My name is Jill, and I'm 22. I was married young to a guy who had been raised on home cooked meals, which pretty much made me realize I need to learn how to cook some real food fast. My husband is in the Coast Guard, so right now we're living on Virginia's Eastern Shore. We're both originally from Massachusetts, just one town apart from each other. He only has one more year left in the Coast Guard, and then we get to move back home to Mass! We have two dobermans, Roxie & Max, and they are probably the brattiest, most spoiled dogs I've ever met. They are our kids with fur- and the only kids we plan on having for a long time. Last year I was laid off from my last job, and I knew I needed something to do to help the time of being unemployed pass by. So I got into making cakes... I started off pretty basic, but now I've got into designing really cool novelty type cakes. My favorite was a baby shower cake with a big pregnant belly! I'm now the go-to gal for cakes in my neighborhood!
My favorite things to cook
Cakes... and any kind of dessert... baking is my favorite!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother's side of the family is Polish, and every year around Thanksgiving the women make a bunch of Pierogies and freeze them so that we can have them on Christmas Eve. My mother and my aunt head the operation- my mom rolls the dough out to the perfect flatness, and my aunt cuts the Pierogies. The both stick to their jobs because they are terrible at doing the other's job. My Grandfather always comes along too, because it was his mother who has this amazing recipe for them- and he is the official filling baller. I had always gone every year to be with my family on this Polish filled day, but it was only this past year when I actually started to help cook. So now I am an official Pierogie cutter, while my sister-in-law is the dough roller... because both of us are awful at the other job as well! Now I'm away from home for the next two years because my husband is in the Coast Guard, but I have a little cousin that gets to take my place until I get back.
My cooking triumphs
A beautiful apple pie with a criss-cross glazed crust on the top... a roasted turkey breast with the skin all browned- it looked like it could have been in a magazine!
My cooking tragedies
When I first started cooking, I found this amazing recipe for a roasted chicken that I thought would be wonderful to surprise my boyfriend (now husband) with. I followed the recipe to a T, and it said about 45 minutes so I cooked it for that long without even checking to see if the meat was thoroughly cooked. When my hubby cut into it, the meat was still bleeding... and the skin wasn't even cooked all the way.
