And i have cried every day for 1 year, 1 month, and 1week. LET SLIP THE DOGS OF WAR! i was prepared for anything the doctors at the shepherds center said this afternoon. this was a final evaulation. "can she go back to teaching without supervision?" that was really our only question. if she needed "accominadations"...supervision, would our school district budget for it? i truly did not care what shepherds center said, i knew they had her best interest at heart, and i may have to battle our school district. i was prepared either way. Claire's blood pressure was 130 over 90...she was worried. hell. we both were.         Moose and tater had spent a week in washington state, visiting the great aunt ( Dana...101 yrs. young!) they had a blast and saw hurricane ridge, visited allrecipes in seattle, ate at ray's boathouse ( great suggestion ww!), the tidal pools at salt creek, the indian reservation, they had a blast. totally exhausted when i picked them up. they said jack in the box out there was very good  (lol) "the denver bowl rocks!) ...they really had a blast. i would love to visit the great northwest one day and have a " denver bowl" too. my girls are screwballs, but i love them with a ferocity i can not describe., i told the tater to blow a 100 bucks on something, anything...i would not judge. they picked up rocks along the shore and sent them back unitied postal service in a flat-rate  $ 10.50 box. " over ten ,but not 11 bucks " our mailman is gonna have a hernia according the the moose and tater.    as Claire and i were driving back from atlanta this late afternoon we were listening to the radio and singing along to some great songs. a blast from the past comes on, "  only you" by yaz.. kinda made the moment.     i asked her her favorite meal she ever had. she replied the one that i had made her. grilled salmon, lobster, grilled taters, onions sweet taters, asparagus. i said are you sure?  i told her i would make that this evening. she said sunday is better. we got pizza from a neighbor's son's pizza place.. free..  my neighbors rock!....i started this blog ( journey) a day after Claire had her stroke, i think. we we were going to the dekalb international  farmers market on a sunday, when we spent that day at the hospital trying to find out why her migranes would not subside and why she was feeling so weird. they took  a ct scan and ran blood tests. they released her she suffered a massive stroke the next day less then 24 hours later. i was beyond crazy MAD! and scared. we left shephers center today and  forgot the map-quest to dekalbs'.      the doctors released her today from having to have supervision when she returns to her classroom. she is now able to do what she loves . we went and picked up the pizzas. we are both totally physically and mentally exhausted. she tells me lets take a short-cut home. i agree, of course. it's to her class room. i go in with her. she is considering where to poistion the tables, chairs, her " brag" board ( the one with prior national day winners names on it) i tell her i want to smoke, i walk outside and hope she doesn;t see me crying.    THANK YOU EVERYONE THAT HAS HELPED IN HER RECOVERY! she is a miracle! may god bless!

Jul. 15, 2010 7:25 pm
Such a long and winding road (can you hear the music?)! Life is like that. If it's not one thing, it's another. I only wish that more people could have a significant other like you do! And how lucky are her students! Can you only begin to imagine her first day back in front of classes???!!!
Jul. 15, 2010 7:29 pm
hi lmp! very well said! i believe this was a group effort to " will" her back! one doctor had said she would be a vegetable...her doctor in atlanta, mentioned that today. ( i'm a cry-baby...and yes i cried), our shepherds dr. gave us her e-mail address and took pictures of claire to show how much a hemmoragic stroke victim can recover versus a schmetic stroke victim. she said claire was the most recovered/recovered patient she had had since she had been at shepherds. it is an amazing recovery i have pictures on my phone that are gruesome of her after some surgeries. just an amazing recovery.

Jul. 16, 2010 7:46 pm
hi nook! she lost pretty much the whole year. she did go up after school to fund-raise for the trip to baltimore. the great thing is she teaches the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade gifted,so she will have some students that will be 8th graders that she can count on for her history day projects...she has made the nationals 14 straight years.
Jul. 16, 2010 7:47 pm
hi kateio! thanks for saying such a nice thing!
Jul. 16, 2010 7:52 pm

Jul. 16, 2010 8:00 pm
hi patty cakes! love ya gal! their box of rocks was delivered today she proceeded to explain what type they were and what they consisted of. that's how she rolls just another hobby that stimulates her. she has taken up latin again...just because. if she ever got on jeopardy alex terbeck would be out of a job, if she ever caught the right cab in nyc. she would ask to be driven back home just to answer the questions. her intellect is definitely not in question! it's folks like all that have commented on this and prior blogs that have helped ME cope. THANK YOU ALL!
Jul. 16, 2010 8:03 pm

Jul. 17, 2010 5:54 am
Her struggle has been tremendous, but well recorded thanks to her amazing husband. I am so happy for Claire to get back to the life she loves, but an extra hug to you for being such a rock to your family thru all of this. She IS an inspiration, but you inspire me as much if not more.
Jul. 17, 2010 6:54 am
What great news! You both deserve the best in life. Claire choosing to spend her $$ on "free" rocks really tickled me because I a huge rock hound as well and can SO see myself doing the same thing. We were camping/dirtbiking a couple of years ago and one evening we took a stroll down by this creekbed. Well, we had gotten about a mile away from our campsite when I saw this rock that looked like an enormous baking potato and I knew I MUST have it. Hubby was too embarassed to carry it and it was HEAVY. I took many breaks sitting it down but I finally made it back and that enormous "baking potato" sits proudly right in the middle of my flower bed :) Again, congratuations on the good news!
Jul. 17, 2010 7:33 am
How did I miss this for so long? Sooo happy for you, Claire and your family.Gary, thanks for sharing this journey with us. I really liked how Shorecook said" and they lived happily ever after." That is the ending in fairy tales which is fitting because you and Claire seem to have the kind of love you read about in fairy tales and Claire the beautiful princess is lucky to have her handsome prince. Love ya Gary!
Jul. 17, 2010 1:39 pm

" i found the lemons and limes!" ok...what's up? awww boiled shrimp and baked taters. life is good! i'm just her witness, nothing special. there is a plan for her. i saw the movie temple grandin...i thought of claire. so wonderful to see her so active. it seems like last year never happened. thank you...she is my inspiration. i'm weak compared to the strength claire has shown.
Jul. 17, 2010 6:37 pm
hi soup loving nicole! her interests are so varied. i used to think it was act to impress me with her intelligence. what an egotistical manicac i was! she collected " things" that were interesting. i know that sounds common, but...for instance she would pick up dead, dry critters to determine what they were and try to determine their age and/or cause of death. nothing scared her. and believe me i can take the panty-waist quickly out of you. she has always loved rocks, shells, petrified wood, indian shards. she has donated the best of her collections to our local museum.
Jul. 17, 2010 6:43 pm
hi tanya! yes it seems now, like from " far away and quickly becoming forgotten..the tough times. so many miracles, large then smaller happening. i'm glad i wrote about her journey...i can remember the extrememly tough times.the small victories that meant so much at that time. i prayed she would just respond to me...for almost a month. i saw her endure extreme pain when doctors tried to get a response. none came. it was horrible.
Jul. 17, 2010 6:46 pm
hi njmom! she is sitting beside me on the couch reading a book..just unbelievable!

Jul. 17, 2010 9:44 pm
hi maggi! thank you, yes this going to be a life filled with no regret, we have been blessed with a 2nd chance. we will not squander it. the ideas, trips, things that you can never find time to them now. be safe and well.
Jul. 17, 2010 9:44 pm
Oh, Gary! Isn't it amazing what a little faith can do? Finally, you can stop holding your collective breaths and breathe again! Congratulations! Claire has already shown us what her purpose is. Just look at the lives the both of you have touched in such a positive way. There are doctors who will no longer rush to pass judgement, nurses who will remember to continue to treat all their patients with dignity, and families who will continue to hope. There is a united community of strangers that has come together for no other purpose than to help someone in need. There are children who will continue to be taught by a caring, compassionate teacher who will not let them give up on themselves. She can honestly say that there is no such thing as "can't". You have both taught us that love is SO much more than an emotion, but small acts of selflessness on a daily basis. The list could go on and on, but I don't think that anyone could ever come to the end of it. Thank you for sharing your journey.

Jul. 20, 2010 7:00 pm
hi janet! thanks! some folks that knew her in the past still ask if she can walk, talk, feed herself, etc. i just tell them she will be teaching in august. i don't think they believe how massive her stroke was and how massive was her recovery. i get up earlier then her as well as go to bed later. i saw her strech both arms over her head a couple nights ago. she did it because she wanted to was natural. i almost cried.
Jul. 20, 2010 11:19 pm

About Me
i enjoy cooking. the wife considers it a chore. i hate yard work. she loves it. we mesh. i love bass fishing, reading, music, baseball, college football and my family.
My favorite things to cook
i love vegetables, soups, and italian cusine.
My favorite family cooking traditions
holidays are a big deal! christmas is my time to shine. i try to add a new recipe each year, but the family demands pretty much the same menu. kinda frustrating!
My cooking triumphs
i cared for my mother in law about 3 months when she had shattered her shoulder. i didn't work, so money was tight. we survived on only wife's paycheck during that time. ma-n-law had diet restrictions. it was difficult to make cheap, nutritious meals everyone would eat. we prospered as a family and learned alot about each other's strenghths and weaknesses.
My cooking tragedies
a stove top fire. i explained that one already. the grill falling over was another one...oops grill season is here! i love the tragedies...those are the ones that i'll always remember!
