Magical Dressing

Reviewed: Jan. 7, 2012
Good base recipe for dressing, five star worthy once some garlic and oregano are added. Whole family enjoyed this one not only as a dressing but also used as a dip for slices of sourdough bread. thanks for sharing!

Banana Nut Oatmeal

Reviewed: Jan. 5, 2012
This oatmeal has good flavor, but I think adding cinnamon and nutmeg would make it five stars. I used honey but since other reviewers said it was a bit too sweet with 3 tbsp, I added it a tbsp at a time until it was just sweet enough for me (ended up being just under 2 tbsp). I like the idea of using maple syrup, I'll be trying that next time. This is a nice, filling breakfast on those cold mornings. Thanks for sharing!

Rated G Mexican Coffee

Reviewed: Jan. 5, 2012
Really good on a cold Michigan morning. I just made this in my coffeemaker by putting all the spices and coffee together and brewing the coffee. The chocolate syrup was a nice touch. Making this in the coffeemaker made the process easier and the end result was super-tasty. Thanks for sharing!

Garden Penne

Excellent way to get some veggies in my little brother's diet. I used whole wheat pasta and added more garlic and zucchini (didn't have yellow squash). Thanks for sharing your recipe!

Wonderful punch, this was a big hit at my brother's graduation party (blue was the school color). I'd definitely recommend it. Thanks for sharing!

Raspberry and Almond Shortbread Thumbprints

Reviewed: Dec. 18, 2011
I absolutely love these cookies, and so did everyone in my family! I did take the suggestion of another reviewer to chill the dough after making the indentation (I used the chapstick cap idea) and filling it with jam. I think this helped my cookies from spreading too much. These cookies took about 15 minutes in my oven, and are a beautiful addition to my cookie table this Christmas. Thanks for sharing!

Russian Tea Cakes I

Reviewed: Dec. 17, 2011
These are such pretty cookies with a fantastic flavor. I followed the recipe exactly, the only thing i'd recommend is making sure to chop/grind the walnuts very fine; i got it to crumb-like consistency and that worked well for me. I didn't feel that it needed a second coating of the confectioner's sugar but I do recommend coating them while they are still warm (not hot) enough that you can hold them. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Orange White Chocolate Chip Beltane Cookies

Reviewed: Dec. 16, 2011
This is a really great cookie, the orange flavor paired with the white chocolate is a nice change from the ordinary chocolate chip or white chocolate/macadamia nut cookie. I'd recommend adding an additional tbsp of fresh orange zest, and cutting back on the sugar to 1 cup. These took 14 minutes at 350 in my oven, and my family couldn't stop eating them. Thanks for sharing this recipe :)

So easy, so delicious! I'm never going back to the canned stuff again. I made the recipe as written, next time I'll take the suggestion of adding some cinnamon. Thanks for sharing this one!

Sunshine S'more Cupcakes

Reviewed: Nov. 25, 2011
These are delicious cupcakes, and such a fun treat for kids! I chose to follow the package directions for the cake mix rather than using what is called for here. Also, I didn't feel like 2 tablespoons of graham cracker crumbs was enough in the batter to give it that graham flavor so I doubled the amount to 4 tbsp. I had a lot of chocolate chips i wanted to use up so I put those in the cupcakes rather than chocolate kisses and I think it worked out just fine. Broiling the marshmallow topping is a great idea IMO because that gives it the s'more flavor. I'm giving 4 stars for the idea and basic directions...5 stars if you go ahead and double the amount of graham cracker crumbs and use the cake mix directions. Thanks for sharing this recipe :)

Creamy Veggie Potato Stew

Reviewed: Oct. 16, 2011
It's a pretty basic potato soup, all the essentials are there but there just isn't enough flavor for my tastes. I'd add plenty of garlic to this when cooking the onions, and i'd double the amount of black pepper. It's good if you're just learning to make soup (especially cream based ones), but there are better potato soups out there with lots more flavor.

Apple-Feta Tossed Salad

Reviewed: Oct. 16, 2011
It's a great salad once you add some olive oil to the dressing. Without the olive oil, the dressing is, of course, terrible. I only made enough salad for myself so I used 1 tbsp. of olive oil and 1 tsp. of the vinegar. This is a great fall salad when all different varieties of apples are plentiful. Thanks for sharing!

Lentils and Rice with Fried Onions (Mujadarrah)

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2011
I tried this dish in a restaurant once and loved it, so I wanted to try making it on my own. Getting those onions nice and caramelized for this dish is so, so important. Also, I did read that this dish traditionally has cumin and cinnamon in it (as other reviewers have noted) so I added 1 tbsp. of cumin and 1 tsp. of cinnamon. I think that really helped this dish because it would have been too bland for me otherwise. I definitely recommend eating this with yogurt, that tang makes it oh so, so good. *Note*: if you want to eat this with brown rice, I'd recommend make your brown rice separate from the lentils and then mix it all up in your plate. I'm so happy I finally found a recipe for Mujadarrah. Thanks for sharing!

Brazilian Black Bean Stew

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2011
This was a very tasty and filling stew, but as written it is a bit bland. I am a vegetarian so I left out the meat. I had some veggie broth I needed to use up so I used that instead of water. Adding 3/4 tsp. of cumin to this dish really turns it into a 5 star recipe. I love how easy this is to put together and the fact that I can serve this on its own with a small side salad for a healthy lunch. Thanks for sharing!

Cinnamon Griddle Cakes

Reviewed: Oct. 9, 2011
This recipe makes for fluffy, sweet pancakes that really do taste like cinnamon rolls. I did leave out the corn syrup (I never keep it in the house) and I used splenda rather than white sugar. I also cut the amount of butter down to 1/8th cup. The pancakes themselves came out beautifully. I was about to make the topping when I realized I had no confectioners' sugar (oops!) so I just used maple syrup instead...it was still a fantastic breakfast. Now I just have to remember to keep the confectioners' sugar around, because i can tell these will be requested often in my home. Thanks for sharing!

Lazy Dazy Cake I

Reviewed: Oct. 8, 2011
Overall a very good cake, and easy to put together. I noticed a reviewer mentioned eggy-ness so I cut back to three eggs (can't stand eggy-ness) and after tasting the batter I added 1/2 tsp. of vanilla extract for more flavor. I agree with others that the baking time is wayyy off; mine was done in 20 minutes. The cake itself is nice and spongy; nothing too dense. but that topping....Oh WOW that topping is amazing for this cake. I would absolutely make this again, but with the changes I mentioned above. Thanks for sharing!

Black Bean Hummus

Reviewed: Oct. 8, 2011
excellent recipe! I eat a lot of hummus and normally I make the traditional garbanzo bean kind. I wanted to try this one out because my little brother is allergic to garbanzo beans and I wanted him to be able to enjoy the wraps I was making for lunch. The only change I made to the recipe was to leave out the liquid from the canned beans (never liked it) and use about 1/2 tbsp. of olive oil instead. I love the flavor of this hummus and my brother has been dipping pita bread into it all day :) Thanks for sharing this recipe!

Gujarati Carrot and Peanut Salad

Reviewed: Oct. 7, 2011
Love this salad! Reminds me of a salad my aunt used to make for big family dinners. I did leave out the sugar, but other than that I followed the recipe. This one brought back some great memories of home. Thanks for sharing!

Parmesan Garlic Bread

Reviewed: Oct. 6, 2011
A nice, quick bread for those evenings when you're in a rush to get dinner on the table. I would omit the garlic salt and use all garlic powder, and I wouldn't bother melting the butter either, as other reviewers have mentioned. I do love the addition of herbs to this garlic bread; I thought the thyme was especially good in this recipe. Thanks for sharing!
