this is a blog about the 1st southern round-up. a woman drove maybe an hour then flew across the country and arrived to hope another woman was waiting to pick her up and both drive 2 hours to meet  a man they had never met, to spend the night in his house and later drive 3-4 hours south to the coast. the woman that DID pick her up at the airport drove @ 8 hours to arrive at the airport at @ 7 in the morning. both were coming from different time zones...traveling east. tired and jet-lagged. they continued south to the house HOPING that what they knew of the host was real.. would i allow my wife to do i would call a psychiatrist or have them drug tested...maybe both.we had another gal drive from @ 9 hours away on a mission of faith as well, another couple drove 4 hours away from their own vacation. another person made arrangements at a GREAT seafood resturarnt and bent her schedule around (as did everyone), to be there and reserve the table. can you believe these people? nope me either! but it happened!  we had a terrific time! it seems like many round-ups are occuring...and they are GREAT! go to one near you if you can! i'm letting ya know now that the 2nd southern round-up is on like neck-bone! probably the middle to last of september. location to be determined, by hands. panama city, fla. rocked last year! but of course other locations considered! i still lcan't get over the fact that there are such trusting folks to sink their time and MONEY on a paid off! i love all ya that attended and can't wait to see ya again! now , for ya southerners get your coffee cans and start filling them up with change ( or better yet ) folding money and make plans to meet some good cooks...but even better... the BEST people on this planet...believe me!
Jan. 10, 2012 5:51 pm
Gary, JIm and I are there... My birth month. Sept. 11! I await the details! We ain't missin' this one!!! ( you like the southern detail?) Thanks gderr for setting it up!
Jan. 10, 2012 5:57 pm
I'm there, and I'll drag Steve along, too. He's useful at the grill. Y'all.
Jan. 10, 2012 6:01 pm
terry you are gonna meet the most WONDERFUL folks...i promise! we got a large home and ya are welcome to rom here. i know cindy lepp will get a bedroom and pelicengal if she can fly in gets one but believe me we have plenty of roon here...too much! but anyways, i live in columbus,ga. it's @ 3-4 hours north of p.c. fla. i'm really thinking n.w. coast of fla. for the round-up...i should have mentioned that! dang it!
Jan. 10, 2012 6:06 pm
Well, you did mention Panama City was the last one, yeah? So i was figuring somewhere in the panhandle again, yes?
Jan. 10, 2012 6:09 pm
oh yes...panhandle fo certain!
Jan. 10, 2012 7:00 pm
LOLOL! Magnolia Blossom drove by herself 8 hours to a total stranger's house and look how that turned out. Year #3 for the Middle Midwest roundup and yet again my dear friend is driving and bringing another AR cook! Yeah for roundups!!
Jan. 10, 2012 7:41 pm
i agree cat! i so wish the cooking-challenged wife and i cook make it. such faith...curosity, or what. who knows but we all believe in each other...i love it!
Jan. 10, 2012 8:06 pm
Hehe, my DH barely blinked when I said I was going to Kansas City to spend the night at a total stranger's house. He just said "I trust you, be careful and have fun." Same thing with Vegas. It takes a leap of faith. You won't regret it.
Jan. 10, 2012 8:22 pm
We have broken all the rules, Gderr, and the results have been outstanding! Good friendships have been cemented. It took a leap of faith for sure & it has paid off. A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.....
Jan. 11, 2012 3:07 am
hi magnolia! there is a magnificent magnolia tree next door to us...i think of you when it blooms. yep, a leap of faith is what's needed. we must TRUST each other...great people here! my wife used to think i was flirting, she know the gals now and understands my sentiments about "my" girls here. we may have a question about something...for instance what type of stove would someone reccomend...and she'll say check with "your girls."
Jan. 11, 2012 3:09 am
i agree baking nana! just a little faith and that 1st step...
Jan. 11, 2012 6:43 am
Love what B'Nana said about that first step! So true!!
Jan. 11, 2012 2:30 pm
Gary, you and Mike Harvey really aren't strangers. You both have shared so much and been so open that you have become family members I just haven't met yet. And just as an aside, my DD#2, who lives in England, stilll asks me how Claire is doing. See? Cindy and Pelicangal are smart, independent women and they know exactly when it is safe to trust and they struck gold with you and Claire!
Jan. 11, 2012 3:16 pm
Hey Gary - - I'm IN like flint!! YAHOO - and yeeeee doggies!!!! Wherever you put it - I'll be there fo sure!! You & Claire are the best - Southern hospitality at it's finest!
Jan. 11, 2012 4:24 pm
hi bsm! NO, your wrong...we hit the jackpot with those gals! pelicangal(jan) would not let anyone near her 1 butt kitchen! so funny...ok, grab me a beer and i'll sit on the balcony catching some rays. just great folks, you need to try and make it, the weather is gorgeous and hotels are mucho cheaper.
Jan. 11, 2012 4:29 pm
hi luv! prepare to meet the best folks on the planet! believe me!! we don't really cook much...we talk oh and we talk, oh yeah...we talk some more....we laugh our butts off! you won't believe how many things you will find in common or how different the screen names or from what you expect...but in a good way!i stayed awake until 4 am. with cindy and jan and finally when to sleep on their couch they stayed up all was great!
Jan. 11, 2012 5:55 pm
Oh.. I loved what BSM said. And yeah best folks on the planet! And blast and tarnish I want to come to the Southern roundup! Maybe next year.
Jan. 11, 2012 6:13 pm
hi cat! start saving a little every can drive to our house and spend the night. this is truly a grand event. it's much cheaper when i'm planning it and many folks bunk to save even more!
Jan. 11, 2012 8:33 pm
Gderr, you and Claire are Awesome! Your energy is what got the S. roundup going, and you are keeping it alive at warp speed with your warm, Southern hospitality style! Thanks! Don't think I/we can come, but love reading about all the fun! Hope your new kitchen is what you wanted! BTW, thank you for using that magnificent house as a welcoming home. Too many "owners" of such homes would never open their doors to others as you have offered/done!
Jan. 11, 2012 8:36 pm
Hi Gary, I bet Pelicandrove more than an hour to the nearest airport. More like 2+ hours. She's pretty isolated in her little corner of the state. Back to the subject, it truly is a leap of faith and such a loving an trusting atmosphere among those that like to cook. When I first met Candice, she said something similar, "people that cook, are just good people"...'nuff said. I really wished I could win a lottery and have enough money to travel to all of these round-ups and just drop in on some of the others. I would be traveling from Ireland, to NJ, to Michigan, to Ill., to all over Canada and all points in between. And tell Claire, you really are like family we just haven't met yet. You both are.
Jan. 12, 2012 6:03 am
I second your emotion gderr. I have made precious friendships that will stand the test of time. After attending Baking Nana's first So Cal roundup, I was hooked. I take every opportunity to attend these and it inspired my Las Vegas blowout. I would like to encourage folks to also host one in their region if they cannot attend one near their home. It can be as simple as a shared coffee or lunch. We have a fabulous group of people here.....enjoy them.
Jan. 12, 2012 7:32 am
hi maw! thanks for your sentiments...but believe me, it's a pleasure! cindy and jan drove up in the driveway last ( and jan immediately begins feeding the mosquitos, lol.) i guess they don't get much british/ northwestern blood here. they honked the horn....that was the starting bell to a great week! but, anyone traveling certainly has the opportunity to sleep over here and we will caravan down to the coast!
Jan. 12, 2012 7:35 am
hi avon! you're a sweetheart! i truly was amazed at our similarietes! just crazy! i certainly wish you could make it! i love your wit!
Jan. 12, 2012 7:37 am
hi maui! i agree if ya can't attend a round-up, organize one in your area! you will cement a relationship with someone you only know from a screen name/ avatar. you won't be sorry!
Jan. 12, 2012 8:44 am
Yay! I'm so excited for the next southern roundup! I had such a great time and Gary, you are right, the BEST people ever gathered here in Panama City for it!
Jan. 12, 2012 11:53 am
hi amanda! yep, seems like there will be more trusting souls coming to join the madness. i can't wait either! let me know about van halen!
Jan. 12, 2012 1:37 pm
I'm coming. Already saved up $400. I think that this time though I am going to fly into Nashville and drive down with Cindy and keep her company. Where is she anyway, I haven't seen her in a while. Hope she is okay. Can't wait to see everyone again. Big hugs from Oregon
Jan. 12, 2012 1:55 pm
OMYGOSH! Really! Oh JAN! you are such a sweetheart......YAYAYAYAYAY!
Jan. 12, 2012 2:02 pm
Somewhere along the Beaches of South Walton on to Destin (great shopping, there) is the best place in Fl. to me. Being a native Georgian, I have missed very few summers w/o going to Fl. Not sure yet if I can come. I'm probably one of the closest to you, about 1 1/2 hrs. from here to Columbus.
Jan. 12, 2012 2:04 pm
love ya sweetie! i talked to her yesterday or the day before. she is fine. hey, we got at least 3 new folks coming...gonna be LARGE! we gotta pick a location...maybe by april...everyone can choose a spot then most positives reponses win. we should still have time to book cheap. try and bring jerry...we gottem oysters!

Jan. 12, 2012 2:27 pm
Blast but the DH is still laid off and I haven't been down in that part of the country in longer than I want to count but you know we are better off than some and I will at least get to see some very lovely people at the Midwest roundup :)
Jan. 12, 2012 2:33 pm
Sounded like you all had a great time. I would love to join you if I can.....I will start saving my dollars. I met Pelicangal in summer of 2010 in Oregon. What a sweet woman.

Jan. 12, 2012 3:37 pm
Gary, you get to pick the location for me. I have no idea where to go. I also think that next time we should meet up with you in Alabama. Your skeeters are as big as horses, and as you know I am allergic. lol
Jan. 12, 2012 3:53 pm
hi jan! we will vote on the location...i got another place in will love and cindy will bunk with us there, possibily someone else. but all panhandle locations are to be voted on.
Jan. 12, 2012 3:54 pm

Jan. 12, 2012 4:22 pm
I sooo wanted to go to the last round up but just couldnt swing it. Maybe I can this next time....Maybe some of us folks from this area (atlanta & north) can ride together or something...It sounds like lots of fun...
Jan. 12, 2012 5:21 pm
hi jnb! get ready to have some serious fun. it's rooming together with folks you don't know ( or by yourself) just to save some money. we truly had a will too! my home is open to everyone passing this way. it's a large home and plenty of couches are still avaliabe! that nut is again flying cross-country and getting picked up by another great nut in nashville, tn. then driving heck i don't know maybe @ 10 hours south to our house. cindylepp and robogranma left blogs from last year's round-up. we did truly laugh our butts off! you will too!
Jan. 12, 2012 9:24 pm

Jan. 13, 2012 1:51 pm
Wow this is great...I'm so glad you are doing this again since I missed the last one. I already asked DH about doing a couple weeks in the panhandle instead of the mountains this coming fall. So we push our trip ahead a couple weeks to make sure we are there when the round up happens.
Jan. 13, 2012 4:13 pm

About Me
i enjoy cooking. the wife considers it a chore. i hate yard work. she loves it. we mesh. i love bass fishing, reading, music, baseball, college football and my family.
My favorite things to cook
i love vegetables, soups, and italian cusine.
My favorite family cooking traditions
holidays are a big deal! christmas is my time to shine. i try to add a new recipe each year, but the family demands pretty much the same menu. kinda frustrating!
My cooking triumphs
i cared for my mother in law about 3 months when she had shattered her shoulder. i didn't work, so money was tight. we survived on only wife's paycheck during that time. ma-n-law had diet restrictions. it was difficult to make cheap, nutritious meals everyone would eat. we prospered as a family and learned alot about each other's strenghths and weaknesses.
My cooking tragedies
a stove top fire. i explained that one already. the grill falling over was another one...oops grill season is here! i love the tragedies...those are the ones that i'll always remember!
