New to the world of marriage and mothering, I'm a stay at home mom and a singer/bass player in a local alt-country band on the weekends. Before I was married I ate out a lot and developed a taste for great food and good wine, so now I try to recreate that at home, much cheaper.
My favorite things to cook
I enjoy stuffing and roasting birds because they remind me of a little naked baby! I have a lot of fun making it kick its legs and "sit up" while I stuff its cavity. Perhaps that kind of humor doesn't work for everyone but it makes me laugh.
My husband and I recently created our favorite breakfast, which is Blueberries and cream french toast with free-range pork sausage and Orangina. Yummy!
My favorite family cooking traditions
My step-dad makes THE BEST barbeque brisket. Just ask anyone in west Texas. My mother's thanksgiving stuffing is the best, and I can't seem to quite recreate it. When I was a kid my mom made homemade bread all the time, she had this big blue bowl that the dough would rise as it sat covered with a towel in the sun. My brother and I would always sneak in a nip little pieces off to eat. Of course now raw dough seems gross but we were just kids. I will always remember the smell of the dough and the towel and that big blue bowl.
My cooking triumphs
I often surprise myself by pulling together really great-tasting meals, usually with fish because I'm not very good at cooking beef or chicken.
My cooking tragedies
Anything with dough. My husband knows that I don't do dough, so when he wanted to make some homemade gnocci, I said Good Luck. An hour later the kitchen is covered in potato paste, his face, hands and body are coated, and he is cursing all gnocci. We ate mushy potato flour balls for dinner that night. Yuck.
