Is that a FLY in the soup?

I have no idea just what's going on these days, but not only is the economy screwed up big time, but think about the weather!  Phoenix had a hi of 95 today (Tues,) while Chicago hit 102!  Then add the darn humidity there... am I ever glad that I left Michigan so many years ago!

Anyway, I don't care if I'm out watering my patio plants, cooking a meal, or relaxing... there has been a plague of house flies of late!  In fact, I just found one floating in my beverage!  How gross is that?  It seems that the darn things are breeding inside...

For some inexplicable reason, of late I've been craving APPETIZERS...  I don't know why, but I fear that I'd just as soon make a dinner meal of "starters" as the British call them or used to.  Wontons, cheese spread or cheese ball, nachos, veggies & dip...  What a grand idea for tomorrow's meal!  Fried mushrooms, zuchinni and mozzerella sticks!  Cocktail meatballs or sausages and a fruit platter!  I surely must be having some sort of "meltdown," but I don't call myself "crazycook" for no reason!

So, be healthy, be happy, be crazy...

Aaawe, Stevie, I'm sorry you left MI. Played golf in the morning and was out on the boat the rest of the day through sunset! Gorgeous day!! Hopefully the little critter didn't drink too much!!

I have been making appetizers for meals, also. The quantities and flavors suit the weather and they are quick to fix. I've noticed some big ones this spring. I saw one and knew I was in trouble because it was eating the fly swatter! Another one was fighting with a Turkey Vulture for food!

Good morning Stevie. This past weekend we had a BBQ birthday party - the door was open and shut all day long. When the guests had all gone home I realized that we had a whole host of flies that had moved in. :/ I have been hunting and swatting like a crazy woman.

HI, Stevie! I believe your avatar shows the fires glow? Are you near the fires? It's a miracle San Antonio hasn't gone up in smoke, it's so dry and hot here!

Hey all, I'll try to say a few words to each! Mickdee, I DO NOT regret leaving MI... I could have bought dad's house "share" from sis... been a desert rat since 1980 and have NO intention of ever leaving - by choice, anyway! Mike, don't fret... I shifted gears with you! Didn't think that appetizers were eating the fly swatter! lol! Nana, J keeps running around with a can of bug spray... omg! I'd sooner live with the BUGS! Bibi, sorry luv but the pic is of a sunset of some time ago! No fear of the fires, I'm in Phoenix... hate to hear of folk having to evacuate tho'! Remember only the River Walk while passing thru your neck of the woods... Thanks all! Love to hear from you! Stay crazy!

About Me
Started cooking many years ago, and learned as I went. First meal may have been "steak & chips" at age 15, in Birmingham England, where I lived for several years. Mostly grew up in MI, transplanted to the desert 30yrs ago, or so. Favorite cookbook is "Better Homes", also enjoy "Great British Cooking, a well kept secret." Hesitate to call myself "expert," but friends do rave...
My favorite things to cook
Italian has been my "specialty" for some time, and my "signature" meal is Lasagne, salad, garlic bread, which I first made 20yrs ago... from SCRATCH, very first time I made it. (Never again, folks...) Now start with a big jar of sauce!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanks to my heritage, I have enjoyed trying foods from different cultures. We still have beer battered fish, and chips of course; ground meat dishes often, chicken occasionally, pork too. I would love to submit a bean dip recipe, however, my ex who gave me the original has passed, and I have no way to verify that it didn't come from another source! I also enjoy British cooking (with a few yankee twists) and once made Plum puddings, also known as Christmas puddings, as far as I know... what an ordeal that was, but well worth the effort. Today, there is mail order!
My cooking triumphs
Greatest triumph was not too long ago, when I held a sit down dinner for 12, Lasagne being the entree. It was a fund raiser I chose to sponsor, and am proud to say that "we" raised over $1000 from that meal alone, minimum donation being $25. All proceeds collected were donated; my partner and I provided the meal and beverages.
My cooking tragedies
MEATLOAF of all things! Went through a stage of "winging" it each time, and I pulled one after another out of the oven that were almost unedible. As yet, not too big on baking... no sweet tooth here! Have dabbled, but find doughs/pastries especially difficult, perhaps as it's 90 degrees in my kitchen much of the year.
