Grandma's Egg Custard Pie

Reviewed: Aug. 16, 2008
Not impressed. I've attempted this pie twice now, and been disappointed each time. The taste is good, but the texture is terrible - runny and lumpy (yes, I did temper the eggs and the hot milk). I won't be making this again.

Apple Pie by Grandma Ople

Reviewed: Sep. 22, 2007
My boyfriend, a picky eater, proclaimed this the best apple pie he'd ever tasted. I substituted apple cider for the water and added about a teaspoon of apple pie spice. I was worried the caramel would make the pie too sweet, but it was perfect - creamy and mild, with all the apple flavor coming through. I'm making it again for a family party this weekend!

Charlotte's Tortellini Salad

Reviewed: Jul. 9, 2004
Awesome! This is a huge favorite with my family. I make it either as a main dish or omit the chicken to make a side dish. The lemon favor is very unusual, and makes for a great summery pasta salad.

Berry Trifle

Reviewed: Jul. 9, 2004
Delicious! Not at all mushy or runny. The custard firmed up nicely, and the whole dish had a sweet, fruity flavor - not heavy or overpowering. I used a mix of fresh and frozen fruit. I also had to double the recipe to fill my trifle dish. I'll definitely make this one again!

Queijadas

Reviewed: May 29, 2004
Absolutely delicious! I ate four of these before I could stop myself. I used margarine instead of butter and it didn't seem to hurt it; next time I'll try 1% milk, too - and maybe some lemon extract. These are a very sweet, baked custard - cakey on the outside, creamy in the middle. To get mine out of the pan I let them cool completely, then used a butter knife around the edges and almost peeled them out of the cups. I will definitely make these again!

Pistachio Cream Cheese Fingers

Reviewed: Jan. 4, 2004
The only issue I have with this recipe is that it didn't make nearly enough! There's no way you could get 96 cookies out of this unless they were the size of tic-tacs. I made about 40 1-inch cookies, and they were great! Moist, dense, delicately flavored with cream cheese and pistachio. I love the idea of using pudding mix, how easy!

Irresistible Irish Soda Bread

Reviewed: Mar. 22, 2003
While not technically "The" Irish Soda bread, this bread is actually very tasty! It's much moister and less dense than traditional soda bread, more like a quick bread texture. But the taste is the same, and some people I gave it to enjoyed the moister version better. Hint: If you don't have buttermilk, you can sour regular milk with 1 tbsp. lemon juice per cup of milk.

Cinnamon Hazelnut Biscotti

Reviewed: Dec. 20, 2002
Yummm! I wanted something new and different with my traditional Christmas cookies this year... stumbled across this one and gave it a shot. So far, three people from the office have asked for a recipe! The cinnamon flavor is just right. I stored them in the fridge with the rest of my cookies and they got a little softer, next batch I will leave at room temp and see if it helps them stay crisp.

Carrot-Oatmeal Spice Cake

Reviewed: Apr. 6, 2001
Very good! The only thing I would suggest is if there's a version that uses real eggs and real sugar - I tried to sweeten to taste using brown sugar instead of artificial sweetener (blech!) and the cake came out somewhat flat, but very rich. (3/4 c. brown sugar, if anyone else wants to try.) Worth experimenting with.
