all good news, finally! today she was sent by ambulance to the shepherd center in atlanta. 120 miles away. i have checked out a couple other places for her, one at the hospital she was at. mother-in-law agree...too dark, dingy and depressing situation there. we have the franklin roosevelt center about 30 miles noth of here to consider. an easy drive for visits, planned or un planned. the problem with it is it really focuses on muscle type diseases. still better than local. the shepard center is amazing. she has a private room about twice the size of a double-garage and a bathroom that i could fit most modern kitchens in. i saw 3 doctors within 2 hours and one gave me is cell-phone number to call if i had any questions ANYTIME. i  saw about 5 phyiscal therapists with-in the first 3 hours, explaining what their mission and goals for claire was. claire is gonna get her irish butt worked off! the doctors had read her charts before she was admitted and expressed concern that what she is now capable of doing  was not reflected in her records. i told everyone about the vegetable remark, they were amazed. this place ia amazing. i hope if any loved one suffers a spinal-cord injury or brain hemmorage they have her opportunity. she is waking up! i told the folks to stash their cinnamon buns or claire with pilfer, she "laughed!" such a great day! i called there a little bit ago and chad her nurse held the phone to her ear. he said, "she "said" i love you. she's in room 426. may god bless my loving friends here. life is good! my tater is  alive and getting extraordinary care! thank you all  for your prayers...they have been answered!

Fabulous news! So happy for you and the entire family. Still along way to go but now I think WE ALL SEE that light at the end of this very dark tunnel. Keeping all of you in my thoughts.
Jul. 6, 2009 10:58 pm
Yahoo! That is the best news! When things settle down a bit, please consider writing the medical director at the hospital where Claire was and reporting the vegetable remark. A little sensitivity training goes a long way, and some of these docs need to be reminded from time to time they are dealing with people, not emotionless organisms.
Jul. 6, 2009 10:59 pm
Gary, you will be amazed the progress she will make with her new specialized team. I know it is inconvenient for you but this is where she belongs. I am so happy you found her such a wonderful facility. (((hugs to all of you from NY))) May God Bless you All. Chris

Great news Gary! She is in the best facility in the state of GA. I want you to know that I have a lot of family in metro Atlanta. If there is anything you need or just want someone to sit and read to her, I can have someone there in no time at all. Feel free to contact me. My e-mail is lisamorris@prodigy.net
Jul. 7, 2009 5:22 am
Gary ~ Like Christina, I was so happy to get up this morning to see your post. I am sooo glad you chose The Sheppard Spinal Center. Maybe she will not have to be 120 miles from home for too long and she can finish her rehabilitation closer to home, after all the great Dr.'s at Sheppard get her started on their program. I guess w/o traffic, you can make the trip, in what, 2 hrs maybe? Hopefully, they will let you sleep in her room, so you can stay several days at a time. I do remember you saying that they provide accommodations for family. But, I'm sure you probably want to spend all your time there with her, unless they have her "working". Y'all are in my thoughts & prayers.
Jul. 7, 2009 5:33 am
This news is so amazing. My whole family knows the story and wait for new details of her recovery. Amazing.
Jul. 7, 2009 5:36 am
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord! I'm sitting at my desk w/tears thinking how great the Lord is. I will continue to pray for Claire's healing and guidance for you Gary as you make the journey to see her. May it be short. Thanks for the update!

GREAT news!
Jul. 7, 2009 7:54 am
Yay! I'm so happy to hear the great news! The Sheppard Center is a fantastic place. They are up on all the new and leading edge treatments. I have a friend that is a speech therapist and she works there sometimes. She likes working there the most out of the other hospitals in Atlanta. I know it's far a way but it must be a little less stressful knowing what good care she is receiving. I am so happy for you and your family and continue to send warm, positive thoughts your way! ((hugs))Cara
Jul. 7, 2009 7:54 am
This is an excellent report. I should think the extra miles are a good investment in your (yours and Claire's) future.
Jul. 7, 2009 7:57 am
I am so excited. You have to keep her there even if it is far away. They actually care and will get her back to you faster!

WOW!!! Praying for continued improvements!! That's incredible! :) I am so happy for you! Thank you for the updates!
Jul. 7, 2009 10:32 am
Wonderful news! We are so happy for all of you there. God is still in the healing business and we are so thankful for his walk with Claire through this and he will continue to do so. I sent her a card and it was returned, I need to get the new address and send it there. By the way thanks so much for your concern and note re: the SC serial killer I am sure you saw on the news he was killed after shooting and injuring one of the police officers (who is doing well). We are grateful for that also. Again, we will continue to keep you all in our prayers and GOD BLESS!
Jul. 7, 2009 10:37 am
So HAPPY for you! God works his miracles every day! Keep the faith. What happy news for you. Keep us posted. Oh, and the place you picked sounds like a winner!
Jul. 7, 2009 10:47 am
Gary, I am so happy for you and your family. God really is Great. And if Clair is getting the best care possible where whe is, then that's where she sould be. The rehabilitation part is going to be very tough and she is going to need expert care and it sounds like that's what she has. Don't question Gods plans. He knows what's best for her. Let Him handle his part and just follow orders and it will all work out the way it should, the way he thinks is best. See, it get's a lot easier if you put this in His hands and let God run the show. So far, I think he has done a pretty great job. Stop worrying and let God handle it. Things will fall into place just like He wants. Still saying my prayers for Claire and your family. God bless and God speed for Claire and all the Derr family. Love, Annie

I am SO happy for you and for Claire! I had tears in my eyes reading your post. How incredible that must feel to hear her laugh and be awake and sayin I love you and getting ready to pilfer cinnamon buns. Pretty far from a vegetable state I would say! I knew she would pull through for us... how could she not with all the prayers and well wishes being sent for her from all over the world! I can't begin to tell you how happy I am for you and your family. Prayers and happy thoughts will continue for her ongoing progress. She'll be back in full force in no time. Big hugs for you and the family.
Jul. 7, 2009 3:51 pm

Gderr, I read your blogs today for the first time and I experianced shock, anger, sadness, and joy. Thank you for sharing with us, as we are all witnesses to this amazing journey. Here is a little insider note: interns are idiots. They are really "just off the boat" and don't know what's up. I deal with them everyday, eventually they do grow up ;) The Shepard Center sounds amazing, and the staff seem ultra supportive. I'm so happy Claire is there with experianced staff and specialists! Just a matter of time now...

About Me
i enjoy cooking. the wife considers it a chore. i hate yard work. she loves it. we mesh. i love bass fishing, reading, music, baseball, college football and my family.
My favorite things to cook
i love vegetables, soups, and italian cusine.
My favorite family cooking traditions
holidays are a big deal! christmas is my time to shine. i try to add a new recipe each year, but the family demands pretty much the same menu. kinda frustrating!
My cooking triumphs
i cared for my mother in law about 3 months when she had shattered her shoulder. i didn't work, so money was tight. we survived on only wife's paycheck during that time. ma-n-law had diet restrictions. it was difficult to make cheap, nutritious meals everyone would eat. we prospered as a family and learned alot about each other's strenghths and weaknesses.
My cooking tragedies
a stove top fire. i explained that one already. the grill falling over was another one...oops grill season is here! i love the tragedies...those are the ones that i'll always remember!
