What a haircut!

moose gave tater a "haircut." so nasty. i'm glad one of her nurses gave me her hair from her 1st brian surgery. i'll just bring a stapler and correct that misadventure. life is grand. we have more movement in her left arm and hand. it's slowly coming back. her doctor said the nerves are regenerating and/or forming new pathways. she is extrememly sensitive. i raised her left arm to place a pillow underneath earlier this evening and she almost cried. i did cry. but, that was good...she felt it. i hated her pain. bad news,  always some bad news...the cumiden is not being effective. she has lost maybe 20-25 pounds. she is now a pin-up. i don't want to see her lose any more weight. august 17th is still her target release date. i'm going up this sunday and staying thru tuesday evening. i'll learn how to be her primary care-giver. i'm looking forward to see her in rehab situations. her princpal came by with his son this afternoon and reassured her her job was waiting. very nice of him to take time to drive that far. a great guy who had a good friend many years ago come to the shepherd center with a spinal cord injury. another test tomorrow to see if taking trach out is possible. she still has her feeding tube, but have not fed her thru it since sunday evening. with her trach and feeding tube out she could go in the pool which i believe would greatly benefit her. i'm concerned about her cumiden, but not letting her know my concern. i believe the levels will get worked out. may your trials be be few and your triumphs great. thank you for your continued support...i truly feel that the many blessings that have been bestowed upon her have helped her!

Gaary, always good to see your post. I look forward to learning what Clair has achieved each day. You are both so strong and brave and I admire you both greatly. God has been so good in answering our prayers for the two of you and I know He will continue to do so. I love you both and your two girls. Keep up the good thoughts and know you are loved by all us on AR Ginny

Gary, SOOO glad to find out about your blog! Please give Claire my love and let her know that we pray for her daily. She is blessed to have the support of so many. Her courageous and competative spirit will not let her stop short of complete recovery. Your faith and the faith of those around her are the engines that keep her going! Give her a sqeeze for me! Take care of yourself so that you can take care of her. She needs you. Much love, Sherrie Watkins

sherrie you have been a rock. i know you remember the early days when we/i was just shell-shocked by this. she has been a rock...strong as an ox! i truly believe the many kind thoughts have contributed to her recovery. you, peggi, alberta and so many others to include these kind and caring folks on this site have worked a miracle. i'm just a witness. may god bless you and all the caring, supportive folks that have shown such compassion for my wife/life! she is my life.

gderr...would you share the address at Shepherd center again. I sent a card to each hospital but have lost the Shepherd address. Happy to see progress and tell Claire to keep it up and SHE can share my "80th" birthday party. I'll expect her there with bells on!
Jul. 22, 2009 10:52 pm
Baby steps Gary, every day there is some kind of progress, one foot in front of the other, you know the drill. The coumadin issue will be resolved, have faith, Lord knows we all do.
Jul. 23, 2009 12:09 am
Thanks for keeping us update, gderr; I'm glad to hear she's making progress! Take care of YOU, too!!! You & your family continue to be in my thoughts!

Gary, each and every post is a miracle in itself. Claire has come a long way in a very short time. I'm so happy for all of you. We continue to pray for all of you daily and can't wait till the day she is up and running on all cylinders (it sounds like it is going to be very soon). I am in awe of her strength (and yours). God bless all of you.
Jul. 23, 2009 5:43 am
Thank you Gary for the update. I will continue to pray, especially that the cumiden issue is straightened up quickly. Have a super good weekend with Claire. Draw off each other's strenghts and take care.

Gary, we're all dancing for joy. Look how far this woman has come already! The pool would be an excellent way to rehab those muscles. Speak to her doc about your coumadin concerns. They'd be glad to put your mind at ease over that. Many, many prayers still heading your way. Love and hugs to all.
Jul. 23, 2009 7:39 am
Glad to hear she's doing well! My mom had issues with coumadin - everytime she had surgery they had to take her off it, then getting back on was a pain. Took a couple weeks to get her levels where they needed to be...but it did happen, and hopefully it will for Claire soon! I love hearing "target release date"...she's come a long way! ;)
Jul. 23, 2009 8:29 am
How wonderful, Gary! Yes, the pool sounds like a great theraputic opportunity. Still praying for complete healing, and praising God for how far He has brought your 'tater' to date! I bet it meant a lot to Claire for her principal to travel to see her, that is sweet. Keep looking up to the Lord, isn't He just awesome?!! Bless ya Gary. ♥ from WA state.
Jul. 23, 2009 8:53 am
Thanks for the update! Glad to hear she is progressing so well! Things should get even better once the trach is out. Don't forget to take care of you to!! ((hugs)) Cara
Jul. 23, 2009 9:10 am
Little by little, bit by bit, one triumph after another, Claire will come through this; and that coumadin is going to work. Believing God for you all and refusing to give ground, KDStreet
Jul. 23, 2009 10:12 am
Hi gderr, thanks for the update. Being a lab tech I know how hard it is to get coumadin therapy regulated. It always seems to take so long for people new to it. Hang in there, they'll get it figured out! I think alot about your girls and what they must be going thru, they are in my heart as are you and your beautiful Claire. I am faced with that fact that I have to watch my dad slowing waste away from some yet undiagnosed progressive neurological disease. I have much empathy for your girls, no matter how old you are, it is so scary seeing your parents like that. I am so happy that Claire is making progress. Tell her I say hi and wish her well. Laura
Jul. 23, 2009 10:26 am
Good to hear all the news, even the bad haircut!LOL! I suppose we will need to rule out cosmetology as a profession for your Moose! Oh well, hair grows back! I know you have to be getting pretty excited about getting Claire home soon! I hope maybe they can figure out a good alternative to the coumiden soon. (((Hugs))) from Kentucky!
Jul. 23, 2009 10:51 am
Step by step = progress :)---Awww her hair will grow!! {After carwreck & surgery, I was bald once for a short time}...but I bet she's still beautiful to you. ~~~~Will be praying for the best time for the trach & tube to be removed. May your time together this weekend be full of blessings & smiles. Hope that you are all resting better. Hugs for derr family...take care!!
Jul. 23, 2009 1:49 pm
Thanks for the update, Gary. The day Claire goes home, we'll have to have an online party in her honor! We can take a picture of a recipe we make with a little sign that says "Welcome Home, Claire" and post it on our profiles... unless you think deviled eggs will make it through the mail, lol. I'll continue to keep you all in my thoughts, and can't wait to hear the next update!
Jul. 23, 2009 2:06 pm
Your family remains in my thoughts and prayers. Your faith and love is so inspiring, I can't even begin to tell you. I know sharing your story has helped me to grow and believe in faith and hope and love. My best to you all.
Jul. 23, 2009 2:48 pm

Jul. 23, 2009 5:12 pm
My mother-in-law was on coumadin. She had to have very frequent blood tests and make dosage adjustments. Do not despair...Continued thoughts and prayers to you and yours.
Jul. 23, 2009 6:30 pm
Hi Gary, such good news....It took over 3 months for the docs to get my coumadin levelled off and my body wasn't undergoing any of the changes that Claire's is. It is something to be aware of, but not overly concerned... I love the fact you can joke a bit...God Bless you all, Chris
Jul. 23, 2009 8:05 pm
Wonderful news! I know you don't want to see her pain but as you said.. she feels it.. that's a step forward. As always.. you're all in my thoughts and prayers.. *hugs*
Jul. 23, 2009 9:12 pm

I posted this in RE for you but I wanted to post it here as well so it's not lost in cyber space... not sure if you would see it there either. I hope you like it------> "Gary.. you and Claire are on my mind and in my thoughts and prayers every day. I am so in awe of the love you guys have for each other... a love rarely seen anymore. I found this video on YouTube and wanted to share it with you. It reminds me of you and Claire and how you never lose your hope and faith. This is both a song about the love i see between you two and the love that God has for you both as well. I hope you like it.. please click the link and have a listen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DfhdfMCDJw&feature=relate (I hope this works)". I also am posting lyrics. Sorry for the long post but I wanted you to have the words to this song as well. Here they be:::: You walked with me Footprints in the sand And helped me understand Where I'm going You walked with me When I was all alone With so much unknown Along the way Then I heard you say (Chorus) I promise you I'm always there When your heart is filled with sorrow And despair I'll carry you When you need a friend You'll find my footprints in the sand I see my life Flash across the sky So many times have I Been so afraid And just when I Have thought I'd lost my way You gave me strength to carry on Thats when I heard you say (Chorus) I promise you I'm always there When your heart is filled with sorrow And despair I'll carry you When you need a friend You'll find my footprints in the sand When I'm weary Well, I know you've been there And I can feel you when you say I promise you I'm always there When your heart is filled with sadness And despair I'll carry you When you need a friend You'll find my footprints in the sand

Sounds like things are SO MUCH BETTER!I'm thrilled!.. As Froghopper said Coumadin is that way. My Dad is on it and has to have his blood tested every month since he's had a pacemaker put in. The lab is always calling and telling him to change the way he takes it! (All the time!) It gets frustrating because you think they'd figure it out by now he's only been on it for 10 years! :) Well for him it's for life since he has a pacemaker and the blood has to be thinned with the coumadin to pass through the pacemaker! Too thin and he bruises and bleeds very easily!.. It's just one of those things and it keeps my Dad alive! Well, hope Claire's not too upset about her hair... I'm sure she's beautiful! God bless!..
Jul. 30, 2009 11:42 am
Gary, I am so happy to hear about the improvement in Claire's left side! The doctors and staff at The Shepherd Center are truly angels working miracles!! I agree with you - if Claire could get into the pool it would be such a help. She'd be able to exercise her muscles without the stress of gravity interfering and her rehab would be so much more effective. I will pray for her to improve to the point where they can remove the trach and feeding tubes ASAP so she can start some aquatic therapy. Also, don't give up on the Coumadin therapy. The doctors will find the right balance for Claire's system. Sometimes it takes a really long time to find that fine line between a therapeutic dosage and too much or too little. Massive hugs coming your way from here in California!!
Jul. 30, 2009 1:21 pm
Thanks Gary for keeping us updated! Each time I read your blog I get excited how well Clair is doing and also you and your family:0 Continued prayers to you and your family.

About Me
i enjoy cooking. the wife considers it a chore. i hate yard work. she loves it. we mesh. i love bass fishing, reading, music, baseball, college football and my family.
My favorite things to cook
i love vegetables, soups, and italian cusine.
My favorite family cooking traditions
holidays are a big deal! christmas is my time to shine. i try to add a new recipe each year, but the family demands pretty much the same menu. kinda frustrating!
My cooking triumphs
i cared for my mother in law about 3 months when she had shattered her shoulder. i didn't work, so money was tight. we survived on only wife's paycheck during that time. ma-n-law had diet restrictions. it was difficult to make cheap, nutritious meals everyone would eat. we prospered as a family and learned alot about each other's strenghths and weaknesses.
My cooking tragedies
a stove top fire. i explained that one already. the grill falling over was another one...oops grill season is here! i love the tragedies...those are the ones that i'll always remember!
