she is doing fine. she is still on coumdien. we have speech, physical, and occupational therapy every week...twice a week. i've already shown my butt once about the therapists not being available at her set appointment time. i'm not very patient with incompetence...they understand that now. she must go back in the hospital for at least a week to come off cumiden and go on actrophan (sp), so she can have the final (i hope) surgery to remove her skull from her abomen and screwed back to the rest of her skull. she has been great. multi-tasking is still difficult...sequencing is also an issue, her left hand is receiving very little use. i try and encourage her to use her left ( i hand things to her left side, i make her button her clothes...small things i know...but important now.) her resolve has been amazing...her strength incredible! she tires easily,. i let her nap. i try to be funny with her. she has been amazing..progress is continuing..i'm so excited! one last surgery...well 2 but we are gonna have humpty-dumpty back together again. i want everyone to know ya have been fantastic with your support. i read back thru my earlier posts and you're generoisty has been over-whelming and much appreciative! may god bless you as he has for my claire! my amusements have been neither focucsed or well recievied. such as i wanted to take her the local library and play rugby in the kids section (she does wear a hemet), volunteer both of us at the animal shelter and sell bar b q advertised as recent kills, and show up at all the local televised city council meetings protesting the vietnam war..."it's a stroke thing" love ya...can ya think of anything else to occupy my tater?

Gary, so good to hear that Tater's progressing! I do hope she can have that last surgery soon - seems that might just be even more encouraging for her. I know you say you're lucky to have her, but she is so lucky to have you. You know we all support you both, but you have been so wonderful and supportive for Claire! Take care, and thanks for the update. PS, I like the BBQ idea, personally. ;)

Hey Gary, I haven't posted in a while. I've been busy with a new granddaughter. However, I have still thought about Claire & you. I have wanted to ask, but did not, while she was so ill, can you post more pictures of ya'll? I love pictures! I'm so glad she is improving so rapidly. How about the computer or is that to difficult b/c of motor skills? Also, my grandsons have a Wii. It is great for coordination.

Hi Gary! Great hearin' from ya. I continue to lift you all up in prayer, believing that He who has begun a good work will see it through to completion. Something you might consider doing with Claire is simply a game of cards. It may well prove to be just engaging enough so as not to over tax her, while allowing you both to spend some quiet quality time together. Grace to you all. kdstreet

Glad that Claire is about ready to enter the last phase of medical treatment. Great that you can continue to be so upbeat; the daily wear and tear of life grinds so many people down, but you are able to see the positive-that the two of you are still together. Happy to hear from you-please continure to update us. My thoughts and prayers for the two of you and your family continue.

You are both such an inspiration and picture of Love and Dedication. Good to see that's still out there! I'm still praying for your family and have others praying too! - - Side note, our holistic Dr. told us to bind my Dad's right arm to force him to use his left side after his stroke. Couldn't do it, seemed cruel, but I do understand the concept behind it. He didn't have the surgeries your lovely Tater is going through. Continued prayers for your family!

hi all! i love the roller derby idea! i told her about and she giggled! oh btw, we made the local paper...we had a special vote to increase the sales tax 1 penny so, claire being a teacher, it affected her directly. her classroom is a trailer. and the extra money was going to the construction of a new high and junior high school as well as additions to other schools. claire's school being one of them. the vote passed! anyway...at www.ledger-enquirer.com we are in the photo on sept. 16 2009 page a7. she has her helmet of course and i have my crew-cut and belly.

I bet you do keep Claire amused lol....wishing you both good days!! Glad she is on such a good road of recovery. I wasn't able to see the picture, but still would like to. Visiting a park, browsing library, concert, small dinner with friends, country drive, short walk, movie marathon, dominoes/games?? May God continue to bless you both! Hugs...

Variety is the spice of life, right? Keep thinking like you're young again, and you will forever be young at heart! I'm glad you make Claire keep on trying to regain her skills that have been on the sidelines. Hugs and prayers!

You have a great sense of humor and I am sure there is hardly a dull moment around the the Derr household. Just wait, one day she is going to say yes to one of your crazy ideas and then will you do it? I think you will...♥

You feel blessed by our thoughts and prayers but I feel blessed to know you. Even from the beginning when you reached out to your AR family, it was a blessing for us. To be able to share your thoughts and feelings, the good and the bad, has been a sign of character and love. Love for life and a love for Claire. Thanks for sharing and allowing us to be a part of your life. May many blessings continue to come your way. Give Claire and the girls a hug.

About Me
i enjoy cooking. the wife considers it a chore. i hate yard work. she loves it. we mesh. i love bass fishing, reading, music, baseball, college football and my family.
My favorite things to cook
i love vegetables, soups, and italian cusine.
My favorite family cooking traditions
holidays are a big deal! christmas is my time to shine. i try to add a new recipe each year, but the family demands pretty much the same menu. kinda frustrating!
My cooking triumphs
i cared for my mother in law about 3 months when she had shattered her shoulder. i didn't work, so money was tight. we survived on only wife's paycheck during that time. ma-n-law had diet restrictions. it was difficult to make cheap, nutritious meals everyone would eat. we prospered as a family and learned alot about each other's strenghths and weaknesses.
My cooking tragedies
a stove top fire. i explained that one already. the grill falling over was another one...oops grill season is here! i love the tragedies...those are the ones that i'll always remember!
