I am quite proud of myself so far this summer. I have been canning enough to make up for the year without my canning equipment, and trying to fill our pantry back out! We as a family have done a lot of wild fruit picking, which has made up the bulk of my endeavors, and has made the kids feel… MORE

I could not believe it when I saw this recipe. I have seen black beans included in baked goods before, but usually as a replacement for the eggs and oil in an existing recipe, i.e. a cake mix. Instead, the bean replaces the flour, and its a totally gluten-free dish! Since I have a niece with… MORE

Someone please tell me what I am doing wrong. Apple jelly is supposed to be really easy, right? Well, I got a recipe from a trusted book. I followed said recipe EXACTLY, and it never set. I boiled to to 220, and kept it there for 1 minute. I used young thinnings that are supposed to be… MORE

Okay, I don't know how many of you out there maintain a food storage, but I have been slowly building (and eating through!) a healthy supply over the last few years. It started with buying in bulk, then canning, and then dehydrating, and when that didn't seem to be filling all the niches in a… MORE

I'll admit, I have been lazy. The past few months, heck the past few years, have battered and bruised me, stripping me of all my excess energy and time. Up until recently the need, will, and drive to cook has been one of the few factors that kept me motivated and kept me moving. But something MORE

I think I finally did it! After a month of vegetarianism for me, then a month of 'flexitarian' (minimal meat), I convinced the Hubby to take the dive with me for a month. He has tried some amazing meatless food with me, and has been impressed. So, I asked him to go veggie next month in order… MORE

This is definitely not a subject for the Berry, since I spent a little too much money for it to be considered 'frugal'!  I took the plunge and bought saffron, the most expensive herb in the world. I don't have a use for it just yet, but I am sure I will be able to find something to put it … MORE

The Spiced Cranberry got an overhaul this morning. Now that I am in a house of my own again and the postpartum is finally dissipating I am getting back to the grindstone and working on the site again! I must say, it's new look is quite cute! Stop by! MORE

I know I have been less than consistent with my entries despite my promises to the contrary, but I was hit with the infamous AR procrastination and redirection. My new apartment has left me in the worst cooking environment I have ever been subject to, and my enthusiasm for the art is being… MORE

So we got our first co-op baskets this week! Other than a boatload of bananas and mangoes, we scored asparagus, green onions, orange cauliflower, and kale. Other than the bananas and a few other fruit, I have never used any of these things before. Which opens up the field for experiments,… MORE

About Me
I am obsessed with my kitchen. It is never totally clean because I am always using it! I bake daily, and cook almost everything from scratch. If I used canned goods, I prefer having canned it myself. I am constantly looking up, tweaking, and experimenting with recipes. I love to have a big garden every year, and this is going to be the biggest. My husband is an avid hunter, so are privileged to have a lot of wild game around the house. Nothing like a meal that you grew and butchered yourself! I am considering culinary school, not to get employed as a chef, but just to learn new techniques.
My favorite things to cook
Potatoes, strangely. Like any good Irish girl, I am obsessed with them! Rarely does a dish go wrong that involves potatoes, and you can do anything with them. And BREAD! My true, undying passion is bread. It is a beautiful thing, alive and hearty and healthy and real. Nothing makes me happier than the smell, taste, feel of freshly baked bread. Heaven...
My favorite family cooking traditions
Cooking IS a tradition nowadays. Growing up my family did not cook a lot, but I am changing that for my kids. Dinner at the table every night and breakfast from scratch about 4-5 days out of the week. My kids are already food snobs, and probably would starve after a week without home cooking, lol!
My cooking triumphs
I was making holiday dinner for the whole neighborhood. My turkey had spent 3 days in the fridge, but apparently the fridge was on the fritz, and the 20-lb bird was still frozen solid morning of. I had to par-steam it to get it to thaw, then put it in the oven stuffed with fruit and onion. I got rave reviews because the steam has made it so moist, and the stuffing made it so flavorful! What was a disaster waiting to happen turned into a gorgeous meal.
My cooking tragedies
Candy is totally beyond me! I am hopeless. Thermometer or not, I have never been able to create something that and be justifiably dubbed as candy. The only thing I ever turn out is a sweet gooey mess. If there is a trick to it, I would love for someone to share it with me!
