In a recent issue of my health provider's quarterly magazine I found this health quiz which I thought would be interesting to share with you.  I will post the answers in a day or two.

1.  Which dried fruit is highest in added sugars?
a.  dried cranberries  b.  raisins  c.  prunes  d.  dried apricots

2.  How much sugar is in two tablespoons of ketchup?
a.  1/2 teaspoon  b.  1 teaspoon  c.  1 1/2 teaspoons  d.  2 teaspoons

3.  Which condiment tends to have the the most added sugar?
a.  fat-free salad dressing  b.  regular salad dressing  c.  mustard  d.  mayonnaise

4.  Which item typically has the most sodium per serving?
a.  canned tuna  b.  canned soup  c.  canned tomato juice  d.  canned fruit

5.  A study by the CDC found this to be the biggest source of sodium in our (USA) diet: 
a.  frozen meals  b.  salty snacks  c.  soups  d.  bread

6.  Which dairy product is the highest in sodium?
a.  cottage cheese  b.  skim milk  c.  cheddar cheese  d.  yogurt

  [NOTE:  Sugar and sodium amounts are based on averages for that food across brands]

 And here are the answers:  1.  a  2.  d  3.  a  4.  b  5.  d    6.  a

And according to the American Heart Association guidelines for daily intake:
Sodium:  1,500 mg per day for people over 50. (1,500 mg is equivalent to about 3/4 teaspoon of table salt.)
Sugar:  No more than 6-7 % of daily calories (which is about 6 teaspoons of sugar per day for women and 7 teaspoons for men).  NOTE:  this does not include sugars found naturally in dairy and fruit.  Food labels list sugar in grams.  One teaspoon of sugar is 4 grams.

I eat way too much salt and we won't even talk about sugar....

Wow! I do read labels religiously and spent years trying to keep both my Dad and DH on track with sodium. I have also been trying to control my weight since the birth of my youngest (now in her 2nd year of residency at Mass General, LOL) so I guess it paid off. I shall enjoy all my fabulous prizes!

I got the last one wrong. We shop by sodium and sugar content not price around here. DH has HBP and Mom diabetes. You would think I would be thinner LOL.

The one I knew for sure was #3 - anytime you reduce fat, the sugar content goes up. Gotta' make up for the lack of flavor somehow! Diabetics need to watch for that.

My favorite things to cook
I love to make soups. Chili, beef vegetable, ham and bean,and tortilla soups are our favs. I like casseroles - one dish dinners are the best! I think the slow cooker is about the best cooking aid in my kitchen. I love to try new recipes, that's what makes this a super website; that and all the cool contributors.
My favorite family cooking traditions
Anything I did with my grandmother! Thanksgiving at Grandma's house was the best. She wanted to do it all - and she was a great cook. Making taffy with her was such a treat! I remember the first time she made pizza (from a box). She wasn't too sure about pizza! But in the mid 1950's, none of us midwesterners were too sure about pizza!
My cooking triumphs
When I was 13, I entered seven different baked goods (mostly cakes) in open class at the fair, competing against adult cooks with great records. I took first place with all but one entry, which got a second place ribbon.
My cooking tragedies
Looking back over the years, my biggest tragedy was making gravy...but thanks to CindyLepp, it is no longer a challenge! She sent me packets of dry gravy mixes!
