my heart breaks for all the similar stories posted on my earlier blog....no one lives in a vacuum. i pray for each and all of you to hopefully have a positive result to the misfortunes placed before you. we are so fortunate to have the support of such a terrific, diverse group of caring indiviuals on this site. i count myself very lucky, indeed! ......my wife had  surgery to relieve the pressure , the neurosegeon removed  a portion of her scalp to remove the clotted blood and clean up the burst blood vessel as best as possible. he then stapled the scalp back in place. he said to be cautious with our optisim, but felt considering all things we could consider the surgery succesful.. we all left elated! 4 hours later, a call comes, tremendous pressure has developed on her brain  (41+). get here asap. i have 2 minutes to decide what to do... gator and moose are with me., the ma-in-law and sisters-in-law frantically trying to get back. ok...very long story short. they remove the scalp again, sew into abodmen (to keep alive and replace later) and relieve the pressure. we have that  assurance of "48 hours" will tell the story. that ended today. ok baby steps---- i love  these baby steps , (i consider this terrific news!)----one of her doctors (she has half a dozen i think) has decreased the oxygen in the ventillator, added a feeding tube, decreased the sedative, and will not allow us to sleep in her room. oh, i almost forgot....her nurse when she administered a shot for pain said "Claire this may sting.;"  i don't know why that made me feel good................yeah i do, here's why (my twisted judgement, but i need to believe!)-----ya can't sleep here because she's no longer in immediate danger. the nurse talking to her---she, the nurse, acknowledgeed that my wife was alive, and not a pin-cushion or a sack of potatos...she talked to her as she would my shot-scared wussy self..   btw  to anyone wishing to send card to her please send to  :columbus medical center, 702 center st. columbus,ga. 31902...claire derr, the cooking-challenged wife/ blushing-bride. i truly appreciate all the prayers, love, concern. she is the love of my life. thanks again.

We really needed to hear the update and to let you know none of us have forgotten either of you! The nurse is so on target when she said Claire is not a pin cushion. Just another way to let you know that Claire can still hear and feel. That's a mighty positive statement she made! Both of you are still in our prayer circle. Question. What does the "G" stand for? Love and hugs, Gma

gderr, I'm so glad that you posted the address for the hospital. If we had not heard from you soon, I was going to try the hospitals in the Columbus/Phoenix City area for a "DERR". These situations are so very difficult. However, as a Christian, I have been told many times, that God never puts more on you than you can bear. So, gderr, you must be very strong. It is so wonderful to so how so very much that you care for your wife. Waiting to hear more good news.

Continuing to pray for your family. I love looking at that picture of you and Claire. I used to think that I would never find "Mr. Right" but I did and we were married this past January. I hope some day, many years from now, we will be able to look back on a picture just like that. I pary that you and Claire will continue to be able to look back at yours as well. Baby steps are important, they will lead to bigger and bigger steps. Stay strong GDerr and know we are all here pulling for you and Claire.

(Psalm 145.18-19) Dear Sir, Please look to the Lord for your strength during this time and know that many of His children are praying for you and your wife Claire. I also pray that God will draw you close to Himself during this time of uncertainty and that you will feel His supreme love for you and your family. ~ In Jesus, Christy T.

Christy: your scripture was in my Sunday School lesson this morning. It was one of King david's prayers, at a very bad time in his life.We have a soverign God , who has a perfect plan for each one of our lives, even if some of it is hard to handle, so we must trust him for the perfect outcome...Dear GDerr..I could write a book or maybe two or three on how the Lord takes care of those who love him.. stay close to him, hang tight..he will carry you thru the toughest times...think of the "footprints" story

Jun. 14, 2009 2:35 pm
You are in our prayers and thoughts. I sincerely hope that everything goes well for you and your family.

Jun. 14, 2009 4:37 pm
Hi gderr. It IS such an encouragement to see that there are so many people with a passion for cooking who also have compassion and have lifted up Claire in prayer. I am here to encourage you to NOT give up hope. The Lord Jesus has heard the prayers of you, your family, and countless other believers on this site. The Lord will lift her up and heal her, AMEN. We must believe that the Lord is able to do ALL things. Your wife should be opening her eyes by now, seeing you, her beloved, standing in front of her. She will return to you - I am confident of that, with no brain damage or scarring. I dont see an update past Friday. Please share the good news with us. In Jesus name, AMEN!!

Please know that you are in our prayers here in Magdalena, New Mexico as well. My father had two strokes. The second (his fault for not following doctor advice) left him with mobility issues on his left. My mother was a stern task master and insisted he do as much as possible. He lived to age 87 when his heart finally gave out. I tell you this to emphasize how important it can be to follow the doctor's recommendation once Claire recovers from her present crisis. Medical technology is wonderful but God's grace and mercy can accomplish so much more. Rely on Him. We do not know His ways. All we can do is to trust Him. No matter what happens. Trust Him. "This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." - Psalm 118:24

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this extremely difficult time. I try to live one day at a time, but there are many times when it seems we must live minute to minute cause that is all we can handle. My children give me a hard time abt talking to myself but I think it comes from 35ys of working in healthcare. The very first nurse that trained me stressed the importance of never talking negatively in front of a patient and not talking as if they are not there. She also taught me to always talk to them as if they can hear and understand you because even if they are not able to respond to you, you must always assume that they can hear you. My handicapped daughter died at the age of 8 1/2 (sixteen yrs ago). The prognosis was not good from the day she was born. If I learned anything from that it was to NEVER GIVE UP HOPE! I believe that all things happen in God's time. Pray, believe, and cherish everything, even the tough days. I hope that you have much love and family support and that Claire makes a full recovery.

Jun. 15, 2009 11:40 am
I hope she continues to do well. My thoughts are with you.

I grew up in Columbus & my parents still live there. I will be praying for your wife & family. God always has a good reason for the things He brings into our lives, and I pray that He will show Himself to you and comfort & encourage you all during this time.

Jun. 15, 2009 1:11 pm
Baby steps are little miracles!! What you said about Claire's nurse gave me goosebumps. When my father had his stroke he too had surgery like Claire's, was sedated and put on a feeding tube for a number of days. Upon waking one of the first things he said to my sisters and I was "Thank you girls for staying with me and talking to me." Turns out that even while so heavily sedated, he heard us and felt us touching him. So Claire heard that nurse and she can hear you! Stay strong. I'll continue to think about and pray for you and all your girls.

Just read your previous blog and the update, and my thoughts and prayers go out to you, Claire, and the whole family. I would also have been encouraged by the way the nurse was talking to her. You brought tears to my eyes. It's amazing how the hospital staff can be. My sister told me when my mom was sick[ many, many years ago] she had to go for tests. [cancer] She was scared. And there was a nurse that held her hand through the tests. I can't even tell you how much that meant to my mom. And to us. Just a simple hand holding. So what that nurse did for your wife must have really touched you.:) I'm so sorry for all the pain your family is going through. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Gderr thank you for the update, as I know with everything going on , things are hectic. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family still, and especially praying for Claire. You are all in my thoughts and prayers..bless all of you..Love---Cyndi

holidays are a big deal! christmas is my time to shine. i try to add a new recipe each year, but the family demands pretty much the same menu. kinda frustrating!
My cooking triumphs
i cared for my mother in law about 3 months when she had shattered her shoulder. i didn't work, so money was tight. we survived on only wife's paycheck during that time. ma-n-law had diet restrictions. it was difficult to make cheap, nutritious meals everyone would eat. we prospered as a family and learned alot about each other's strenghths and weaknesses.
My cooking tragedies
a stove top fire. i explained that one already. the grill falling over was another one...oops grill season is here! i love the tragedies...those are the ones that i'll always remember!
