As other reviewers have mentioned this recipe does NOT make your house smell good while brewing. That being said, the soup is delicious. I made a few changes. I added about 1/2 more of fresh chopped onion, onion powder, garlic powder, approx. 1/4 - 1/2 cup of water, approx. 1/2 cup of sugar, salt & pepper (like others suggested), and Italian seasoning. I not only drained, but also rinsed my beans before adding them to the crock-pot, I used frozen corn, because that's what I already had and a Corona beer that had been in my frig for literally months (seriously). This soup is very spicy, but its fabulous! I especially like it when served with the sour cream, cheddar cheese, and tortilla toppings, as suggested by the recipe. I'm really happy I made this! Thanks! :)
My advice for those who are thinking of making this... I think you ABSOLUTELY must tweak this recipe per your specifications. If you know you don't like the bitterness of canned tomato sauce, you have to add sugar, if you are a big onion fan (like me) add more onion, if you like herbs, add herbs, if you don't like beer use white wine, but whatever you do, PLEASE DO NOT USE A CHEAP beer. This is an excellent base and for many its fantastic just the way it is, but if you are a picky Lady like I am, you must tweak it to cater to YOUR taste buds. You are doing yourself an injustice not to spice it up to your liking. That's one of the things I really like about this website. Its encouraged! :)
