Moroccan Shabbat Fish

Reviewed: Jun. 29, 2010
Subbed 2 cans tomatoes for the chopped and it worked quite well. Not a heavily flavored dish for the title "Moroccan" but it was tasty. I'll make it again but probably double the spices.

Chewy Coconut Cookies

Reviewed: Apr. 19, 2010
I tried to make it non-dairy but subbing applesauce for butter. It works for most cookies but not these. Baked for 35 minutes in a 8x8 pan it made a nice, moist cake.

Golden Sweet Cornbread

Reviewed: Apr. 19, 2010
Great. Soaking the cornmeal in the flour for ten minutes made it less gritty than most. Next time I'll cut back on the sugar a bit - this recipe has an almost carmelized top. I'll also up the oil a bit to combat crumbliness. Full lined muffin cups baked for 18 minutes was perfect.

Neat Sloppy Joes

Reviewed: Apr. 19, 2010
No depth of flavor. I could have jazzed it up per comments but I'm reviewing the recipe as originally written.

Farm Macaroons

Reviewed: Jan. 8, 2010
Use medium egg whites or you may find yourself with a meringue with coconut instead of a coconut macaroon.

Cinnamon Sugar Biscotti

Meh. Not bad but not remarkable. Won't make again.

Triple Layer Cookie Bars by EAGLE BRAND®

Reviewed: Dec. 23, 2009
We make the easier version of this every Christmas. Skip the melting and the peanut butter and just sprinkle on the chocolate chips onto the coconut before baking.

Wasabi Pea Gnocchi

Reviewed: Nov. 3, 2009
Blend the peas separately to avoid overworking the mix. These floated faster than my normal gnocchis and some were undercooked in the middle. If I made it again I'd at least double the spices but I'll be sticking with my classic gnocchi recipe for now.

Coronation Chicken

Reviewed: Oct. 27, 2009
Good but be careful with your mayo. Olive oil mayo makes for a slimy feeling in the mouth in this dish.

A viable substitute for beef while eating but you'll be hungry soon after.

Caramelized Brussels Sprouts with Pistachios

Reviewed: Oct. 26, 2009
If you slice them for more flavor and use balsamic vinegar as suggested you get weird purply-brown veggies. Not appealing. Didn't like the recipe enough to go back and make it as originally listed so I can't give a rating but I can't post without one.

Quick Gnocchi

Reviewed: Aug. 17, 2009
Sauce is needed for this to be successful but it's a great non-dairy pasta alternative. I tossed a chunk of goat cheese in with the still hot gnocchi, tossed to coat, plated and drizzled with pesto. If my gnocchi weren't all such random sizes and shapes it would have been quite elegant.

German Chicken

Reviewed: Aug. 17, 2009
Sounds weird but it's a new family favorite. I'd suggest sticking with standard kraut (not Bavarian) or it could easily get too sweet. If using frozen chicken breast use the cooking directions on the package but layer as per the directions here. Excess barbecue sauce gives a mellow smoky sweet taste to the kraut. Drain the kraut first so you get a nice blend of flavors instead of a puddle.

Mom's Rum Cake

Reviewed: Aug. 9, 2009
It's good enough for cake from a box but I don't understand all the reviews calling it awesome. The rum in the mix isn't strong enough to really flavor the cake leaving all the rum taste concentrated in the glaze.

Amaretti

Reviewed: Oct. 20, 2008
i used 2 c Hodgson's Mill Almond Meal / Flour for the slivers and the cookies worked fine. The dough was a bit much for my hand mixer. Form balls because it does flatten some as it bakes even if chilled.

Beef Samosas

Reviewed: Oct. 20, 2008
Good, but a LOT of work. To make it a little easier I've also done this with instant potatoes, curry powder instead of all the individual spices, and baked inside biscuts from the tube instead of fried in phyllo.

Banana Banana Bread

Very banana-y. Yum. Make sure you cook it at least an hour. Mine had an undercooked middle. I consider that user error rather than a recipe flaw.
