Yesterday's "food section" of the paper had a recipe/article that caught my eye.  Forgive me that I've forgotten the name of the local chef who supplied the recipe, but what's more important is that I was introduced to "Panzanella."  I just happened to have about a quarter loaf of crusty… MORE

It's been over the past few months that I finally sat down at this infernal laptop, and began oh so many hours of research, which resulted in me joining ancestry.com.  The info I've discovered is truly fascinating - considering that my knowledge of "family" included less than 20 people (which… MORE

How often have I said that, over the years?  About a gazillion, probably... I was a really picky eater as a kid/young adult!  It all began innocently enough, when I bought my first pepper mill, and I decided that I do indeed like black pepper - IF is coursely ground. I guess it was before… MORE

No, I've not been out of the country for an extended trip, just been busy around the house, (crazy)cookin' up a storm, and frankly, have had little that I felt worth sharing... until now, that is. I'd not prepared any Asian food for some time, but found myself at a Chinese restaurant last… MORE

Could I remember, I'd spend the next hour sharing the adventures of crazycook's past month or so, but alas, cooking has become such an integral part of daily life, that I honestly can't recall just what I prepared, or when!  I find leftovers in the frige, and ask myself, "when did I make… MORE

At the tail end of my last post, I mentioned that I had an abundance of bananas. Perhaps 10lbs worth... Denise, bless her heart, had been out to fav "famers market" while visiting her mom, and brought home a banana box FULL of nanner's, for - get this...  $1.    No, that is NOT a typo! … MORE

It was about a month ago that I read (somewhere) that sweetened condensed milk can easily be made into caramel sauce.  Having a bit of free time one afternoon, I decided to put this to the test, so I began searching for the directions...  After about 30 mins, I still came up empty, and… MORE

I began canning  my own "baked beans" some time ago, and got to wondering one afternoon if I could can my own refrieds...  I spent some time researching this thought, and ran into many warnings, that "most often" jars of refrieds explode in the pressure canner.  After some diligent searching,… MORE

Where has this month gone?  The days seem to fly by, weekends come and go...  Have I been "cookin' crazy?"  YES!  I've also been painting the siding on the house that was replaced a few years ago and primed, but never given a top coat - I promised myself that it would be done before the… MORE

Today has been what I consider a more "normal" February day...  I awoke to a heavy downpour, short lived though it was, but just a few short days ago it had been sunny and 70+ degrees...  It has remained mostly cloudy, and has showered a few times today, some badly needed rain!  I recall… MORE

About Me
Started cooking many years ago, and learned as I went. First meal may have been "steak & chips" at age 15, in Birmingham England, where I lived for several years. Mostly grew up in MI, transplanted to the desert 30yrs ago, or so. Favorite cookbook is "Better Homes", also enjoy "Great British Cooking, a well kept secret." Hesitate to call myself "expert," but friends do rave...
My favorite things to cook
Italian has been my "specialty" for some time, and my "signature" meal is Lasagne, salad, garlic bread, which I first made 20yrs ago... from SCRATCH, very first time I made it. (Never again, folks...) Now start with a big jar of sauce!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanks to my heritage, I have enjoyed trying foods from different cultures. We still have beer battered fish, and chips of course; ground meat dishes often, chicken occasionally, pork too. I would love to submit a bean dip recipe, however, my ex who gave me the original has passed, and I have no way to verify that it didn't come from another source! I also enjoy British cooking (with a few yankee twists) and once made Plum puddings, also known as Christmas puddings, as far as I know... what an ordeal that was, but well worth the effort. Today, there is mail order!
My cooking triumphs
Greatest triumph was not too long ago, when I held a sit down dinner for 12, Lasagne being the entree. It was a fund raiser I chose to sponsor, and am proud to say that "we" raised over $1000 from that meal alone, minimum donation being $25. All proceeds collected were donated; my partner and I provided the meal and beverages.
My cooking tragedies
MEATLOAF of all things! Went through a stage of "winging" it each time, and I pulled one after another out of the oven that were almost unedible. As yet, not too big on baking... no sweet tooth here! Have dabbled, but find doughs/pastries especially difficult, perhaps as it's 90 degrees in my kitchen much of the year.
