I'm currently temporarily unemployed, so I have a lot of time to cook and not a lot of money to do it with.
My favorite things to cook
I love baking, but I try to eat healthy most of the time. My favorite recipes are vegetarian, mostly because meat is expensive.
Barring that, I absolutely adore good Cajun food, old German recipes, and anything cross-cultural. I like to try new things and experiment.
My favorite family cooking traditions
My mother openly declared the kitchen terra incognita to her, so my brothers and I learned to cook out of self-defense. Pretty soon it became a way for me to relax--for that reason, I actually prefer recipes that take time and effort to prepare.
My family is mostly German, so we grew up on sausage soup, riebel soup, and beef stew. My sister-in-law spent two years in Russia and came back with several recipes, including a delicious one for borscht.
My cooking triumphs
Best marinara sauce ever; polenta to die for; homemade vegan bread; my favorite comfort food, pancakes; pumpkin chocolate chips that never make it through a day in the house.
My cooking tragedies
One mixing up of flour with powdered sugar in a bread recipe and one memorable trip to the hardware store--in the middle of boiling eggs.
