Slow Cooker Fall Harvest Pork Stew

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2011
I've made this twice now and it's definitely now a staple in my family. This isn't an explosion of flavor, just warm, homey, and comforting and gets better as the flavors meld on the second and third day. The apples do disintegrate, but makes for a thicker texture in the sauce. I do recommend cutting the pork into slightly smaller pieces and cutting the vegetables into 1" cubes, not 2" and the parsnip a bit under 1". You might feel the need for a pinch of salt to individual servings the first night, but shouldn't need it the second or third. My second time making this I substituted a potato for one of the apples and added some whole mustard seed and cumin for a bit of earthiness.

Mom's Zucchini Bread

Reviewed: Sep. 11, 2011
Average at best. Nice basic recipe recipe but far too sweet and very flat one dimensional taste. Might be passable for picky kids who might not otherwise eat vegetables, but the adults I served this to found it to be lacking. I definitely will not put time and energy into making this recipe again when there are far better out there.

Mushroom Barley Bake

Reviewed: Mar. 26, 2011
Nice base recipe that I've made a few times now. Good as is, but I up the amount of mushrooms now and add some garlic. I also use quick cooking barley and halve the baking time. Works well changing the spices around to suit your meal and the leftovers keep very well.

Slow Cooker Lentils and Sausage

Reviewed: Mar. 26, 2011
Nice basic recipe that's easy to put together. Will definitely make this again. I added onion and garlic based on other reviews (though probably would have added them anyway as we love onion and put it in almost everything) and used turkey kielbasa. The beef broth and kielbasa season it perfectly that it doesn't need any additional salt. My picky family member who doesn't like spice loved it and I found it quite good as well, though would maybe sprinkle a couple drops of hot sauce or some Aleppo pepper flakes in my own portion. Three hours on high in my crock didn't seem to cut it though and I had to cook it for about five.

Roast Sticky Chicken-Rotisserie Style

Reviewed: Mar. 9, 2011
It pains me to give this such a poor review. I've had this recipe bookmarked for ages and have been itching to make it. The only modification I made was to halve the recipe because I only wanted one chicken. I used a good quality free-range organic chicken (a brand I normally otherwise love). I otherwise followed this recipe exactly. I kept checking the recipe before posting this because I was certain I missed an important ingredient or step. Sadly, I did not. The skin was tough and leathery. My knife couldn't even cut through it. Even though the skin is the most unhealthy part, I like to sneak a taste anyway and it was inedible. The actual meat was tough and flavorless. I tried the leftovers again tonight and I cannot recall ever eating such a flavorless pieces of meat (I tried both white and dark). It's as if none of the seasoning penetrated the meat at all. I had such high hopes for this recipe.

Hamburger Soup II

Reviewed: Jan. 20, 2003
Nothing exceptionally different, but good, hearty meal that was satisfying. However, if you want it to be a soup, add a second can of tomato soup and water (and even then it was more stew-like). Skip the canned peas (canned peas are never a good idea in anything anyway), and maybe add some garlic. Will definitely make this again though, with those modifications in mind.
