About this Cook
I'm retired and living in a completely new locale--Cape Cod--after moving from Central Coast California a few years ago.
My favorite things to cook
Fresh foods, homegrown fruits and vegetables, fish, chicken, and the occasional fattening dessert!
My favorite family cooking traditions
Thanksgiving and holiday menus that feature family recipes.
My cooking triumphs
Preparing an entire German Christmas menu for the first time one Christmas in California, including stuffed goose, red cabbage, and lots of German cookies for dessert.
My cooking tragedies
I've made most of the cooking mistakes you CAN make. My most recent disaster was when I accidentally used baking soda instead of the cornstarch my stir-fry recipe required (both came in orange boxes.) Only discovered my mistake when I saw the faces my dinner-guests were making when they tasted the food.

Zippy Cranberry Cheddar Spread
Just made this recipe for a fundraiser at my library featuring Cape Cod foods (cranberries in this case.) Major plusses: it only took a few minutes to make since I used packaged shredded cheese AND it can be made a few days ahead. BUT it does need more flavor. On the recommendation of previous reviewers, I doubled the spices, and increased the dried cranberries to 1/2 cup. I added Worcerstershire Sauce to taste (beginning at 1 teaspoon) and also used the sharpest grated cheddar I could find. Finally, just before serving with crackers, I sprinkled 1/2 cup of toasted slivered almonds (obtained already toasted from Trader Joe's) over the top of the cheese. So easy and very flavorful with the increased flavorings. I'll make it again for guests and potlucks.
