My favorite things to cook
Things made in a slow cooker and things made overnight in a slow cooker. My personal favorite slow cooker recipes include: Overnight Oatmeal (steel cut oats), Slow Cooker Mac & Cheese, Slow Cooker Cobblers
My favorite family cooking traditions
The first would have to be breakfast! My grandmother was famous for her whole wheat gravy and biscuits breakfast with fried cheddar cheese (in an old black skillet). My mom inherited her talent, and the tradition lives on! The second favorite would have to be pressure cooking. The sound of a pressure cooker brings back special memories - happy thoughts of time at my grandmother's. I now have her pressure cooker, and have recently begun to use it. My goal is to duplicate her roast, which she seared, floured, and cooked as only she could. I've yet to taste a roast anywhere that even comes close to her's!
My cooking triumphs
Strawberry delight, butter pound cake, and fried green beans, grilled bok choy, and my famous chicken & dumplings (made with flour tortillas) are what my friends and family would probably say are my specialties. I have gotten pretty good at baking, but I sometimes wonder if I could do it without a convection oven. One secret to baking is knowing your oven INTIMATELY.
My cooking tragedies
I don't understand "folding". For example, when the recipe says to "fold the apples into the batter"- I can't do it. Call it a mental block....I just can't do it! I have, however, finally mastered the task of folding fitted sheets, which plagued me for years before I finally learned! I guess that is for a different forum! My only real "tragedy" would probably be the time I thought it would be okay to substitute 3 cups of Bisquick in place of 3 cups all purpose flour.
