hi ya! news continues to be good. some bad things to report. here's the bad ...the cumiden is not yet effective. we need to get a happy balance between her immune system and the blood-thinner. not in sync yet. her doctor is sending blood samples to another hospital where a blood specialist works to check the samples. her doctor said he is THE expert. i like her, she seems commited to helping my wife. its been a trying week. i've begun the process of starting social security benefits for her. she is so much better! she has begun walking at rehab (only) and beginning to feed herself. her left arm is still wrapped. my sister-in-law from chicago flew in today and will spend the week with her. terri is a terrific sister, she will push claire to the limit.i'm so very glad she is her for her big sister! the nurse said they are ready to start sme speech tests. next step would be removal of the trach! claire hates it...i understand. her doctor called thursday and we talked about her progress. this is when i found out about the blood-thinner and how it was affecting her. but the good doctor also brought out the problem of my tater being more mobile. she wants to restrain her in the evenings. i was tater is trying to move..go to the bathroom? terrific news! of course, i say restrain her. she still needs an escort to the bathroom, heck..anywhere. she has a portion of her skull implanted in her abodmen (for safe keeping until reinstalled) and she's on a blood thinner. if she fell and hit her head or cut herself things could go dim quick. but i did find it funny, 3 weeks ago i was praying for a twich and now we have to use restraints. a miracle in the making! ok, best news yet...i asked her to move her left hand. she did with her right hand,  yeah that doesn't count i tell her. couple hours later, before i leave, i tell her the first thing she moved when she became  somewhat cogisnant was her right hand. again i tell her to move her left hand. she does...she kinda spiders it, then releases and does it again. i kiss her. then i kiss her some more. my wife is going to make a nice vegetable soup one day and i am going to remember the kind souls here for your support and wish you could have a bowlful of " vegetable's" soup as well. may you be at peace and love each's all we have.

Gderr, your blogs always move me to tears, but thank goodness the last few have been tears of joy. The news continues to get better and better and I am so happy for you. My DH was in the hospital recently and is now on coumiden. It takes some time to regulate and to coordinate with the diet. They told him not to eat green leafy veggies (too much vitamin K) but now he takes his pills and eats 1/2 cup of spinach a day and his levels are fine. They just need to find the correct combination, and I know that they will. Take care Buddy. Give Tater and Moose and Gator big (((hugs))) from Oregon.

Gary did you get the post on your last blog about the book? It is by a woman who had a stroke. Her line of work? She is a brain specialist. She does research on the brain and it's function and she put everything down in a journel. Now I don't know what I did the the name of the book and the ladies name. Go back and look on your last blog. IL am so happy for the Derr family. Long, long road but I have no doubt Claire and you will make it just fine. The power of God, the power of love, the power of the human spirit is enough to over come a lot. Still in my prayers and thoughts. Love, Annie

I had to go back & catch up on a couple posts. So glad I did. Such wonderful good news was in them. I learn from the comments your name is Gary so I hope it is ok to be familiar. I continue to keep you all & Claire's team in prayer. The positives that come from people sharing their hearts, their hopes & prayers, their love are such moving things. As I've seen mentioned by others in comments over these past few weeks just as Claire and you are being blessed so are we "out here". I personally feel very privileged just to be privy of this so that I may join in the prayer for Claire's recovery. I praise God for her progress and for sticking very close to you as well. And I'm also very thankful for each & every one who has offered you words of encouragement & the desire to share the weight of this load. I love it that Claire is feisty enough to humor you (moving the one hand with the other), shows what she's made of. May the blessings continue to flow your & Claire's way!

Hi Gary and Claire. Glad to hear such wonderful news; and yes, the restraints are a good idea :-) I am believing God with you that the coumadin will balance out. From my own past experience with it, I know that it takes consistent monitoring many times before the levels adjust, and afterwards to keep it in check. Through all that has been, and all that is ahead I know that God has a wonderful purpose in store for you both. His grace be with you. kdstreet

Claire seems to be coming along, but it will be slow. Every new thing she can do is wonderful. After my moms brain surgery for aneurysm even before she was moved to rehab they kept her restrained and then in a net bed when she slept. It was really hard to see her in there trying to get out like an animal at the zoo and pleading to get out. But it was for her safety, she kept trying to run away. She even tried to bribe the grandkids to let her out of the wheelchair when they would go for a ride down the hallway. She was hilarious at times. She started watching Xena Warrior Princess on tv, something she had never done! Her sense of humor is still a little skewed, but unless you knew her really well you wouldnt notice. They did a really good job at the rehab, they have a whole place setup to let them relearn how to navigate restuarants and movie theaters. They have a kitchen and a car inside to relearn them how to drive and get along in the kitchen. They wouldn't let her go home until she could do all those things again. I'm just glad to have her for as long as God lets her and my dad be here. She's almost 82 now. I'll keep praying for your Claire!
Jul. 19, 2009 5:54 pm

Jul. 21, 2009 8:59 am
I haven't been around for a while since my dad had a stroke. I've been too busy juggling time between my home and my parent's home and they don't have a computer. I wanted to take a few minutes to check up on you and your girl this morning and I'm so glad I did. I knew Claire was doing better because someone was kind enough to let me know the last time I made a brief appearance on the exchange, but I didn't realize how far she has come, and now the nurses have to "restrain" her? LOL!....That is such amazing and wonderful news. I am so happy for you and your family.
Jul. 21, 2009 11:44 am
Again Congrats, progress is in the wrks along with you answered prayers :) I couldn't be happier for you :)?
Jul. 21, 2009 12:09 pm
Gary, I know blogging about this has been a good release for you, but by doing so, you have also enriched all of us. Thank you for your generous spirit. God Bless You All, Chris
Jul. 21, 2009 1:08 pm
This all sounds great. I have a bit of experience with Coumadin too. It is notoriously difficult to regulate and even patients who've been on it for months need to have blood tests done every week or two.
Jul. 21, 2009 1:44 pm
Gderr, I have missed alot about Claires Progress while I was away, I think its fantastic how good shes doing, a couple times while I was cleaning out my old house from the flood and moving being overwhelmed by everything I would sit and take a moment and thank god for what all He did for us and I would always add in a prayer for Claire, hearing all this great news about your beloved wife is some of the best news I have had in two weeks. WooHoo! Tell her to keep up the good work. Hugs to you both
Jul. 21, 2009 3:14 pm

Hi Gary! I just became a blogger when I learned of this great site from the carepages site. I am overwhelmed with tears of sadness and joy all rolled up together when I read all the past blogs! My son is a student of Claires and we have loved getting to know claire at Richards! She is an amazing teacher, dedicated to her students success and willing to do whatever it takes to help each one of them. Please tell her that Chris Scrivner says Hi and that his whole family and church is praying for her! Thank you for sharing this miracle with us!
Jul. 22, 2009 9:01 pm
So very glad to hear the encouraging news! It is so wonderful that she is progressing. We will continue to pray for all of you from SC. GOD BLESS!

About Me
i enjoy cooking. the wife considers it a chore. i hate yard work. she loves it. we mesh. i love bass fishing, reading, music, baseball, college football and my family.
My favorite things to cook
i love vegetables, soups, and italian cusine.
My favorite family cooking traditions
holidays are a big deal! christmas is my time to shine. i try to add a new recipe each year, but the family demands pretty much the same menu. kinda frustrating!
My cooking triumphs
i cared for my mother in law about 3 months when she had shattered her shoulder. i didn't work, so money was tight. we survived on only wife's paycheck during that time. ma-n-law had diet restrictions. it was difficult to make cheap, nutritious meals everyone would eat. we prospered as a family and learned alot about each other's strenghths and weaknesses.
My cooking tragedies
a stove top fire. i explained that one already. the grill falling over was another one...oops grill season is here! i love the tragedies...those are the ones that i'll always remember!
