About this Cook
I'm currently temporarily unemployed, so I have a lot of time to cook and not a lot of money to do it with.
My favorite things to cook
I love baking, but I try to eat healthy most of the time. My favorite recipes are vegetarian, mostly because meat is expensive. Barring that, I absolutely adore good Cajun food, old German recipes, and anything cross-cultural. I like to try new things and experiment.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother openly declared the kitchen terra incognita to her, so my brothers and I learned to cook out of self-defense. Pretty soon it became a way for me to relax--for that reason, I actually prefer recipes that take time and effort to prepare. My family is mostly German, so we grew up on sausage soup, riebel soup, and beef stew. My sister-in-law spent two years in Russia and came back with several recipes, including a delicious one for borscht.
My cooking triumphs
Best marinara sauce ever; polenta to die for; homemade vegan bread; my favorite comfort food, pancakes; pumpkin chocolate chips that never make it through a day in the house.
My cooking tragedies
One mixing up of flour with powdered sugar in a bread recipe and one memorable trip to the hardware store--in the middle of boiling eggs.

Quinoa Black Bean Burgers
These were the perfect texture for forming patties and came out awesome (I followed the recipe exactly). My only complaint is that they were a tad bit bland - I think next time I'll add in a little bit more hot sauce and spices.

Mid-Summer Italian Bread Salad
What a unique flavor! The second time I made it, I cut the olive oil to a teaspoon and added some more balsamic vinegar, plus cut the bread in half to save on calories. It was still wonderful--even my dad loved it!
