Hawaiian Bread I

Reviewed: Apr. 9, 2014
I converted this to an oven recipe by mixing the ingredients and baking at 375 degrees for about half an hour. Came out great. Except for the texture (you can taste the crushed pineapple), this tastes just like King's Hawaiian sweet bread. I was worried that it would be overwhelmingly coconutty because while it was rising, all I could smell was the coconut extract, but I can barely taste the coconut. Also, I did not find that I needed to add any extra moisture to the dough; I was actually worried it might be too sticky!

Easy and tasty. My picky boyfriend had nothing but good things to say.

Amazing Whole Wheat Pizza Crust

Reviewed: Feb. 3, 2013
The dough was delicious, but the texture was more like bread than a pizza crust- too fluffy and soft for my taste, but I might use the recipe for dinner rolls in the future.

Kalua Pig in a Slow Cooker

Reviewed: Jan. 30, 2013
Not that this recipe needs anymore rave reviews, but I will say that it tastes exactly like the kalua pork I had in Maui. All I need is Aloha Mixed Plate's Guava BBQ sauce recipe and I'm good to go! The only thing I'd say is that I'd probably shave off an hour's worth of cooking time when I make this again. Mine was still tender and moist, but not as much as I would like. Also, for lack of banana leaves, I rubbed the roast all over with the inside of a couple banana peels. Seemed to do the trick.

Honey Wheat Bread I

Reviewed: Feb. 26, 2010
Yum! I will be making this recipe again and again. This is the closest to store-bought bread I have ever come; it is so moist, airy and flavorful. However I will say that like B. Gilbertson, I had to add at least 1.5 C more flour since the dough as is was too sticky.

Slow Cooker Chicken and Dumplings

Reviewed: Feb. 26, 2010
I followed the recipe to a T and found it extremely bland and the texture very strange. I was excited to try the American version of dumplings (which, by the way, is totally different from the Chinese definition), but this is just too mushy and weird for me. Maybe my boyfriend will like it. I gave the recipe two stars because it was so easy and inexpensive to make. ETA: added a star because my boyfriend really liked the soup.

Easy Tuna Casserole

Reviewed: Feb. 6, 2010
I was impressed when my boyfriend went for a second helping of this casserole (first time ever, in my brief history of cooking), but when he went for a third? Just blown away. It's a breeze to make, and the ingredients are readily available at your local supermarket for Americans, at least. Since I first made this a few months ago, my boyfriend has been requesting it at least once a week. Oh, as a final note, I usually double the quantities in the recipe.

Beef Tips and Noodles

Reviewed: Feb. 6, 2010
I thought it was too bland, but my younger cousins rated it an A+, and it was easy to make. This isn't a dish I would cook for myself, but it'll probably stay in my arsenal for the younger kids in the family.

Debdoozie's Blue Ribbon Chili

Reviewed: Feb. 6, 2010
Blue Ribbon indeed! I used hot salsa to up the kick factor since my boyfriend and I love spicy food. This recipe creates delicious chili that's also really easy to make when you're short on time and money. It did come out a little more watery than I like my chili to be, so I think next time, I'll be more careful to fully drain the beans, and maybe even add a roux.

Homesteader Cornbread

Reviewed: Feb. 6, 2010
I used buttermilk instead of regular milk since I had a carton I needed to use up, but this recipe made the best cornbread I've ever tasted. Best of all, it's ridiculously simple and low maintenance. The boyfriend cooed over it, so it will definitely be part of my regular rotation.

My Favorite Sesame Noodles

Reviewed: Jan. 21, 2010
Delicious alternative to spaghetti with marinara sauce. I would recommend using Asian noodles (soba, lo mein, rice noodles, etc.) for a more authentic texture, but this had just the right kick to it. I used chili oil ('la yu') instead of the Thai chili paste. Next time, I'll be adding more sesame oil.

Creamy Potato Leek Soup II

Reviewed: Jan. 2, 2010
I've been craving potato leek soup for months, and this hit the spot. I halved the portions since it's just me and my boyfriend, and didn't find it to be bland or boring at all. I only added a teaspoon or so of black pepper for seasoning, and that was more than enough. Yum!

Easy Indian Butter Chicken

Reviewed: Jul. 20, 2009
Super easy. The best and most authentic tasting chicken makahni recipe I've tried on this site to date, although initially I was wary of the light pink color of the dish as opposed to the deep tomato red of most others. Seriously, if chicken makahni is your dish, try this recipe! Oh, because I only had garam masala on hand, I added more of that than called for in the recipe.

Makhani Chicken (Indian Butter Chicken)

Reviewed: Sep. 1, 2008
3.5 stars- it was exceedingly yummy, but a star and a half off for how involved it was and how it tasted nothing like the chicken makhani I'm used to. Tomorrow I'm going to try adding more tomato paste to see if it makes a difference. UPDATE: Added another half can of tomato paste. Still nothing at all like chicken makhani. Revised to 2.5 stars.
