritas poolside, baby!

Sep. 29, 2010 4:16 pm
Maui, it would help to know where you lived, so we could arrange for a block of rooms somewhere.. saving money as well as the convenience factor. Ladies, there are tons of things to do in Vegas.. if you like to shop, there are the Cesar Shops or the Venetian shops, there are shows and comedy acts. As for restaurants, there are TONS of good ones and not all of them are attached to hotels. There are great buffets - the Paris has one of the better ones.

Sep. 29, 2010 4:21 pm
There is also a shuttle down the strip that you can board for free and it takes you from one end of the strip to the other - a good way to see all the big hotels and their outdoor shows - like the Pirate show at Treasure Island or the water fountain show at the Bellagio. There is even a laser light show in downtown Vegas - all for free. There is golf, swimming, helicopter flips over the Grand Canyon, we can all pitch in on a huge Limo and we can take rides all throughout the strip and in Vegas. There are museums and displays.. like the Titanic display, and even animal shows. What CAN'T you do in Vegas is more like it!!

Sep. 29, 2010 5:35 pm
BellesAZ I live in Summerlin near Red Rock State Park which is the west side of the city.(a 15-20 minute drive from the strip and about a 10 to 15 minute drive to downtown. I will figure out the logistics of getting everyone one out here as we get a better handle on how many might show up. If I have to rent a shuttle bus...I will:)

Sep. 29, 2010 5:36 pm
D'Monfort- My goodness kid...there is so much more than gambling here. We RARELY gamble and it's pennies when we do :) It really is an exciting city to visit. Hope you can make it.

Sep. 29, 2010 8:12 pm
helzbelz I hope you make it here. WW I would come up and kick your rear end all the way down here if you didn't show up. Those So Cal ladies want to meet you!

Sep. 29, 2010 8:16 pm
BellesAZ The closest hotel/casinos to me are the Red Rock Resort & Spa, SunCoast and the Rampart. The big problem is that they are inconvenient for folks who want to explore the strip or downtown. As we get a better grasp on this, I will figure out a way to get everyone out to my neighborhood. With this group....everything is possible :)

Sep. 29, 2010 9:51 pm
Well this looks like a tentative negative. Dang. It's college graduation weekend up here and also College softball world series tournament time. Not to count our chickens before they are hatched or anything, but we are a favorite this year to go on and play deep. I would love to come for that great time, but for right now, I can't commit. I do love Vegas though...so I might be tempted.

Sep. 30, 2010 8:32 am
Avon.....you will be missing a bunch of great people if you don't make it to LV :) Come on down!

Sep. 30, 2010 6:49 pm
Well, I was hoping to come and meet some of you, but now I won't be able to. I'm bummed.

Sep. 30, 2010 7:27 pm

Its on the calendar! My fiance just laughed when I told him the reason for going. He asked if he would actually have to go to the get together (hes a little shy) and I said NO but plan on spending the better part of the day by yourself! ha ha ha ha Hey maybe we can get married while we're there! Just kidding...my mom would kill me! Barring any unforseen issues with wedding planning I will be there! Thank you Mauigirl...not only for being a doll but carrying on this new AR tradition!

K-Dub what a fun year you are going to have. I don't know how you have the energy. There are a lot of things to entertain your beloved here in Vegas. Viva Las Vegas!

Just wanted to say that I have been talking Very early in the morning 3ish, when Honey gets home and he is not saying No. I say we could drive to Laughlin and then drive into Vegas on Saturday. He says we could just Drive to Vegas and does a shrug.Hope you all have a great weekend. Love, Patty

Oct. 1, 2010 9:21 pm
Sorry, had another thought. I was in the shower and was wondering how/what we would eat? I know it's way too early to ask, this just thought I would ask anywho. We could all chip in from a restaurant maybe. IDK {Shrugging}Well, thanks for listening to me Mauigirl.

Oct. 2, 2010 7:31 am
Like Cat Hill suggested, I was thinking I would just barbecue or maybe a couple of slow cooker kalua pigs. If I could get a few of my Cal friends to bring salads, breads or desserts, I think we would have it solved. Witchy Woman will be here to help me too so the two of us can get a head start. What do you think?

Oct. 2, 2010 7:32 am
Sorry that was for Patty Cakes, but if anyone else has some ideas, I am all ears. TIA

Oct. 2, 2010 7:44 am
PattyCakes, Why not a Hawaiian themed menu since it is my other home?????

Oct. 2, 2010 5:36 pm
Oh Julie, I think the Hawaiian theme would be terrific! I will bring a dish too! I'll run by the store and assemble it at your house! B/C I also got a definite/confirmed YES!!! We can GO!!! YYYYIIPPEE

Oct. 3, 2010 7:07 pm
Yippee! Viva Las Vegas!

Oct. 3, 2010 11:29 pm
Like I told Ba'Nana, I am always good for desserts (= I've invited my best friend and my son's girl friend (=

Would love to go and see everyone, but baby #2 is due May 19 and I live in NC. So that's a little too close to my due date. Have fun everyone!!! (I am getting excited thinking of all the good food that everyone is going to eat.)

Oct. 4, 2010 1:46 pm
Just reading through the comments - exciting! I know this is a ways off but I am already plotting and planning what to bring. :)

Oct. 5, 2010 1:15 am
Marking my calendar! Fingers crossed for a good summer! I need to visit the sibs in CA and could eailyt tack on a NV trip. OMG! What a goal I've set!

Oct. 5, 2010 6:01 am
mauigirl, we Midwesterners have been inspired to have a roundup! First one will be near the Kansas City area and at my house!! I'm so excited! Unfortunately ;), there will have to be several in the Midwest cause not everyone can make this one. Vacation destinations-AR Roundups!!! What fun!!!

Oct. 5, 2010 7:20 am
Good EatNZ - praying for a "great" summer season for you! I sure hope to meet you in Vegas!

Oct. 5, 2010 8:11 am
Good EatNZ...I sure hope you can make it. Viva Las Vegas!

Oct. 5, 2010 8:13 am
Cat Hill...I have been watching the midwest round up shape up. Wow, I so want to show up for that one too. With me....you never know?????

Oct. 5, 2010 10:10 am
Maui, I'm only 6 hours away. If I decide to come, I'll certainly be happy to bring what is needed as well. I didn't realize you were out in Summerlin. If I drive, I can take 4 additional passengers. If others from So Cal came, they can also take passengers. We could get a booking at a downtown hotel (far cheaper than the strip!) and we could carpool to your place for the day and then drive back that evening for a night of fun! We can do the same thing if we decide to go out to a buffet or other restaurant as a group. Best to take a cab from downtown to the strip though.. driving is a bear and parking is even worse. I just check the dates for downtown.. for some reason, that weekend is very expensive. Could be something going on.

Oct. 5, 2010 11:43 am
Wow! here's another one I could go to! However its right at graduation and my godsons confirmation....AND my anniversay...:( We need one in Phoenix!

Oct. 5, 2010 4:11 pm
ValleyGirl - BevF wanted to plan a southwest get-together...maybe we could help her get it going? We are only 7-8 hours from Phoenix. Or everyone can come to Las Cruces!

Oct. 5, 2010 4:51 pm
I'm in Phoenix too!

Oct. 5, 2010 6:11 pm
mauigirl, don't forget there will be a 50th BD party at the end of July so you might make that :)

Oct. 6, 2010 8:10 am
Cat Hill, 50 huh...I vaguely remember that age :) BTW I looked at hotel prices at the Golden Nugget if anyone was inclined to stay downtown. (the Golden Nugget is a very nice property in the downtown/Fremont street area) The weekend (fri & sat) were $109 but the weekdays leading up to or following the 14th were $59. Many may find an even better rate in a package deal depending on where they are flying from. Unless someone can come up with a killer deal right now, I would be inclined to wait till after the first of the year to find some promotions. Viva Las Vegas!

Oct. 6, 2010 11:04 am
Out of curiousity.... why May? I forgot to ask that earlier.. LOL

Oct. 6, 2010 12:22 pm
BellesAZ. May was chosen because it is far out enough for folks to save their bucks. Many will have to plan their vacation schedules well in advance also. Before I retired, I had to submit my annual vacation requests in January and I am sure there are others that have to do something like that too. I also chose May because it is past Spring Break and it is the vacation "shoulder" season. Another reason is because I have a very small house and at that time of year it should be conducive to indoor/outdoor entertaining. Hope that all makes sense:)

Oct. 6, 2010 12:23 pm
Belles I note that you folks in the southwest may soon be getting together. Great!

Oct. 6, 2010 12:35 pm
Ahhh... that makes sense. Thanks for that. I was thinking it had some special meaning in terms of a date.. like a birthday celebration or other. Umm.. I'm not aware of a SW get together, but will keep my eyes open.

About Me
I have been married for 43 years to the most amazing man on the planet. He is quiet and deliberate and I am NOT. We have one grown son (and his partner) that we adore. Because they work for the airlines they drop in on a flight frequently and we feel so lucky for that. We retired after 30 years at our careers from our native Olympia to Maui and now most recently retreated to Las Vegas to try to ride out this horrendous economy. We bought a small home here and I gutted it and am putting it back together, so I spend most of my time fine tuning the decorating and now I am plunging into a full tropical landscaping to remind us of our beautiful Maui. I miss the PNW, but NOT the weather. Miss the razor clams and the wild beaches of Washington and Oregon. Miss my friends too. Happy to have my friends from Allrecipes though. The four legged critter you see on my profile is a five year old yorkie/bichon who is the greatest little (9 lbs) girl ever. Quiet and calm, but so excited about life.
My favorite things to cook
I love to cook just about anything...just mostly like the art of cooking and baking and sharing my art with friends and families. Love the smells that emanate from my kitchen and the familiar memories that come flooding back. The scents from my kitchen are probably my favorite thing in the house.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother used to like to make a big deal out of almost any holiday, so I have followed through with that tradition. Valentine's Day, Christmas, St. Paddy's day, Thanksgiving, Easter, Oscar night are just a few of my favorite cooking traditions. Birthday parties for all my loved ones are something I love to do too.
My cooking triumphs
The first time I mastered sauce bearnaise, or raviolis from scratch or my first perfect cheesecake or my first wedding catering job or meeting Julia Child (about 25 years ago).
My cooking tragedies
(See above) Well....Julia was so cranky and rude it ruined my love of her.....so I sold all my Julia Child cookbooks (some of them signed) at a garage sale for $1.00 apiece. Now I wish I would have kept them of course. I guess Julia was just having a bad day:( & I was foolish of course.
