we had our daughters, moose and gater. we also had some of their buddies spend the holidays with us, some neighbors as well. the majority of us went to the 6 pm mass. mother in law held court after mass speaking in very eloquent terms of medical procedures that had been inflicted on her and various family members. one of her capitvated court offered to show me the scar. I declined. we finally made it back to the pick-up truck and with the parking lot VERY empty left for home. I started a silly thing some years ago, it involves finding the crudest, cheapest, most tacky, inappropriate gag gift to be found to give. I turn on " it's a wonderful life." we open many alcoholic beverages... then the "gift" giving begins. this is a serious competition ! I got a broken accordian 3 years ago, the moose has received a real stuffed squirrel holding a beer can,  the wife has received real clown shoes...well you get the picture. this year...gifts received, ( well the "good" ones)... mother in law received a 4 foot pink dirty flea-bit stuffing-losing teddy bear. when I ask my daughters what they want for any occasion they always say a pony. yes...they both got ponies this year, one another terrific flea market fat pony find and the other pony just the pony head on a broom stick. such joy! oh and gater also received from a buddy one of those very tacky unicorns ( icey blue of course) frozen in time standing on it's hind legs. my moose has brought rain with her gifts though.. this year she "gifted" her sister with a what I think is a candy jar...it kinda looks like an older woman with wire rimmed glasses and a straw hat with green chocolate ande bars taped to her cheeks and loaded in the belly. the gater one-upped her with a 50's ant farm for her mother. the moose's cat is " special." it is in search of a diet, has very short legs, tail, flat face and is Siamese. it has trouble reaching anything that could benefit from a good washing.so being as thoughtful as I am, I bought her an electric baby wipe warmer  neither her nor her cat appreciated it. just can't please some folks. the neighbors then started their bar b que in nasty cold weather. we truly laughed until 3 in the morning. I hope ya had a safe and happy holiday with the folks you most wanted around you! happy holidays all!!

Next year - I'm coming to your house!! The taxidermist had a goin-out-of-business sale and I got a deal on a snarlin possum, dirt diggin armadillo, a treed racoon, and one rompin stompin gator - - all comin to your house Gary - - which would you like your name on?

Dec. 26, 2013 6:42 pm
hi ma! I forgot to mention that I got armadillo scram. yeah, I don't know what it is either. but some critter has been eating the collards...so the scram may work out after all.

Dec. 26, 2013 6:46 pm
hi love! well you are certainly welcome anytime here! I'm thinking that possum on the half-shell.we can season it with the left-over dillo scram :)

I wish I knew how to cut and paste. my daughter have the ability. i'll get them to do it later in the week. ya really should think about trying this silly "gift- giving" thing. you will laugh all evening, and can look forward to the real stuff Christmas morning. so much fun! it's the highlight of the holidays for us. somebody, for example, will mention my reaction after tearing thru a large wrapped box only to find an accordion. priceless. let's just say...ok, don't say what I did... nevermind lol!

I think your "silly" Christmas Eve tradition is priceless - - it's the memories that are forever and will live on long after the gifts are gone - I love it and I'm going to talk to my sister about doing the same - - ROCK ON GARY!!!

Gary, I love the gift giving your family has. Our family has a gift exchange where you can steal the gift from someone else. It is fun, and someone always brings some goofy gifts such as a leg lamp, an ugly Christmas pig cookie jar, and some elf ears. We had to make a new rule you can't take home your own gift-crazy as it seems some people would choose their own gift.

I love the idea of really bad gag gifts! We may have to adopt that for future yuletide gifts. :) Happy New Year to you and your family.

I can't stop laughing to type hardly! What a great Christmas you it sounds like you had! I can just imagine the thought that went into the crazy gifts! Love the squirrel with a beer can. In FFA, my son got to taxidermy a squirrel. He tried to make it hold a gun (it was one of those lighters). Child wanted to put it on the mantel. Uh no, Mom vetoed that idea! I hope you and yours have a very Happy New Year!

hi bibi! we were trying to embarrass each other...the misses were as funny as the hits!

Dec. 27, 2013 5:47 pm
hi lela! I actually bought the then girlfriend/ future wife a deer leg lamp. she never appreciated it. fun, silly, tacky gifts are a given in my family. heck, we are southern rednecks. dirty santa is not allowed here though...you are stuck with what you were gifted with :) funny that folks would want their nasty gift back at ya's celebration, I usually get stuck taking the "gifts" to goodwill.

hi sweet pee! after church or brfore on Christmas eve, there is really not a lot to do. some folks make cookies I guess, decorate gingerbread houses, deliver gifts, watch the favorite Christmas movie, etc. I like to make it funny. everyone seems to smile more broadly when santa actually delivers the REAL stuff.

Dec. 27, 2013 7:22 pm
Sounds like a great tradition! And now you have a whole year to find gifts for next year. Love it! Happy hunting.

Dec. 27, 2013 9:01 pm
hi cat! this is a serious completion. we call each other to let the other know a truly excellent " gift " was found. it keeps the far-flung family in touch. I actually received a live mounted squirrel holding a toy shotgun 2 years ago.yep, right on the fireplace mantle it went. tell your son that practice makes perfect!

Dec. 27, 2013 9:02 pm
hi peggy! that's the joy of the giving...having another 361 days to find something totally silly!

Love your crazy gift idea! Your household must be a hoot at Christmas. Unfortunately, my MIL has been playing the useless gift idea for a few years now. I have quite a few things I've never removed from the box. This year it was this giant heavy Thomas Kincade, or whoever he is, wreath that lights up. It weighs a ton and you can't really hang it on a door or anything! Oh, well, she's still the best MIL! I told her I loved it so I guess the useless gifts will keep coming! I really enjoyed your blog. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Gary! That sounds like a fun tradition. I remember you talking about the clown shoes but I thought that was just one kookie gift. Those memories will be repeated to grand children and great grands for years.

You should make a video & put it on "you tube" - I bet it'd go viral! I know I'd watch it several times - even just reading this is great! I hope your New Year is just as HaPpY!

You are truly funny, thanks for the laughs. Have a great New year.

Dec. 28, 2013 4:30 pm
hi Godzilla! yep, I understand the ma n law "gifts." I took her to a goodwill and she was showing me stuff that could be considered gag gifts...but she was serious. kinda scary.

Dec. 28, 2013 4:35 pm
hi bsm! yep, we've been doing this for awhile now. it's truly a serious activity now. i''l get a call from one of the rugrats in march explaining that they had found the perfect gag gift...so I know I gotta dig deeper into the vile depths of the under-belly of under-appreciative gifts.

Dec. 28, 2013 4:38 pm
hi scooter! the daughter have plenty of pictures. I need them to post the silly stuff!

Dec. 28, 2013 5:19 pm
hi manny! I hate mirrors. if you think I'm funny you ought to see how I look. I always have to use a drive-thru so as not to scare children.

Fun read Gary, love your gift exchange. So much more fun than a box of chocolates that go to work the next day. Hey, I had those in-laws that relayed every procedure and affliction in fine detail. Stimulating dinner conversation. Keep sharing your fun southern boy. And look out for those critters from luv2cook, not sure if they're dead or alive.

Do I have to be "Pro" to read the recipe that you sent? It just says, "oops, here's the recipe" but I don't see anything to click onto.

Hi Gary, It's been about a year since I've visited and I have missed much. Funny how work gets one going like that sometimes. I hope you and your family are all well and prospering. God bless you all!

About Me
i enjoy cooking. the wife considers it a chore. i hate yard work. she loves it. we mesh. i love bass fishing, reading, music, baseball, college football and my family.
My favorite things to cook
i love vegetables, soups, and italian cusine.
My favorite family cooking traditions
holidays are a big deal! christmas is my time to shine. i try to add a new recipe each year, but the family demands pretty much the same menu. kinda frustrating!
My cooking triumphs
i cared for my mother in law about 3 months when she had shattered her shoulder. i didn't work, so money was tight. we survived on only wife's paycheck during that time. ma-n-law had diet restrictions. it was difficult to make cheap, nutritious meals everyone would eat. we prospered as a family and learned alot about each other's strenghths and weaknesses.
My cooking tragedies
a stove top fire. i explained that one already. the grill falling over was another one...oops grill season is here! i love the tragedies...those are the ones that i'll always remember!
