Hoisin Braised Short Ribs

I'm supposed to be working on our Christmas letter, but as you can see I've gotten sidetracked.

Yesterday I was doing some Christmas shopping at the 5th Ave. mall and had lunch at Nordstroms. On the menu was some Hoisin Braised Short Ribs served with an Arugula Salad and mashed yellow squash. It was wonderful. I decided to try and replicate that for our Sunday dinner. It is finishing up in the oven and at the last taste test, it comes pretty close to the what I had yesterday. The only thing I added was 2 star anise to the braising liquid.

I googled the recipe and came across a recipe from the Food Network website. This meal was served with yukon mashed potatoes and sesame Chinese pea pods. Because this reminds me so much of a Chinese dish with a black bean sauce, I felt like regular Chinese rice was in order. I also made a Japanese pickled cucumber salad which we all call namasu. I think I'll serve that over some arugula. The link to this recipe is: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/dave-lieberman/braised-hoisin-beer-short-ribs-with-creamy-mashed-yukons-and-sesame-snow-peas-recipe/index.html.<

I may add a picture after we finish our meal.

Well, I tried adding a picture. It added it somewhere, but not on this post. Here is a link to my recipe with my picture of the meal. Need to practice more on my food styling skills.

Honey, if you added a picture after you were done, the picture would be of an empty plate! LOL J/K. Your title stopped me in my tracks. OMG! YUMM, I started drooling on my key board as I was reading. Hope it was as good as you thought it should be! The last time I priced short ribs, they were too pricey for my wallet.:( I Love short ribs too! Well, I will just have to wait till they go on sale and keep your recipe in mind when they do. Thanks for the yummy blog.

Wow, sounds yummy...Must be quite a contrast for you; starting in Hawaii and ending up in Alaska. Both are beautiful places but definately on the opposite ends of the weather spectrum. Happy Hoildays.

This sounds fascinating. I just got a jar of hoisin sauce for a specific recipe, and wondering what to do with the rest of it. I agree with Patty Cakes on the price though... wondering how it would be on pork?

About Me
I grew up in Hawaii and lived for a time in Japan. After my marriage my husband was stationed in Germany where we travelled a lot and were exposed to different cuisines. My mother also tried new dishes that she read about in magazines. Dishes like lasagne and beef stroganoff were introduced to our family and we all learned to try new cuisines.
My favorite things to cook
My favorite things to cook are Chinese and Japanese dishes although I seldom make them as they are time consuming. I have become more intrested in healthier foods as I grow older. One of my favorites are roasted vegetables, unusual salad combinations and grilling meats. The internet and food tv shows enable me to broaden my horizons in the kitchen. My husband says that we never have the same dish twice. I'm always trying something new.
My favorite family cooking traditions
I like to make fried rice out of leftover rice and a few dishes such as beef broccoli or steamed fish. I also like island favorites like somen salad, Chinese gau, won tons, spam musube.
My cooking triumphs
I made a dinner from Alan Wong's cookbook:Deep-Fried Won Ton Brie with Fresh Pineapple Marmalade, Lemon Shrimp Salad (Hugh Carpenter), Pork Tenderloin Medallions with Gingered Sweet Potatoes and Pineapple Macadamia Nut Relish, Mango Ice Cream Sandwish with Macadamia Nut Cookies and Tropical Fruit Compote (Roy Yamaguchi).
My cooking tragedies
Two weeks ago Chocolate Cheesecake from Diabetes Forecast Magazine. Awful! I'd rather have the real deal and have only a teaspoon or two.
