the folks at the shepherd center have been unbelieveable, from the guards at the gates to the hospital adminstrators. amazing tolerance and sensitivety. i've never seen so many wheel-chair folks in my life with such great attitude , motivation and fortitude. i'm blessed. i feel guilty walking into this place to see claire. i've learned @ 750 folks are admitted here each year from the u.s.. the folks stay between 3-5 weeks . claire's timetable is 6 weeks. i don't expect her to stay that long. she is moving her left leg ! she is gripping fingers with her left hand weakly but it is a grip. that's how the right hand started. a matter of time now! she is so strong! she was depressed wednesday night. i hate her being depressed...but (in my opinion another good sign---she understands the situation .) she was in good spirts tonight. i can talk to her and she understands so much more. i miss her so much, i'll call late, very late and the nurse will let me talk to her. she communicates back to me by smacking her lips like a kiss. she is so much better! the folks at the shephard center had faxed me a questionaire concerning the widith of the doors and bathroom accomadations and such. i haven't filled it out. i feel theres no reason to...she's going to walk! she has an infection in her lungs (normal they tell me..because of her trach), she still has 1 catheter and the feeding tube. she is now on cumiden (sp) instead of the other blood-thinner. she needs to pass a swalling test and all the tubes can be removed (besideds that cat...) she has come sooo far, so strong! her case worker says she's so cute and sweet. yup a serious gazphaco is riding along with me next time. thanks for the prayers and well wishes! my tater is cooking! i hope this finds you and yours in a positive light. may your dreams come true, mine is emerging. i love you. thanks from the bottom of your heart ( moose used to say it that way.)

So glad to hear about the continued progress and terrific care! It's fair for Claire to get depressed now and then(you, too) - even with all the positive news, this is still a very hard thing for all of you. Keep the strength; my thoughts are with you. And thanks from the bottom of your heart (ha!) for keeping us posted. ♥

I am so glad to hear she is getting amazing care. I wish you and her all the best. What a beautiful love you two share <3

I'm so glad to hear this great news. There will be times Claire will get depressed, it is perfectly normal. She is working harder (physically)than she has ever worked in her life. Those OTs and PTs are like drill seargents, but they do get the results. Six weeks will pass in no time....Go ahead and measure the doors and so forth...the OT will use the dimensions while teaching her how to manage daily activity. They'll try to recreate as close as possible her home environment. You all are still in our prayers. God Bless you all, Chris

So much great news! I'm so happy for you all. Claire's responses & strength, the excellent hospital environment, the great drs., nurses, & therapists, your love & sense of humor ~ all of this will help her fulfill her potential! In a way, her prior choices in life are & will be her blessings: she ate healthfully, which has helped her physical body recuperate unencumbered by what junky, unhealthy foods do to the body; she has been a teacher & understands the struggles & frustrations & hard work required to learn, to excel; she has birthed children, & so understands the labor involved in birthing ~ the work she is & will be doing is a rebirthing of herself at all levels, & her own children are the ultimate motivators for her to come back to life. And then there is your vast love for each other...LOVE is what life is all about. Your strong love for her & your sense of humor have helped you maintain your sanity during the chaos, while helping her to grasp onto that intangible thread of life in a tangible manner. Blessed be!

Gosh, that great to hear! Your strong attitude will keep her going! I can't imagine what she feels like, it must be very frustating so I can totally understand some depression. That will be great when she can swallow better and you can bring her some goodies from home!Kiss her and the girls for us here and stay strong, my friend! Claire is an amazing woman and she will need all the encouragement that you can give her. Keep us updated when you can, we sure miss you!

I'm so glad that she is improving. Please fill out the questionnaire! She may not need a wheelchair, but she may need a walker. You'd hate to not be able to take her home because she can't get around! Even when she does come out, you'll both have to realize that she may have a different body, one that does not do the things she used to do. I hope that she will go back to her normal-ness, but it may take some time to get there. Wishing you all the best! Hugs and prayers!

Gary ~ What GREAT news. . . I have always heard great things about The Spinal Sheppard Center but nevr really "knew" anyone who was there. Six weeks will go fast!! And then she'll be all yours to take care of. Both of you are going to have your ups and downs BUT you can see a light at the end of the tunnel. I still think of y'all often and say a prayer.

Oh, wow, gderr! Such great tidings you bring! I'm not sure if it is a miracle or just destiny that you two are together. (Maybe there's not a difference?) Best wishes to you all.

Still thinking of y'all and sending postive thoughts your way! ((hugs)) Cara

gderr...echoing all the sentiments above. Also, get those papers filled out and back to the hospital. Six weeks is going to go by really quickly AND the hospital is preparing YOU for some changes as well. We all fully expect Claire to be walking and talking even before she leaves the hospital but now is the time to prepare and have a fewthings ready before she gets home. Don't wait and then stress yourself AND her just because a door isn't wide enough or a bar isn't in place. Better to be ready and not need these things than to need even one and not have it. Claire's doing ALL she can to get home and we're all rootin' for her.

Gary, BE SURE TO PICK UP TODAY'S PARADE MAGAZINE from the newspaper. Lee Woodruff, wife of newsman Bob Woodruff, has written an article about the good prospects of those who have suffered from brain trauma. Read it and rest assured that she is strong.

That's great news gderr!!!It's amazing what a person can do with love and great family and friends around♥

Jul. 12, 2009 12:33 pm
Gary, please do fill out the questionaire. As someone else said, Claire may indeed be using a walker for a time and will need to be able to get from room to room. Also, there may be Physical Therapy changes that need to be accommidated. These things can always be changed when she no longer needs them but best to be prepared and not be overwhelmed when she does get home. Granny Gigi (Ginny)

Sounds like Tater is in a good place! I know there is still a long road ahead for both of you. Remember we are always here for you through the good and the tough times. Depression and frustration do go along with all of this and is perfectly normal. Claire is so strong and you are so supportive, a winning combination! Take Care.

Thanks so much for updating us. Glad to hear that Clarie is improving daily. I'm sure it's very difficult to watch a loved one go through this. I also encourage you to fill out that questionaire. While she may be strong enough to manage without a wheelchair or even a walker when she gets home, having your house evaluated to make it as user-friendly as possible can't hurt and may be helpful at some point later on-for either of you. Appreciate your continuing to update us on her progress.

Thanks for the update, Gary! I've been thinking about you, Claire, and the girls a lot. I'm so glad to see that you're celebrating each small improvement, because that's what Claire's recovery is all about - taking one small step at a time. Please do one thing, though. Fill out that questionnaire. It's not about being sure Claire will be wheelchair-bound. It's about being prepared for any possible outcome. Filling out the questionnaire will help the staff at The Shepherd Center prepare Claire for the types of obstacles she will be facing when she comes home, ESPECIALLY walking. She'll need to be trained for all different terrains, etc. that she'll encounter and that questionnaire will help her doctors, nurses, and therapists to tailor her therapy sessions to suit her exact needs. Keep up that wonderful faith, dear Gary. We're all pulling for you and your family!

About Me
i enjoy cooking. the wife considers it a chore. i hate yard work. she loves it. we mesh. i love bass fishing, reading, music, baseball, college football and my family.
My favorite things to cook
i love vegetables, soups, and italian cusine.
My favorite family cooking traditions
holidays are a big deal! christmas is my time to shine. i try to add a new recipe each year, but the family demands pretty much the same menu. kinda frustrating!
My cooking triumphs
i cared for my mother in law about 3 months when she had shattered her shoulder. i didn't work, so money was tight. we survived on only wife's paycheck during that time. ma-n-law had diet restrictions. it was difficult to make cheap, nutritious meals everyone would eat. we prospered as a family and learned alot about each other's strenghths and weaknesses.
My cooking tragedies
a stove top fire. i explained that one already. the grill falling over was another one...oops grill season is here! i love the tragedies...those are the ones that i'll always remember!
